A Decent Crime Thriller with an Intriguing Premise
Molly Black delivers a fairly enjoyable crime thriller in All She Fears that, despite its flaws, exceeded my expectations. Having come across several negative reviews online, I honestly don't understand all the hate this book is receiving. I ended up reading it in one sitting, and while it may not be groundbreaking, it certainly has enough to keep you entertained.
What Works:
The premise is quite intriguing: a serial killer randomly targets high-profile celebrities, who all seem to share one common link. I liked how the mystery gradually unfolds as Jade attempts to piece together the clues and uncover the person responsible. Jade makes for a decent lead, and I enjoyed following her investigation. Her relationship with Connor is another aspect I appreciated. Their initial interactions aren't particularly smooth, but watching them gradually become more comfortable with each other as they work towards solving the case was enjoyable. Their evolving dynamic adds a nice personal element to the investigation without completely overshadowing the mystery. The author also introduces an intriguing development towards the end that serves as a teaser for what's to come in the series. While I haven't committed to reading the next instalment just yet, it certainly left me curious enough to consider picking it up.
What Falls Short:
My biggest issue was the lack of clarity surrounding the killer's execution of the crimes. Although the motives and the significance of the ghost orchid are explained, I felt the author could have provided more detail about how the murders were actually carried out, for example how the killer managed to avoid surveillance cameras. These unanswered questions left me wanting a more convincing explanation. Moreover, the climax is decent, but fairly predictable if you're a seasoned crime-thriller reader. The pacing is also a little slow at times, although there is generally something happening in each chapter to keep the story moving.
Verdict:
All She Fears is a decent, entertaining crime thriller with an interesting premise, a likable protagonist, and an enjoyable partnership. While the execution could have been stronger, I had a good time reading it and may continue with the series.
Perfect for:
Readers who enjoy straightforward crime thrillers, serial-killer mysteries, and investigative protagonists.
