What if a school club changed your life forever?

In the second week of seventh grade, Jason Sloan signs up for the brand-new HAIR Club. He and his friends have no idea what it’s about, but since they’re the first to sign up they figure they’ll be in charge in no time. The club turns out to be super weird: using fancy new equipment donated by a mysterious benefactor, the members are supposed to monitor school security footage. Their first assignment: find out what is stealing the cafeteria’s croutons.

Instead of the expected dark cafeteria, the computers show the club members something else entirely: actual footage of themselves as high school seniors, five years in the future! What on earth could be happening? Is it some kind of time warp, or alternate reality? Or is it just an un-funny prank? As they scramble to solve the mystery, they can’t help but notice something else—none of them like what they see five years from now. Is there any way to change the future—and their fates?

Welcome to Dweeb Club Review:

“Welcome to Dweeb Club” was an excellent middle-grade adventure book that made me glued to the pages.

Let me preface by saying that I jumped into the story without reading the synopsis. I love reading middle-grade literature, and the title sounded like a humorous tale, so I started reading it. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that the book has much more going on than your usual middle school club activities. There is action, drama, adventure, and even orders on science fiction and alternate realities. I loved how the author incorporated all these elements into this story with a touch of humor, where even I didn’t know how the story would progress.

The story picked up once they started seeing the Midnight Recordings and started investigating what was happening. I also enjoyed the storyline surrounding the Crouton Crook. One memorable moment in the tale is when they are all in the cafeteria and come across the culprit and wonder what to do.

All the characters in the club are also charming. I liked Jason in the lead and how he interacted with the group. What’s nice is also how the author included Jason’s Uncle Luke and Aunt Shannon in the storyline because I enjoyed both the characters. Even Alice, as annoying as she could be at times, was humorous. Even Steve, Vincent, Lara, Andrew, Nikhil, and Hoppy were fun.

The author also processes the tale nicely that leads to an exciting climax. What’s nice about the science fiction angle is how it makes us wonder what our future selves would be if we changed action in our present.

Overall, “Welcome to Dweeb Club” is a fabulous start to the series, and I look forward to revisiting the characters.
