Titanic meets The Shining in S.A. Barnes’ Dead Silence, a SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn’t yet ended.

A GHOST SHIP.
A SALVAGE CREW.
UNSPEAKABLE HORRORS.

Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. With nothing to lose and no desire to return to Earth, Claire and her team decide to investigate.

What they find at the other end of the signal is a shock: the Aurora, a famous luxury space-liner that vanished on its maiden tour of the solar system more than twenty years ago. A salvage claim like this could set Claire and her crew up for life. But a quick trip through the Aurora reveals something isn’t right.

Whispers in the dark. Flickers of movement. Words scrawled in blood. Claire must fight to hold onto her sanity and find out what really happened on the Aurora, before she and her crew meet the same ghastly fate.

Dead Silence Review:

“Dead Silence” is like “Star Trek” meets “The Haunting of Hill House,” and I could not put it down.

Right from the get-go, the author sets the page as we see Claire trying to defend herself to Reed and MAx at the Verux Peace and Rehabilitation center. The story is terrifying and creepy, and I enjoyed how the author wrote the horror and suspense. There are some shocking scenes and gory deaths that you don’t expect. Yet, you also have moments where just the silence or the smell will give you goosebumps. The story takes a full swing as soon as the crew sets foot in the Aurora. On a side note, I also enjoyed the futuristic world-building and about the first colonist on Mars and how the author set the landscape for terror.

Moreover, the author draws the characters realistically, and I liked how we hear the story from Claire’s perspective. Claire is good in the lead, and I enjoyed how she has a sense of responsibility for her crew, and even the tiny moments like when she studies the inventory and food supplies and monitors the ship. As the story progressed, I felt like I was part of the crew with Voller, Kane, Lourdes, and Nysus. Each of them brought something new to the table, like Voller being loud, Kane being cautious, and Nysus with the details. Some highlights for me were when Claire sees her mother or navigating through the Aurora and discovering the bodies. The story leads to a thrilling climax, and I could not put the book down.

Overall, “Dead Silence” is an exciting science-fiction thriller worth checking out. I loved reading the book, even though I am not a science-fiction fan.
