Two sisters become trapped in the underworld and in the scheme of deities, shapeshifters, and ghouls–in this lush and dangerous Phoenician mythology-inspired fantasy.

Sixteen-year-old sisters Samira and Rima aren’t exactly living the dream. Instead, they live with their maddeningly unreliable mother in a rundown trailer in Michigan. Dad’s dead, money’s tight, and Mom disappears for days at a time. So when Sam’s grandfather wills her the family valuables–a cache of Lebanese antiquities–she’s desperate enough to try pawning them before Mom can.

But she shouldn’t. Because one is cursed, forbidden, the burial coin of a forgotten god. Disturbing it condemns her and Rima to the Phoenician underworld, a place of wicked cities, burning cedar forests, poisoned feasts of milk and lemons, and an endless, windless ocean.

Nothing is what it seems. No one is who they say. And down here, the night never ends.

To get home–and keep her sister safe–Sam will have to outwit beautiful shapeshifters, pose as a royal bride, sail the darkest sea… and maybe kill the god of death himself.

    Vial of Tears Review:

“Vial of Tears” is a fantastic middle-grade adventure mythological fantasy filled with Lebanese culture that also takes you to the Underworld, and I could not put it down.

I loved everything about this story from the get-go. The author tells the story so grippingly that something thrilling happens in nearly every chapter. Some fantastic scenes just stood out and etched in my mind. For instance, I loved Sam’s part with the women in the tent, skeptical to know her future. My second favorite was when she gets a sense of Deja Vu when she sees the picture before the guards chase her. Another unforgettable moment was when Sam swims and sees a shadow circling beneath her.

Similarly, world-building is also incredible. The Underworld is a place where nothing is what it seems, and it was fascinating to see what was real and what wasn’t. The story impressed me because the author has the underlying current of love and family throughout the book. For instance, my heart went out to Sam and Rima when they thought they saw their father. The author also adds unique fantasy elements like Shapeshifters and magical artifacts to the story, giving it a special touch.

The characters are also lovely. I loved Sam in the lead as she coped with what happened to her father and her mother’s disappearance. Even the supporting characters like Eshmun, Teth, and Meem added nicely. I also adored the middle-eastern terms I got to know, like the “Baalbek” and “Ruha.” The author perfectly executed everything about the story, from the characters, plot, and mythology aspects.

Overall, I loved “Vial of Tears” and found it one of the best middle-grade adventure mythology books I have read this year.

A set of magical triplets, two warring dynasties, and a broken crown waiting for its rightful owner…

Deep within an enchanted forest lies a castle where a set of triplets and their sorceress mother have lived for years — safe from the decades-long war for the Raven Throne that rages in the kingdom beyond. Cordelia, one of the triplets, has the power to become any animal with just a thought, and she yearns to discover more about the world outside her castle.

But one day, the world comes to her, when the eldest of the triplets becomes the newest heir to the throne. Knowing that being named heir means certain death, Cordelia’s mother hid the truth about which child is the eldest when she hid them in the forest. When her family is captured, it’s up to Cordelia to use her powers to keep her siblings hidden and discover the truth about the Raven Heir — before it’s too late.

A thrilling new fantasy full of magic, adventure, and the power of family.

    The Raven Heir Review:

“The Raven Heir” is a beautiful start to “The Raven Crown” series, and I enjoyed it mainly because of Cordelia.

Initially, when I started reading this book, I didn’t know what to expect. I loved the Rapunzel vibes from initially reading about Cordelia (well, except that she has magical powers). Cordelia is a fascinating character, and I loved how unique the author made her. She can change into any wild animal, and I liked how the author describes her reactions, like transforming into a horse.

The author fills the story with action and adventure right from the first page. I feel the story has the perfect example of how a middle-grade fantasy adventure should be. We also get a magical world with forests, mountains, and kingdoms, with characters of special powers that make the story gripping. Some scenes shocked me, like what the grandmother does with the drink or fighting the soldiers. The author also adds shocking twists and turns, and we learn more about Cordy’s past. Lady Elianora is a formidable villain in the story, and I enjoyed how the author progressed the storyline.

Another reason why I liked his story is how the author portrayed the importance of family. The author also describes the relationship between the siblings realistically, where they bicker and make up as we would. Rosalind and Giles share a close bond with Cordy, as well as Connall. I felt all the characters brought something new to the story to make it memorable.

Overall, “The Raven Heir ” is a breathtaking middle-grade fantasy adventure with magic, and I enjoyed reading it a lot.

When Gregory Hoffenbach unearths a valuable stone while ploughing, he believes it could put an end to all his woes.

It doesn’t. In fact it’s just the beginning.

Greg heads into the city of Calver with his brother Ralph to try and sell the stone but soon they discover that there are plenty of people in the Kingdom who’d like to own Greg’s red stone.

Over the next few days, the brothers strike a deal with a prominent crime boss, stumble into a plot to overthrow the King and have a hand in the death of an over-ambitious hay salesman.

Fortunately for them, they’ve got help. Some very useful and very violent help.

It seems everyone wants Greg’s stone and they’ll stop at nothing to get it.
Greg? He just wants a new plough.

A story about working out what’s valuable in life and then trying to take it from someone else

    About the Author:

Tim Beeden is someone who likes to make things up. Things like stories, ideas and friends. He’s lived a varied life, has had thirteen different jobs, likes piña coladas and getting caught in the rain. He loves to travel and is utterly convinced he’s part Viking (much to his wife’s continual annoyance. Although he was once on holiday in Denmark where the locals often spoke to him in Danish which pretty much confirmed it as far as he’s concerned).

He’s married with one child. His wife is nothing like him (thank goodness) but his son is (thank goodness).

Greed is his first novel in a planned series of eleven books but he’s pretty new to this so isn’t aware of how ridiculous an ambition that is.

He genuinely hopes you enjoy reading Greed and that if you love it you tell your friends. If you read it and hate it, he wants you to tell your enemies so they have to suffer too. His website is: www.sevendeadlyandfour.com and he’d love for you to stop by and say hello.

    Greed Review:

Valuable stones, war machines, and mercenaries are only some of the many exciting things you will read about in “Greed.”

This book was hard to put down! I got immersed in Greg’s world as he finds the stone and shares the information with Ralph and Molly from the get-go. The story goes full swing once Eve and Bud enter the picture and set on their quest to Calver. The author does a terrific job of making the story exciting and adventurous humorously. Some of the intense scenes are when Greg and Ralph encounter the five men with weapons or Wolf. Interestingly, some characters have their secrets, and at times you tend to doubt even the main characters, like when Greg questions Eve about Keith. There are some interesting twists that I did not expect and added well to the tale.

Even though it is a fantasy novel, the author makes the characters realistic who connect with you. While it may seem like the book carries a vast cast of characters, I did not mind because I felt most of them brought something new to the story. Greg is the level-headed one who tries to do the right thing. Ralph was probably the most infuriating yet entertaining character in the story. While I wouldn’t say I liked how he got Greg into trouble, I couldn’t help but chuckle at how they handled the predicament. Ralph brings a touch of adventure and humor into the story. Similarly, Eve was exciting with her no-nonsense attitude, and I also adored Bud and felt he added nicely to the group. Again, even the negative characters like Augustus adds nicely to the mix.

Overall, “Greed” is a lovely fantasy novel, and I hope there will be a sequel to revisit these characters.

    Wilderness Spa Review:

“Wilderness Spa” is a beautiful tale about survival and human connections, and I was invested in the story throughout.

Firstly, I commend the author for writing such a beautiful story about human nature. I enjoyed reading this book for the variety of topics he covered as the story progresses. Even though the plot has exciting moments where the group tests their survival skills, their conversations were the story’s highlight as I read it. The characters talk about social norms, white privileges, and religious beliefs (to name a few), and it was interesting to see how various characters responded to the situation.

Tom is outstanding in the lead and was my favorite character. Even though he is unsure which is the best approach to managing the group, he shows a brave front and handles them well. He contemplates whether he needs to use anarchy or proper leadership to manage the team, and I liked how the author emphasized this point. I liked how Tom concentrated on their individual needs and saw specific strengths in the individuals. He also takes into consideration their physical problems and fears and handles them accordingly. Other than him, while I like the rest of the case, Ben and Ashley were my favorites too.

Apart from that, the author also adds some exciting moments to the story. He describes the scenes vividly with beautiful details that show how breathtaking and dangerous nature can become. Some parts that stood out for me were when Johnson’s airplane crashes or when they encounter a bear.

Overall, “Wilderness Spa” is a beautiful book to read if you are in the mood for a story of nature, survival, and an eclectic cast of characters.

Counting by 7s meets See You in the Cosmos in this heartwarming coming-of-age story perfect for the budding geologists and those fascinated by the mysteries of the universe.

Henry has always been fascinated by rocks. As a homeschooler, he pours through the R volume of the encyclopedia to help him identify the rocks he finds. So, when a meteorite falls in his family’s field, who better to investigate than this rock enthusiast–with his best friend, James, and his little sister, Birdie, in tow, of course.

But soon after the meteorite’s arrival, the water in Henry’s small Maine town starts drying up. It’s not long before news spreads that the space rock and Henry’s family might be to blame. Henry is determined to defend his newest discovery, but his knowledge of geology could not have prepared him for how much this stone from the sky would change his community, his family, and even himself.

Science and wonder abound in this middle-grade debut about an inquisitive boy and the massive rock that came down to Earth to reshape his life.

    About the Author:

Betty Culley’s debut novel in verse Three Things I Know I True, was a Kids’ Indie Next List Top Ten Pick, an ALA-YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults Nominee, an ALA-YALSA Quick Pick, and a Junior Library Guild selection. Her first middle-grade novel Down to Earth, is inspired by her fascination with meteorites, voyagers from another place and time. She’s an RN who worked as an obstetrics nurse and as a pediatric home hospice nurse. She lives in central Maine, where the rivers run through the small towns.

    Down to Earth Review:

“Down to Earth” is a fascinating, middle-grade adventure that makes you feel in awe of the Universe, and I loved reading it!

There are many reasons why I adored reading this book. For starters, I loved Henry and his curiosity and fascination for geology. I enjoyed the way he works with his friend James and his sister Birdie to try and find out more about the meteorite. He never gives up on a mission and tries his best to find a solution. One of his charming traits referred to an Encyclopedia to get information, reminiscing about my childhood days.

The author packs the story with thrills and adventure that would attract the target audience. Some of the scenes that shocked me were when Henry sees his Nana drink the water, or when James gets hurt, or when Dr. Morgan comes into the picture. The author paces the story to a satisfying climax that made you feel like you had a wonderful experience reading the story. Even the supporting characters like Braggy, Miles Morgan, and Fiona add nicely to the story.

Moreover, I felt like I learned so many new things from the story. I enjoyed the concept of water dowser and how the author incorporated it in the tale. Moreover, the author includes exciting facts at the beginning of each chapter to inspire a layperson to get interested in the subject. I never know about the Ahnighito, how meteorite metals react to magnets, or even what a spectrometer was. After reading this book, I am antsy to learn more about quarries and meteorites.

Overall, “Down to Earth” is a beautiful middle-grade book that I think a person of any age would enjoy.

    Hunt the Storm Review:

Wow! I adored “Break the Stone” and wondered if the continuation would be equally good. There are very few books where I get blown away by the sequel compared to the previous book, and I loved “Hunt the Storm.” If you liked the first book, you would love this one!

The author ups the game and directly swings into action right from page one. She fills the story with action, adventure, romance, thrills, and chills. There are so many memorable moments from Kody at the Spiral, along with Cali’s storyline and Raelyn’s complicated relationship with her mother. I particularly enjoyed that because it didn’t go as smoothly as I thought it would. The author also ends the story with a shocking climax that makes me eagerly await to read the next book.

Raelyn and Kody bring in their game in this book, just like the first one. Moreover, the author also spices up the romance as she introduces Phoenix into Raelyn’s life. The chemistry that the two shares are complicated yet sizzling. More than Raelyn, I liked Kody a lot in this book. The author wrote his emotions beautifully, especially the conflicting feelings he has to do the right thing. Kody goes through some harsh moments, and I loved his strength and persistence. Similarly, I also found Quincy to be fascinating.

However, I feel that this is one of those books that you cannot read as a standalone. You can, but you wouldn’t get the full impact of its awesomeness. I highly recommend you read “Break the Stone” before reading this book.

Overall, “Hunt the Storm” is an excellent continuation of the “Golden Chains” series and surpassed my expectations.

    Break the Stone Review:

“Break the Stone” is a thrilling novel with full of turns and an exciting start to the series.

The author sets the action right from the first chapter as Raelyn vacates her house suddenly, and Kody gets orders to take the marble box. From then on, the author takes us on a wild journey as Raelyn, Kody, and Cali go on a thrill ride. There is never a dull moment in the plot, as something is always happening as Raelyn searches for answers. Many moments stood out for me in the story, like when they search for the photographer Emma or when Kody gets shot. I was also intrigued as to who Joanna was. On a side note, I also liked the playlist the author provides in each chapter, most of which are my favorites.

Raelyn (I love her name) and Kody are both excellent in the lead. However, the instant love was a bit weird at the beginning, where Raelyn wants to kiss Kody immediately. However, while I was not a fan of instant love, I enjoyed their scenes together in the story. I also loved the complicated relationship that Raelyn shared with her father. While they would not agree to things, I liked how realistically the author portrayed their bond. Cali is adorable as the supporting friend and added value to the storyline too. Similarly, Synder and Yohann are creepy. Even Bear is cute in the way he shared scenes with Raelyn.

Moreover, the author also ends the story nicely and sets the pace for the next book in the series, “Hunt the Storm.” Overall, “Break the Stone” is a beautiful start to the “Golden Chains” series, and I am excited to read its continuation.

Archibald Lox and the Forgotten Crypt Review:

I loved reading the first three books of the Archibald series last year and was excited to read the next three in the set.

In ” Archibald Lox and the Forgotten Crypt,” we see Archibald reunite with his old friends Cal, Princess Ghita and Cindy, as they go back to the Sapphire and finds themselves in another quest.

There is a dull moment in the story as the author takes us back to the Merged. The author also adds many exciting moments, like when Orlan and Argate chase Archie or when Hugo and Inez uncover shocking secrets. The story ultimately leads to a gripping Tournament that Archie experiences, making the story exciting to read.

What’s nice about the series, in general, is how you learn something new about the world in each book. Archie is terrific in the role and continues to shine in the series. Even though he is a master locksmith, he doesn’t act smug about it. Moreover, the author also introduces us to a new character, Kojo, who I found fascinating. The story also ends in a cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next book immediately.

Apart from the adventure, I also liked the personal moments between the characters. For instance, I enjoyed Archie’s rapport with Winston and how Winston opens up to him about Stefan. Even the supporting characters like Baba Jen were friendly as he imparts advice to Archie. Similarly, even the scenes where Archie bonds with Cindy are adorable.

Overall, ” Archibald Lox and the Forgotten Crypt ” is a beautiful start to the second set in the series and is off to a promising start.

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents the sequel to Tehlor Kay Mejia’s critically acclaimed own-voices novel about science-obsessed Paola Santiago.

Six months after Paola Santiago confronted the legendary La Llorona, life is nothing like she’d expected it to be. She is barely speaking to her best friends, Dante and Emma, and what’s worse, her mom has a totally annoying boyfriend. Even with her chupacabra puppy, Bruto, around, Pao can’t escape the feeling that she’s all alone in the world.

Pao has no one to tell that she’s having nightmares again, this time set in a terrifying forest. Even more troubling? At their center is her estranged father, an enigma of a man she barely remembers. And when Dante’s abuela falls mysteriously ill, it seems that the dad Pao never knew just might be the key to healing the eccentric old woman.

Pao’s search for her father will send her far from home, where she will encounter new monsters and ghosts, a devastating betrayal, and finally, the forest of her nightmares. Will the truths her father has been hiding save the people Pao loves, or destroy them?

Once again Tehlor Kay Mejia draws on her Mexican heritage to tell a wild and wondrous story that combines creatures from folklore with modern-day challenges.

    About the Author:

Tehlor Kay Mejia is an Oregon native in love with the alpine meadows and evergreen forests of her home state, where she lives with her daughter. When she’s not writing, you can find her plucking at her guitar, stealing rosemary sprigs from overgrown gardens, or trying to make the perfect vegan tamale. Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares Review:

“Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares” is a book that I was highly anticipating reading because I loved the first book, and it did not disappoint!

While I devoured the first book in one sitting, I loved this story more than “River of Tears.” The author makes sure to stay true to the theme of the first story yet, making it distinctive from it at the same time. I felt the story picked up full speed when Pao goes to see Señora Mata at the hospital. Hospitals tend to creep me out in general, and this book had scenes with creepy supernatural stuff taking place that gave me shivers. The story brilliantly continues as we have mysterious creatures like the Fantasma and beasts, a crazy road trip, and many other twists and turns.

Paola is again fantastic, and I feel she is one of my top favorite characters in the RRP series world. She goes through a lot in the story, and I could not turn my eyes away when she meets her father. Moreover, I was surprised by Paola’s friendship with Naomi in the tale, as it was not something I anticipated. The two of them form a very dynamic duo as they go on their adventure. Similarly, the author shocks us with incidents surrounding Dante, Emma, and even Pao’s mom. On a side note, I also liked the LGBTQ nod around Emma and that we got to know more about her in this book.

Overall, “Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares” is an excellent continuation of the “Paola Santiago” series and exceeded my expectations. I wonder how the third book can top it off.

    Mountain of Flame Review:

“Mountain of Flame” was a satisfying end to an exciting trilogy filled with adventure, angst, and emotional drama.

Firstly, I must commend the author for executing this series so nicely. Having read the series in order, I must say that the author made each book more addictive than the previous one. Anna is electrifying in the lead as always, but I felt she shined extra this book. She needs to defend Sunderland by herself from evil forces. I loved her strength in the story and how she deals with numerous storylines. The author also made some of her scenes exciting, like her coronation. I also particularly loved the moment when Anna encounters the stag and drinks the liquid.

Moreover, I adored that the author focused on Jack again. The plot shines as we have Jack and Anna back, even with Zac in the picture. What’s interesting about the series is that the author never makes the plot feel repetitious. Even though the theme is consistent, we see the characters encountering new situations.

Furthermore, I liked how the author focused on Anna and gave importance to secondary characters as well. There are many memorable moments with the cast, like when Gavriella has to decide about Owin, when Tobias gets attacked, or when Gavrielle sails with pirates. The author never writes a dull moment in the tale, as something new happens to the characters in every chapter. Similarly, there are also characters that you love to despise, like Felicity.

Overall, I found “Mountain of Flame” a great conclusion to the series. If you are looking for adventurous young adult fantasy, you should check out the “Gems of Fire” series.
