This timely, rhyming picture book highlights the everyday heroes who make it possible for society to continue to function during this time of crisis. Besides, this includes diverse representations of mail carriers, teachers, grocery store workers, doctors. Also included are truck drivers, maintenance staff, and caretakers. The story ends with a reminder that when children wash their hands and follow pandemic guidelines, they themselves are heroes too. As such, the story is written from the perspective of a young child spending time indoors. And it focuses on those people who continue to contribute their time, effort, and energy to ensure that life can continue to go on. More so, with beautiful hand-drawn illustrations offset with large print text, this story is a must-read for all ages.

The story is straightforward for young children to read and follow along with

Who Are Our Heroes Review:

What a delightful concept! “Who are our Heroes” is a children’s book which focuses on the present time of living with uncertainty and being thankful for what we have.

The author did an excellent job in constructing the story. She highlights all the people who still adjust and continue to work and make our lives better during the times of global lockdown. She focuses on all the hardworking people, from the teacher, healthcare professionals to the trash cleaners. Moreover, she shows ways to still enjoy life indoors by spending time with family and loved ones. Although this book targets a younger audience, even adults will appreciate and get a sense of positivity from the story.

However, the only criticism I have in the story is in the illustrations. Don’t get me wrong; I loved how the illustrator drew the cute images and how it stood out in the book. While I adored the attractive way the pictures came out, I felt that some of the characters, like the mail-carrier and other workers, were not wearing masks (but some were, like the healthcare workers). It would have been nice if the illustrations showed consistency to all the people working outdoors to wear masks and follow the social norms.

Apart from that, I think the author and illustrator did a fantastic job of writing this timely children’s book. Overall, “Who are our Heroes” is a cute children’s novel and a sweet thank you to all the people who made this year easier to survive. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
