In the distant future, a genetic plague has separated humanity in two –Subterraneans who live in underground burrows to protect their health, and strong surface-dwelling Omniterraneans.

Zuzan Cayan, a brilliant Subter girl with “light blindness,” is about to leave the safety of her burrow and earn a living. With her low life expectancy, however, her options are slim. That is until she’s offered the chance of a lifetime to study the population’s broken genetic code, fix the divide and reunite the world once again.

But when a new virus turns fatal for the Omnits, Zuzan must find a cure or humanity won’t simply remain separate, it will become extinct.

With enemies on all sides, Zuzan must hold on to the light at the end of the tunnel – or risk the world falling into darkness.

    About the Author:

Mary Baader Kaley loves the sound of spring crickets, the Midwestern colors of fall, and shady porches in between. She spends summers healing her soul over long walks while smiling into the sun. “Burrowed” is a gripping science fiction dystopian novel with promising characters surrounding a rich world, and I enjoyed reading it.The story’s highlight is Zuzan, her journey, and her connections with the rest of the cast. Zuzan is a solid and empathetic character, and you see various layers to her as she helps the children get better and figure out her place in life. A lot of the supporting characters also make the plot strong. For instance, I enjoyed the temperamental feelings that Zuzan faces with Crick, Griffith, and Nukleo (I particularly enjoyed Griffith). Similarly, even Maddelyn was interesting, as she appears sporadically but triggers some of the incidents in the tale with her behavior. Moreover, the author also adds a touch of romance where I warmed up to Zuzan and Ringol. The two of them don’t get off to the best start, and I was intrigued with how the author progressed their relationship, especially towards the climax. Also, I found myself intrigued with the world-building as we see Subterraneans and the Omniterraneans and the Omnit Rebellion that takes place. Some scenes shocked me, like the horrors she faces at Woynauld Military Academy. Other memorable scenes were Zuzan’s initiation speech and Optotech Hahn examining and changing her life. The author adds some nice twists that you don’t expect that shock and betray Zuzan too. However, the only downside to the story is that the pacing staggers in the second half. The first half is a whirlwind as we see Zuzan facing unspeakable challenges. But, the excitement in the second half comes down for a while and again picks up. While I enjoyed the medical aspects in the second half, I would have also liked some more danger and excitement.Overall, “Burrowed” is a gripping dystopian novel worth checking out.

Under the rule of a tyrant,  there was a division of Americans  by race and class. Hate and inequality reigned. Hispanics and Blacks had no choice but to overthrow the government and exterminate the Caucasian “Europe” race. The few Europes who managed to survive are now classified as Lower Residents and treated as slaves to rebuild the New America—The Southern Region.

Sixteen-year-old Saige, whose parents broke the “purity clause”, pays for their mistake far after their publicized executions. As an Impure, she now must escape the tyranny and sneak over the Border to freedom. Avi’s chance to succeed her father as General, is conflicted by her loyalty to her authoritarian Elite family and her love for a Europe rebel. Leo, a Lower Resident worker who rebels believe God has sent, will lead them to salvation against the Union. These three teenage adversaries from different castes forcefully rely on one another to thwart a dictator’s plans for mass genocide.

And they’re about to start a revolution.

    About the Author:

Leah Vernon is an international bombshell with a double masters in business and creative writing. Her name has been in high-profile campaigns such as Ugg “Feel You” and Fitbit’s “Feel Your Power”.

She’s the first visibly plus-size Hijabi influencer to hit the mainstream with over four million views combined. She’s also an author of The Union and Unashamed: Musings of a Fat, Black Muslim.

Leah V isn’t your regular influencer; She’s a disruptor, a trendsetter, and a changemaker in her perspective fields. She began her blogging journey back in 2013, when she fell deep into disordered eating and noticed that there was no one that looked like her that was considered “worthy” or “beautiful”. And, frankly, she was tired of sucking her stomach in around her skinny friends.

With a grainy android phone and clothes from the clearance racks, she began paving her own way through the fashion industry. She used her fat, Black, and unapologetic Muslim body as a rebellion. Beauty is NOT one size fits all. She moved to New York and began smashing glass ceilings. To date, she has worked with renowned brands like Target, Dove, and Amazon just to name a few.

After years of brands telling her she had no place in the fashion world, that she was not “marketable” enough, Leah V carved her own beauty standards.

    The Union Review:

“The Union” is a wonderful young adult, science fiction, dystopian about the cruel world between the Impure and the Elites, and I could not put it down.

The first aspect I liked about the tale is how the author included all the elements of the regular dystopian novel but also made the characters so enigmatic that they made it feel special. I loved Saige and Avi’s storylines and how the author toggled between the two. Both are strong, show immense bravery when faced with challenges, and are the tale’s highlight.

What also surprised me was how raw the author wrote some of the scenes. I got goosebumps seeing how cruel punishments Saige has to face while people like Avi and Jade lead privileged life because they are the elite. My heart went to Saige, and I was at the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen to her. Similarly, Avi’s storylines also intrigued me because of how different she is from the others, and she is not afraid to stand up and do what she feels is right.

The supporting cast also added nicely, and some of them were memorable. For instance, characters like Lox and Mama Seeya made the story stand out. Similarly, Head Gardner also gave me the chills, and I wondered how crueler the Union would get on Saige.

Moreover, the author immediately sets up the adrenaline. The few chapters dive into action and adventure as Saige gets arrested under pretenses. The author has a dynamic way of engaging you in the storyline and is now one of my favorite authors after this book.

Overall, “The Union ” is a great Young Adult Dystopian novel, and I highly recommend it!

    Nova’s Blade Review:

“Nova’s Blade” is a thrilling dystopian Young adult novel that I enjoyed reading!

As a big fan of “Hunger Games,” I thought this book was very entertaining because of how the author executed it. While it gives the vibes of “The Hunger Games,” the author makes it stand apart because of Nova. I think Nova is aggressive and daring yet shows a side of vulnerability. I loved her complex sibling dynamics with Luna after the effects of what happened to their mother.

Moreover, the authors add a lot of action and excitement, especially once the match starts for the Last Valkyrie. The chapters glued me during the games with Athena, Pixis, Bellona, Hybris, and Elpis. Some moments just shocked me because of the gore, and even I thought it fit perfectly with the story’s theme.

There is also a touch of young adult romance as we see Nova fighting her feelings for Atlas and Octavian. I liked Octavian a more prominent in the second installment. In addition, I also loved Maximus (and even Flavius) as they supported Nova and trained her well. The story also ends in a shocking cliffhanger, which makes me look forward to reading the second book in the series!

Perhaps the only minor downside to the tale is, at times, that I felt there were too many characters on canvas. For instance, Tyrel only comes for a short time, and I thought he was initially exciting, but he disappeared in a short time.

Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed “Nova’s Blade,” and I eagerly look forward to the second book in the series.

Wellington Thorneycroft is content picking pockets, taking Ambrosia, screwing prostitutes, and simply surviving in the hellish, walled City. But everything changes when he spots a spectral woman who wordlessly conveys the message: We’ll escape together. Suddenly, Thorneycroft’s life is turned upside down as he’s pulled along a circuitous path to an unknowable freedom: a path marked by violence, sex, and metaphysical dread.

The Sun Casts No Shadow Review:

When I started reading “The Sun Casts No Shadow,” I had no idea how complex it would get. The author does a great job setting up the dystopian world with the City, Wall, Troopers, and the Factory. Initially, when you read the blurb, you feel it would be a run-of-the-mill dystopian tale where the protagonist tries to beat the system. True, it is that in some ways, but it is so much more. There was never a dull moment in the tale, and the plot picks up as you dive into it. Some of my favorite moments were when Wellington and Lilith go through underground tunnels on their journey to freedom or when Wellington sees the stranger in the mirror. I also loved how the author incorporated dreams and premonitions into the tale, giving this story a surreal touch.

Moreover, the characters are unique and complex, and you don’t know how they react to situations. Wellington is great in the lead, and I liked his sarcastic humor. He shines in his scenes with Lilith, which to me, were the highlights. I enjoyed Wellington’s scenes with Dempsey, Riba, Gwyneth, and Felix. You don’t know who to trust, and I was glued to the story as Wellington works with them, changing his life.

Perhaps the only downside to the story was the climax. While I will not give the ending, I will say that it left me wanting more. I hope the author writes a sequel to this book, as I would love to revisit these characters.

Overall, “The Sun Casts No Shadow” is a compelling dystopian fantasy novel and a short read of fewer than 200 pages.

“No Child of Mine” is a story of a father’s journey to save his child from a totalitarian regime, who is in order to bury the truth prepared to exterminate an entire generation.

“The Collapse” took millions of lives and most of the country’s farming lands, bringing the surviving population of the island to the brink of starvation.

From the chaos and anarchy, a new state had emerged, known as The Federation Britannia, run by the single and unopposed Ordained Liberating Party. The Age of Cleansing had finished the purge, leaving behind a perfectly obedient electorate that marched every year in the Liberation Day parades, praising the Party’s leadership and following the Party’s every directive.

The rule of the Party is absolute. Its tool of compliance, the State Security Unit, is feared.

Tom is a true believer. He loves the Party with all his heart. He trusts in the Party’s wisdom. The Party had raised him, rewarding his devotion and love with a lucrative engineering job, and after the approval for the Procreation licence, it also granted him a family.

But the unexpected midnight visit by the State Security to his flat  for questioning ,unsettles Tom . The following day Tom witnesses the State Security troops, marshalling the children from his daughter’s nursery, packing them into trucks and taking them into the unknown.

Tom is forced to make a decision: either to follow the Party directive and to surrender his child into its plenary care or to protect what he loves and run.

But there’s no escape from the island or from the complete control of the Ordained Liberating Party.

    No Child of Mine Review:

“No Child of Mine” is a brilliant dystopian high adrenaline novel that I could not put down!

Oh my goodness! Where do I begin with this book? The story was just perfect from start to end for this genre. I enjoyed how the author set up the theme for this dystopian novel. The author adds dark moments to the story, right from the beginning, when the man yells orders at Judy, and the officials of the Ordained Liberating Party come and search her home. As the story progresses, the author takes on a high speed as our leads become fugitives. The author takes us on a journey of action, adventure, suspense, and thriller, and I loved every minute of it.

I loved Tom and how he tried to do the honorable thing. In the beginning, I thought Judy would be the star, but Tom stole the spotlight. I could not put down the book at all after the incidents that took place in the hospital. Tom goes through so many emotions as he tries to do the honorable thing, even if it means going against what he has learned. Another memorable scene is when they meet the older man. You don’t know whether you can trust Felix or not. I enjoyed Judy as well and wished we had seen more of her. Even though the citizens of the State feel that they have independence, Judy knows how the Party ties her hands in so many situations, including taking care of her child Tilly.

The story also ends beautifully and unforgettably, making this one of the best dystopian books I have read this year. Overall, “No Child of Mine” is an excellent story to read if you are in the mood for something exciting and different.

In less than a year, fifteen-year-old Gypsy Capone will be considered a woman in Ovoidia, a “utopian” city state where every woman can be approached for immediate sex by any man.  And where curving architecture adheres to the feminine form,  no knives  and sporks are the only cutlery. Also true intimacy between the genders is a sign of suspect subversion. After all, if a woman just plays along, she’ll also do her job and have children.  She will have the reward of a fine home in the “Communities,”with other “Mamas” in harmony with everything they need.

The irony: Diam and Isis, the two current leaders of Ovoidia, are themselves a part of a legacy of females known as the Head Gajes. Fun, yes! And just below the surface, perversely sinister. The Head Gajes personally execute these precise sacrifices by women to establish their absurd utopia. And they have the backing of their chosen army of male “crusaders,” enforcing a crime-free, fully controlled society.

Not surprisingly, in Ovoidia women have evolved until they feel nothing of sexual pleasure. But in Gypsy’s deepest heart, she realizes her own dark secret: she is the exception. To save her body and even her soul, Gypsy chooses a dangerous path—to single-handedly confront this scary and unpredictable world. She believes she has the support of her allegiant sister Sadie and Miles Devine, a rogue, secretly gay crusader, and also “Doctor,” a morally questionable physician to help her. But none of them fathom the levels of paradox, incongruity, and twisted evil they will soon face, and the ride becomes something even Gypsy could have never imaged.

    The Willing Review:

“The Willing” is a fascinating Dystopian with a unique plot, and the author executed it well!

To begin with, I liked the concept of the story. While the story takes place in a Dystopian setting, what’s interesting is how the author heightened the stereotyped of what we expect of men and women. The author beautifully takes some severe issues like trafficking and blends them into this exciting world. I had no idea in which direction the story would move, and it turned out to be a fun read.

Moreover, the characters also shine in their storylines. The author wrote Gypsy very well, where you see how anxious and upset she becomes at the prospect of what they expect of her. Some of the highlights of the story revolved around her conversations with Crusader Katz and Diam. My heart went out to her at times, and I was wondering what she would do.

Moreover, I enjoyed how the author doesn’t focus only on Gypsy, and we have a large cast of characters. Each character you meet (well, except maybe Diam and Isis) has conflicts they are trying to resolve. I particularly loved Miles and Rigby and how they have this secret relationship and have their plans. Similarly, even Sadie added well as she starts working for Miles. The Doctor also had so much potential because of his low esteem, and I wished the author had made him more prominent in the tale.

However, I felt the ending was anti-climactic and not one which I would have expected. Also, some of the plots felt like they were left open-ended. While I find such conclusions a hit or miss, it would have been nice if the decision differed.

Apart from that, I enjoyed reading “The Willing” and found it different.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne Review:

“The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne” is an incredible young adult fantasy adventure that I could not put down.

Firstly, kudos to the author for setting up such a fantastic world. The environment is part dystopian, part Western, part futuristic, part science fiction, and just excellent altogether. I loved the Tainted concept and how the story gave me a “Stranger Things” vibe. Right from the first page, the author sets the pace of what to expect as Scarlett plots her next move for a robbery. The story goes full swing once Albert enters the picture.

Secondly, the characters are the highlight of the tale. I loved Scarlett and Albert as individuals and how they interacted together. Scarlett is wise and goes to the point. At the same time, Albert is sensitive yet powerful and adds a touch of humor through his innocence. I loved the way the two bonded and how they got closer with each other throughout their journey. But, no story can shine without a conniving villain, and I was not too fond of Dr. Calloway at all.

Thirdly, the author paces the story so well that you feel a different emotion at certain parts. I found myself laughing at some of Albert’s behavior and was scared to turn the page in other moments, like when Scarlett and Albert look for Ettie. There were also moments where I felt protective towards Albert when he encountered Carrie, or the team met the likes of Pope, Lee, and Shilling. Similarly, the author also ends the story on a high note, where you realize there is so much potential for the series and our two main leads.

Overall, I loved everything about “The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne” and cannot wait to revisit these characters soon.

    Midnight Black Review:

“Midnight Black” is a disturbing yet very creative and gripping dystopian novel that had me engrossed.

I enjoyed the concept of the story. A man sentenced for seventeen years to another planet finds life on Earth completely different when he returns. Even though this is a science fiction, dystopian novel, some elements connect to us. Moments like when Billy witnesses officials attacking protestors with batons remind us of what we have seen in the news for the last few years.  Some scenes shocked me, like the ones involving Rubio and Alvera.

Billy is gripping in the lead, and I liked how the author wrote him. From the beginning, Billy comes off as a no-nonsense guy eat how he reacts with his fellow inmates like Quasi and the annoying Donald P. Costigan. There were moments when I could connect when him, especially when he lands on Earth and finds how much it has changed. I also liked his interactions with Hank and Chris. I also enjoyed how the author wrote his chemistry with Jade and was not fond of Chernov and Gustav.

Moreover, the author also adds personal moments like when Billy contemplates how the human relationship matters in the end. The author also nicely throws in some humor in the dialogues to balance the seriousness of the tale. For instance, it was a nice touch with Billy reunites with someone from his past to work on the assignment. Even though the story is dark and graphic, I admired how the author inserts moments of hope and gratitude for us to appreciate the world we live in and make the most of it.

Overall, “Midnight Black” is an intriguing novel, and I recommend it to those who love a gripping Dystopian science fiction crime story.

    The Freedom Race Review:

Firstly, this book is probably one of the very few that took me the longest time to finish because of its intricate details and world-building. The author creates the world and the characters in such detailed information that you take a step back to absorb it all. She gives creative names for the characters, builds unforgettable territories, and wrote a heart-wrenching yet hopeful story. Set in a dystopian world, the author takes us on a fascinating journey as a girl sets her heart on freedom.

Moreover, Jiji is fantastic, and I rooted for her in every step of her journey. She is one of those characters who I will never forget as one of my fictional favorites because of the hardships she suffers. There are so many memorable characters like Silapu, Afarra, and Tiro who compliment Jiji’s story. However, I have two favorite moments in the report. The first being her adventure and friendship with Lucky. Lucky is a beautiful character, and I loved their scenes together as they talk about their lives and deal with Chet and Zinc. My second favorite moments were when Jiji meets Man Cryday, who saves her from the mutants.

However, this book is not a short or easy book to read. There are moments of rape, murder, slavery that will hit you hard. Probably my only minor criticism of the story is that it is very long at times. The author adds many details to how Jiji thinks and reacts to various situations, which the author could have trimmed. Nevertheless, I admire the author for taking writing this novel and am curious to see if there will be a sequel.

Overall, “The Freedom Race” is a book I would recommend if you are in the mood for gripping dystopian adventure fantasy.

    The Nirvana Effect Review:

This book was a remarkable experience! It skillfully weaves together captivating character development, an engaging plot, and thrilling twists that had me completely engrossed – literally on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning each page!

Firstly, the core characters were a true highlight. Among them, Marc stood out as my favorite due to the complexities of his emotions. His internal conflict, torn between the advantages and disadvantages of chip technology and the potential implications of the government’s involvement, added a compelling layer to his persona. Equally, I found myself drawn to Aaron and Sam, who resisted the allure of the chip, yearning for a more authentic and meaningful existence. My heart genuinely went out to Sam when the author explored the dangers of an intrusive surveillance state and the extreme measures the government would employ to maintain control—additional unforgettable moments included the raid on the sanctuary, the intriguing events surrounding Lorraine and Flynn, and Aaron’s confrontation with Doctor Delight.

Moreover, the futuristic dystopian setting of the novel was nothing short of enthralling. Serving as a cautionary tale, it effectively illustrated the potential hazards of excessive reliance on technology and the consequences of forsaking genuine experiences for artificial ones. The exploration of themes like addiction, the erosion of humanity, and the relentless pursuit of happiness in a world dominated by the “chip” phenomenon offered profound food for thought and left a lasting impression on me.

From moments of hope and camaraderie shared by characters like Aaron and Clarissa to the depths of fear and despair experienced by Sam, the author takes the readers on a profound journey. In conclusion, “The Nirvana Effect” is a must-read, delivering a powerful and unsettling vision of the future. It masterfully blends suspense, emotional resonance, and social commentary to create an unforgettable reading experience.
