If I had to choose the unique historical fiction novel I read this year that flawlessly blended fact with fiction, it would be “The King’s Anatomist.”

Firstly, I commend the way the author executed the book. He tells parts of the story in an epistolary manner, giving it a personal touch. Moreover, the author toggles the story between the present and the past as Jan travels with Marcus and remembers the various moments he shared with Andreas. To top it all off, we get beautiful images that compliment some of the historical events during this time.

Moreover, I love stories that make me engrossed over a subject matter, and I found myself reading about many characters like Martin Luther and Étienne Dolet after finishing it. The first half of the tale was terrific as I loved Jan’s recollections from Besancon and Verona. On a side note, I adored the references to Leonardo’s drawings as well.

Jan and Marcus shine out in the tale as they go on their adventure. Frankly, I loved Marcus and how protective he is towards Jan and stands by him thoroughly. While I liked the mystery plot in the second half of the story, the way the author blended so many events was the highlight. However, there were some memorable moments to the plot, like when Jan sees an apparition that unnerves him. Even some of the supporting characters like Tritonius and Fritz were memorable.

Overall, this book stands out from all the other historical novels I read this year because of how the author executed it. If you have a fascination for historical fiction and the human body, you will surely enjoy reading “The King’s Anatomist.”
