The story has an intriguing concept, where Jude gets a job to house sit for Michelle Crane, but we find out Jude has an agenda. The author nicely toggles between two storylines, one revolving around Jude and the other around Libby. Initially where there is no connection between the two. It was interesting to see how the two storylines eventually merged. I enjoyed both characters in the lead, but I gravitated more towards Libby’s storyline and wondered what lengths she would go to to escape Neil.Also, the author writes the feelings of the characters nicely. You wonder about Jude, her past, Hester, and what she is hiding. There is a mysterious vibe in the phone conversations between Jude and an unknown person. Another moment that stood out was when Jude thought someone had taken her phone and got paranoid searching for it. Additionally, Jude’s persistent feeling of being observed adds to the excitement.Moreover, I enjoyed the ending. Considering that there are only four main characters, I was surprised that I didn’t catch the surprise in the end coming.However, the pacing meanders frequently, particularly in Jude’s storyline. Despite a strong start, the storyline becomes repetitive, with endless room searches and reflections about her predicament. The author paces the story very slowly, where you feel like you are rereading the same chapter. Additionally, there were moments when I found myself frustrated with Libby’s actions. As someone intelligent and tech-savvy, her eventual choices seemed illogical, considering her attempts to elude someone.Nevertheless, “The House Sitter” remains a reasonably enjoyable read. It’s a swift and engaging escape that will help while away the hours.
