Beauty There Is Cory Anderson’s stunning YA novel about brutality and beauty and about broken people trying to survive—perfect for Patrick Ness, Laura Ruby, and Meg Rosoff’s fans.

To understand the truth, you have to start at the beginning.

Winter in Idaho. The sky is dark. It is cold enough to crack bones.

Living in harsh poverty, Jack Dahl is holding his breath. He and his younger brother have nothing—except each other. And now Jack faces a stark choice: lose his brother to foster care or find the drug money that sent his father to prison.

He chooses the money.

Ava Bardem lives in isolation, a life of silence. But, for seventeen years, her father, a merciless man, has controlled her fate. He has taught her to love no one. Now Victor Bardem is stalking the same money as Jack. However, when he picks up on Jack’s trail, Ava must make her own wrenching choice: remain silent or speak and help the brothers survive.

Choices. They come at a price.

I loved “What Beauty There Is” so much. Right from the get-go, the author sets the pace as Jack sees his mother hanging and doesn’t know what to do. What follows is a fantastic tale that takes us on an adventure filled with action, mystery, and suspense, as Jack, Matty, and Ava try to avoid death. I cannot believe this is the debut novel of the author because the story was just superb!

Firstly. the characters are unforgettable, and I loved Jack, Ava, and Matty. My heart just went out for Jack and Matty. They face tough luck from all angles, one side from child services, another side is from people chasing after money that his father Leland has kept. On top of all that, he meets Ava, who has her baggage with Bardem, and tries to help him. Moreover, Bardem is probably one of the most sinister villains I have read lately, and he gave me chills. On a side note, I also enjoyed Bev and wished we had more of her in the storyline. Matty is just adorable! For some reason, Doyle had me chuckling because it felt like he was always one step behind from finding Jack and Matty.

Furthermore, I thought the author wrote Jack and Ava so well. Initially, I felt a romance between them might throw the story off, but the author writes their scenes so beautifully that you cannot help but fall in love with them. One of my favorite scenes in the story is when she tends to his wounds. Another memorable spine-chilling scene is when Bardem enters the room, and Matty doesn’t know what to do! The book had me glued!

Overall, I just loved everything about “What Beauty There Is” and cannot wait for the author’s future releases!
