Once Upon Academy The Winter Ball Review:

“Once Upon Academy Winter Ball” is the second book in the anthology series and equally fun as the first book.

I love how the creators teamed up for the concept of the book. We see characters from different fairy tales who attend the academy come together for the Winter Ball in this volume. However, they encounter drama, excitement, and other exciting thrills in the process. Having read the first book, I loved revisiting the characters from the first book, like Zeke, Perle, Ryder, and even Ms. Fay. Below is my review of each tale.

Mice and Magic: What a fun start to the series. While the story starts slowly, it is in full swing once Melanie and her posse wreak havoc. Cindy is great as she tries to communicate with Eton and Raven, and I wondered what would happen.

Secrets of the Ring: Mandevar and Grenna return in another tale, and I loved the storyline with the Djinn, the ring, and the carpet. Ida is an interesting character, and I enjoyed the scenes with Mande hearing his mother.

Perle of Love: This was my favorite story in the book! I loved how the author wrote Zeke and the conflicting feelings of feeling defective and disappointed. Similarly, Perle’s storyline is gripping with what happens with Tilda.

Fear No Raven: This one was interesting because of the twist between Balen and Astrid on trying to kill him. The author wrote their romance beautifully and almost had a gothic feel.

Shadowed Hearts: A sweet conclusion to the anthology featuring one of my favorite characters Ryder and his feelings for Gemma.

Overall, “Once Upon Academy Winter Ball” is a beautiful addition to the series, and I hope the writers continue to make more!

    Once Upon Academy Anthology Review:

“Once Upon Academy” is a creative collection of fantasy stories of students with special powers getting admission to the Once Upon Academy, and it was delightful! Below are my thoughts on the tales.

Bird’s Eye View – What an excellent start to the anthology! I loved the chemistry between Nettie and Reggie, and the plot was grand!

Song of the Reaper – I liked Lyra in the lead as she joins OUA and undergoes training of Reaperhood. The story has exciting moments, like when Lyra plays the flute.

Sense & Sensitivity – I loved that this story focused on subjects in the academy like herbology. Quilo is fascinating, and my favorite moment was Adeline’s incident in the Enchanted Woods.

Swindled Hearts – One of my favorite stories in the anthology! I loved Ryder and his chemistry with Gemma surrounding the emerald. Even Jackson was fun.

Perle of Wisdom – Another lovely tale about Perle fitting in, and I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Zeke.

Bone Stars – Another highlight in the book. I enjoyed Grenna and Mandevar’s scenes together, especially how mysterious he was. Moreover, the story had hints of a fun Hansel and Gretel retelling.

A Stormy Romance: This story was fun because of the crossover with characters from the other stories, and I liked the dynamics between Aina and Taren, especially when there is another girl in the picture.

The King’s Son and Little Gem – Perhaps the most extended story in the anthology but entertaining. Hesse and Kalmin sizzle. I loved Sebastian and the backdrop of Valkyrie history.

Taming Her Might – a sweet story that I enjoyed because there was hardly any romance and focused only on Celeste, her powers, and dragons!

Malefic Mixology – An amicable conclusion with teen drama with Stephan and Li Feng.

An accidental journey through a magic mirror. A portal to an enchanted land. A mysterious family she never knew she had. Hayden’s life is upended with the wonder of Destiny Falls. But it is tainted by the danger that brought her here and that threatens her newfound family. Can Hayden and her sassy sidekick remove the threat, so that she can begin her magical new life in this captivating world?

When Hayden was a child, she lost her cat. Adults told her the cat ran away, but she knew the truth. The mirror had taken her. She knew because the mirror gave her a glimpse of an alternate world and had nearly pulled her in, so she was certain the cat had suffered that fate.

Twenty years later Hayden discovers the secret of the mirror when she is thrust into it. She learns of an enchanted world she never knew existed, and a family she never knew she had.

But danger brought her here, and it followed her. Now, Hayden is on a mission to remove the threat, so that she can begin her magical, meaningful new life in this enchanted world.

    Falling into magic Review:

“Falling into Magic” is the first book of the “Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic” series and was very entertaining.

The first aspect that struck me is the adorable method of the author’s writing style. The author narrates the tale in a childlike, whimsical manner that makes you feel like reading a classic. I got absorbed in Hayden’s world as she found herself going through a portal that would change her life.

Hayden is lovely, and I liked how she handled the mystery and challenges that came her way. She has a beautiful bond with Axel, and their relationship is one of the highlights of the tale. As the story progresses, the author also introduces the more extensive cast of the Cardwell family, where Hayden finds herself as a possible target in a murder mystery. Characters like Eleanor and Han were also intriguing. Similarly, Latifa was adorable and one of my favorite characters. Also, I enjoyed the cozy mystery aspect because there are quite a lot of suspects to go through.

Moreover, the author also constructed the world-building nicely, and I enjoyed how the environment shifted itself to suit the resident. For instance, I loved how the library positioned itself for Hayden to enter it. Some shocking moments like when Hayden sees the bearded guy, or the incident with the car, added well to the tale.

However, at times I felt there was too much in the story. For instance, certain characters feel unnecessary when looking back, like Ian and Indigo. Some paragraphs felt repetitive, like Hayden’s love for the library or missing her family in Seattle, that staggered from the mystery element. Also, the storyline with the witch, while entertaining, felt disconnected.

Nevertheless, overall, “Falling into Magic” is a promising start to the series and worth reading.

    A new Slayer for a new generation…

Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers—including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi—might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born.

But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next.

Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!

The first in an all-new series by New York Times best-selling author Kendare Blake continues the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer featuring the next generation of Scoobies and Slayers who must defeat a powerful new evil.

    About the Author:

Kendare Blake is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels and short stories. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She lives and writes in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked Sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.

    In Every Generation Review:

I loved buffy the vampire slayer back in the day, and it’s so much fun to revisit these characters. Considering that Buffy has a considerable fanbase, I wondered how the author would pull the story off without upsetting the show’s fans.

My heart jumped with joy right from the first chapter when Spike, Willow, and Oz appeared, and we returned to Sunnydale. The author beautifully sets the entry for the next Slayer, now that Buffy is no longer in the picture, and Sunnydale is filled with vampires again. In some ways, this made me bittersweet to realize that we wouldn’t see Buffy anymore; but at the same time, I liked Frankie, Hailey, Sigmund, Spike, and the team as they went on their quest.

The author did an excellent job with the action and thrills as well. We see Frankie slay the vampires most awesomely in all true Buffy sense. It was also lovely to see the original cast use their full potential powers, like Willow’s powers of a witch. As the story progresses, you see the new Succoro and Countess studying the new Slayer, and the plot unfolds, which I felt paid a lovely homage to the series. Some notable moments in the tale are when Frankie does her first patrol or the creepy scene where Jane applies her makeup, and Buffy chases the demon and the brawl at the ravine.

However, some moments felt illogical, even within the plot. Moreover, I think the author did not give some legacy characters proper background, so those unfamiliar with the show would not get the references.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading the tale and thought the author paced it nicely, leading to a thrilling climax. Overall, “In Every Generation” is an admirable tribute and continuation to the classic series.

    Weakness means death. Or worse.

After I was abandoned as a child, I was taken in by the Shadow Pack. A group of ruthless, lawless, shifters who have only one rule: never let anyone see your weakness.

In exchange for them keeping me alive, I owe them. The leader of the Shadows is as handsome as he is ruthless. And he’s offered to wipe my debt in exchange for marriage. He’d offer protection, but it would cost me my freedom.

Survival in the Shadows depends on back alley deals and shady alliances. It’s become a way of life that I stopped questioning years ago. When a routine burglary goes wrong, I find myself captured by the one family I never should have crossed.

The Umbra family owns this city. They make us Shadow wolves look like the good guys. They should have killed me for my crimes, but there’s a tiny problem… It turns out Madoc Umbra is my fated mate.

Instead of killing me, I’m a prisoner. The rest of the family doesn’t know of our bond and I intend to keep it that way. Madoc’s brothers want to end my life; he wants to break the bond. I just want to get the heck out.

As long as I don’t let them see any weakness, I might have a chance of making it out of here alive.

Darkest Mate is a full-length paranormal romance. 17+ for dark content, steamy scenes, and language. This is book one in a trilogy and is not a standalone. Mind the cliff.

    About the Author:

Alexis Calder writes sassy heroines and sexy heroes with a sprinkle of sarcasm. She lives in the Rockies and drinks far too much coffee and just the right amount of wine.

    Darkest Mate Review

I recently read “Wolf Marked” by the author and thought the author did an equally admirable job writing “Darkest Mate.” Right into the tale, we get an idea bout the Shadow and the Umbra clan and how ruthless they are. The author amps the action and thrills from the first chapter as Ivy fights with Dax and meets the Dark Wolf. I enjoyed the fantasy elements and the concepts like the Alpha Challenge.

Ivy is lovely in the lead. Even though she was not the strong character I expected her to be, I liked how the author portrayed her, especially what she goes through with Holden and her mission. The author has a beautiful talent for writing fantasy romance, and I liked the chemistry between the characters. Some memorable parts were when Ivy shifts and has an experience with Dax under the moon or when Dax saves her when someone tries to drug her. The author also wrote the supporting characters well, and I had a passionate dislike for Stacey. The author also wrote the supporting characters well, and I loved the friendship between Ivy and Kate. Frankly, I thought this was a fun and decent start to the series.

However, the only criticism I have of the story is how the story felt a bit cliched at times. For instance, I’m not a fan of instant romances, and while I enjoyed the chemistry between Ivy and the Dark Wolf, it felt predictable. Also, I felt a lot happens towards the climax when Ivy goes under the mission and Madoc enters the picture. The book would have been perfect had the pacing been spaced out.

Overall, “Darkest Mate” is a fun start to the series, and I look forward to reading its continuation.

A captivating modern-day fantasy filled with intrigue, suspense, mythology, magical objects, and special abilities, Jo Visuri’s adventurous tale will sweep you away to mystical Auor Island—where nothing is quite as it seems!

A remote island. Old secrets. And a cascade of unintended consequences.

Long ago, four clans from earth’s four corners were given magical abilities to help save humanity from oblivion. For generations, their descendants have lived in hidden communities without in touch with regular humans, leading to whispers of unforeseen consequences.
Now, in the present day and for unknown purposes, one Clan quietly and desperately seeks the rumored, undiscovered offspring.

Meanwhile, in the heart of a northern archipelago, Elin Bodil leads a perfectly ordinary, happy life on Auor Island with her family. By accident, she meets both a motorcycle driving stranger and the new mysterious boy next door. And Elin’s world is turned upside down.
As Elin is drawn into a brewing supernatural conflict with her two unusual acquaintances on opposite sides, she must decide who to trust while unearthing her island’s secrets and those buried deep within herself. But when the search for answers triggers the Clan’s sinister schemes, Elin and her companions will have to confront far bigger and deadlier secrets than they ever imagined. And they’ll need much more than themselves to survive.

Welcome to Auor Island and the legend and magic within its ruins.

    The Undiscovered Descendants Review:

“The Undiscovered Descendants” is a gripping fantasy novel that would lure you into its exciting world and make you want more.

When the story started, I thought it would be another young adult drama novel as the new neighbor arrives. When they meet each other, Elin and Aeden have sizzling chemistry, and I wondered how it would progress. But, the story shook me when Hunter Tristan entered the picture and targeted Elin for the awakening ritual. The author opened a whole new world with the Dormant Descendants and Clans, and I could not put the book down.

The beauty of the tale is how all the characters appear somewhat gray, and you don’t know if they are hiding something. I enjoyed the dynamics of all the three characters, like when Aeden feels Elin slipping away from him when she spends more time with Tristan. The author also reveals the world in bits and pieces, so you fit the details as the story progresses. Some memorable moments in the tale are the scenes at the coffee shop or what happens at the dance. While the story starts off a bit slow, the author speeds the pace gradually, which eventually leads to a thrilling climax in the library.

There are some surprising twists that I did not see coming. I also enjoyed how the author toggled the storyline from the three characters’ perspectives, making you closely connect with them. The author ends the book in a cliffhanger that makes you scream at the story and look forward to the next installment.

Overall, “The Undiscovered Descendants” is a gripping start to the series, and I can’t wait to read how it continues.

    Heartless Prince Review:

“Heartless Prince” is a beautiful, magical tale!

I’ll be honest, when I started reading this book, I thought it was a little bumpy. The author dives right into the plot, and it took time for me to understand what was happening. However, I could not put it down once I invested in the storyline, particularly when Aradia’s Witch enters the picture. The story is on fire, especially when Evony has to find Nissa.

Evony is perfect in the role. On the one hand, she is adorable and naive for showing her emotions upfront, but on the other hand, she has a powerful force to sense the familiars. There were some sweet moments, like how she has a crush on Ammon. Similarly, Nissa was also one of my favorites, and I loved her spunk and attitude.

Moreover, the book has many thrilling moments, like when they go through the forest to sense the Familiars or when she meets the Guard. Some scenes also shocked me, like the attack on Paul when the Familiars attack the barrier.

The creators also did a beautiful job in executing the story. The plot is gripping from the get-go, and I was wondering how it would turn out. Right from the beginning, I questioned why the Familiars were after Evony. Similarly, the illustrations are also lovely, and I particularly love the expressions of the characters. I feel Lady Nissa made the story adorable because of her gestures and expressions. Even the way they draw the backdrop of Gallea is gorgeous.

The story leads to an exciting climax as well as a shocking cliffhanger. Overall, “Heartless Prince” was a gorgeous fantasy graphic novel, and I am excited to read its continuation.

Xavier Blackwood is the man every girl at my college dreams about at night, myself included, but I’d never let anyone know that.

Standing at 6’8 with steel grey eyes, he’s a walking dream, but he’s also a world-renowned jerk.

Who would have thought that one night, after dragging myself home after doing double shifts at the diner, I’d be jumped by three men…only to have Xavier come to my rescue.

Oh yes, Xavier bloody Blackwood saved my life…but the thing I saw, the CREATURE that ripped those men to shreds wasn’t the Xavier everyone knows.

    He wasn’t human…

He was a wolf, a demon, a creature from myths, and it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen until he attacked me too and knocked me out.

Humans that learn about the existence of werewolves have to die.

    …There are NO exceptions.

The Werewolf Xavier saved me, but now I am condemned to death

To make things worse, both Xavier and Axel claim I am their mate

    …this can’t be good.

    About the Author:

Sara Snow was born and raised in Texas, and she moved to the Washington, D.C. area after high school. She’ll always be a Texas girl at heart, though! Now she lives in Northern Virginia with her family and her adorably fierce Yorkshire Terrier, Loki. In fact, Loki inspired her to write her best-selling series “Luna Rising” (although he’s still more of a beta than an alpha!).

When not eagerly working on her next book, she loves to geek out at Marvel movies, play games with her family and friends, and travel around the world (when there isn’t a pandemic, that is!).

No matter where she or what she is doing, she can rarely be found without a book in her hand.

    Luna Rising Review:

“Luna Rising” is a guilty pleasure at its best and so much fun to read.

The author doesn’t in jumping right into the action. The story is short and filled with romance and thrills, and I could not put it down. I loved the concept of the Enchanted and wondered what would happen to Ruby.

Ruby is enjoyable in the read as she starts to know Xavier better. Xavier is probably the highlight of the show because I found him to be complex. He must follow his responsibilities, but he doesn’t know how to in Ruby’s presence. Some of the notable moments are when Ruby witnesses Xavier ripping the main to shreds or Natalie’s scenes with Ruby.

Speaking of romance, I also enjoyed how the author incorporated the love angle between Ruby and Xavier. The two of them share a tortured romance, where you know it won’t bode well and invite more problems. Yet, you cannot help but take in by their chemistry. It was sweet to see their first kiss and how they tried to understand their feelings for each other.

Another favorite character of mine was Adolfa, who I found fascinating. The scenes where Natalie goes to the Enchanted to find out more were intriguing. I liked how the author added various twists where you don’t know what will happen to Ruby, especially when Axel comes into the picture. The author also ends the story in a cliffhanger where you want to pick up the next book and continue reading.

Overall, “Luna Rising” is an entertaining start to the “Luna Rising” series, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

    Alien’s Captive Review:

If I had to describe a book that I would consider a guilty pleasure reading, it would be “Alien’s Captive.”

The author did a lovely job of writing the characters’ emotions as well as the world-building. Ava is fun! She doesn’t let something like getting abducted in space stop her from being brave. However, I also liked how the author portrayed her emotions nicely, like the scenes where Ava feels unsure who to trust and if Ava had made a mistake. I loved her when she wanted to be part of the mission.

Similarly, Xelan is also compelling as she tries to understand his feelings for Ava. The author writes romance nicely, and I felt drawn towards the chemistry between Xelan and Ava as soon as he finds her in the slave pen. Ava soon becomes his Truxoria, who he feels he has to protect. Moreover, I enjoyed the flashbacks (or his backstory) with Calzara. The author also spiced up the scenes between the two, and the steamy romance added nicely. There are also characters you despise, like the dastardly Calth.

Another character who I found captivating was Brok. Even though he makes a guest appearance in a few scenes, he brings an aura of mystery, and I wanted to know more about him. The characters are what made this story so enjoyable to read.

There are some adventurous moments as well, like the shocking moments that Ava witnesses on stage. Some exciting moments are when Xelan falls in front of Ava or when they go to the party.

Overall, “Alien’s Captive” is an exciting start to “Earth Brides & Alien Warriors,” and I look forward to reading its continuation.

    Can you survive the snotpocalpyse?

Jackson Hart loves picking his nose. But when he finds a tiny warrior in his booger, everything turns WEIRD and DANGEROUS! Not only does he have a civilisation of snotlings up his nose . . . one wants revenge.
Mucuszar and his awful germ army have conquered both nostrils and Jackson’s world is next!

Can Jackson and his friends stop the snotpocalypse? Or will Mucuszar’s deadly creation destroy the planet?

    About the Author:

I became a writer because I had a story to tell. A story about snot! It may seem strange to write a book about boogers, but growing up, my little brother tormented me with his snot every… single… day!

I got my degree in Creative and Professional Writing and studied numerous courses and books, applying everything I had learnt to my book. It took me a short six years and now Snotlings is nearly ready to be shared with everyone.

To know that families around the world will squish together in bed and read my story and laugh- as I did with my Mum and brother- brings me so much happiness!

    Snotlings Review:

If you can get past the image that the world-building of this story revolves around the boogers from someone’s nose, this book is very entertaining! Get ready for a “snotastic” adventure as you read “Snotlings”!

I have to hand it to the author for coming up with such a creative concept for the story. As soon as Jackson sees a warrior who lives in his nose who can communicate with him, I wonder how the story would progress. The author adds in a lot of adventure as the team prepares for the snot zombies. Crust and Goober made a good team, and I liked reading their exciting action-adventure scenes. Crust was my favorite warrior, and I loved how he risked his life for the greater good to protect everyone from the evil Mucuszar, or when he survives the rapids and the close bond he shares with his father. Moreover, some moments made me laugh, like how Mrs. Fung gives up some concoctions to make him get better. Even Jackson’s friends are entertaining, like Rosa and Tane, and I adored Olivia.

Another reason why I enjoyed the story is that it indirectly educates the human body to the younger readers as well. For instance, when Goober explains the pathway of the auditory nerves and the nose hairs was entertaining as well as informative. We also learn that there are good bacteria vs. bad ones and new terms like “Engulf.” Moreover, I enjoyed the different words the author came up with, like phlegmray, Vomitor, Flufector, and Snotpocalypse!

The illustrations by Nahum Zierschare also excellent and give the story an adventurous look. The pictures are detailed and gorgeous and would make you stop reading to appreciate them. Overall, “Snotlings ” is a book that would keep middle graders entertained throughout!
