To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island. Then  finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

The first thing I loved about “Fable” was the adventure element. I don’t think I have ever read (or don’t recall recently) an adventure YA fantasy novel set on a ship with magical elements. The story had everything from fierce characters to buried treasure. The author adds quite a few shocking twists and turns that I did not expect. Some of my favorite scenes are when she meets the crew of the Marigold or when she meets Saints and learns shocking secrets about West.

The author also did a fantastic job with the characters. I loved Fable and the journey she goes through to find her inheritance. She is strong, loyal, determined, and fierce and fits perfectly with the tale. I felt like I was by her side as she goes on her quest to Ceros to meet Saint and reclaim what is hers. The author also did a decent job of adding flashbacks to Fable’s past, where you get more information on her mother and the events that transpired. Also, all the characters were memorable. After reading the story, I missed Willa, Paj, Hamish, and Auster. West is also a fantastic character with many secrets, and you don’t know his intentions.

But, I was not particularly interested in the romance of West and Fable. While I found them charming together, I didn’t feel that it added much value to the story, and the plot would have been the same even if it didn’t happen. However, I enjoyed the way the author told their romance in an angsty manner.

Nevertheless, “Fable” is very entertaining and I enjoyed it very much. The story ends in a shocking cliffhanger, and I can’t wait to read the continuation in “Namesake.”
