A Bachelors Pledge Review:
This was a sweet historical romance about searching for answers and falling in love along the way, and I enjoyed it.
The author draws the characters well in the story. Sophia is great in the lead as she tries to find answers to her family history. She also shares a wonderful chemistry with Phil and I liked how their romance progressed. Particularly, I loved the scenes where they unexpectedly reconnect in the Admiral’s presence. Also, I loved her friendship with Emmaline and the Admiral, and thought they made wonderful supporting cast. Similarly, Ruth Newbody and Jensen spice up the story as the negative characters, and I enjoyed the backstory as to why Newbody goes after Sophia.
Moreover, the author brings the story to life with unexpected twists and turns. The scenes where Sophia gets kidnapped, or when someone attacks Phil when he enters the house was unexpected and intense. On a side note, I also liked the historical references to Napoleon Bonaparte. Also, I was not aware of Governor Melvill prior to this story, so I liked that I learnt something new.
However, the only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because the story was quite bumpy in the beginning. As I have not read the previous books in the series, I really did not know if Sophia and Phil knew each other prior to this story or not. At times it feels like they share a history. If they didn’t, their instant romance threw me off. I didn’t get why Phil went out of his way to track Sophia and help her when he did not know her. But other than that, this story was very entertaining to read and I liked it.
