    All Pets Allowed Review:

The Bedazzling Branch family is back with our adorable heroine Becket as she deals with a new pet in her life.

What I like about this series is its feel-good aspect. It is refreshing to read a simple book about family values in farm life, and I like how the author captured them in the story. I enjoyed Becket in this book and felt she had become more mature from book one. It is always nice to see characters showing growth in the series. Becket seems to take on more responsibility as she starts caring for Dibs. More than that, I liked how protective she was of her brother when he finds a dead mouse and needs her help.

Moreover, the author also imparts lovely messages in the story about patience and persistence. Even though Dibs is challenging to manage, Becket never gives up trying her best to teach him and make him better. Yes, she does get down when she sees how Given is adapting quickly, but I loved how the author positively wrote her. Also, the author shows how strong a family can work together in a structured manner. On a side note, I also liked the concept of “weeding and needing.” The author also progresses the story nicely, where Becket gets a shock towards the end.

Similar to the previous book, the illustrations by LeUyen Pham are beautiful and blend with the storyline nicely. Overall, “All Pets Allowed” is a lovely addition to the “Blackberry Farm” series. I hope the author continues to write many more in the series.

The Becket List: A Blackberry Farm Story Review:

What an adorable middle-grade story “The Becket List” was, and a great start to the “Blackberry Farm” series.

Firstly, I would like to compliment the author for developing such a creative concept for a series. Most popular middle-grade books deal with fantasy, magic, or other subgenres. It is refreshing to see a middle-grade story revolve around a family adjusting to the farm life from the city.

I adored the way the author wrote Becket. She is so excited to move to Blackberry Farm but soon realizes that things don’t go the way she planned. On the other hand, her brother Nicholas adapts wonderfully. It was nice to see how the kids transition to their new lives and make friends. I enjoyed reading about all the members of the family. The author also adds humor when Becket has trouble with the farm animals. It was also interesting to see how their friends, the Fairs, reacted to farm life when they visited.

There are other reasons to appreciate this book too. For instance, the story has some heartfelt moments where Becket deals with a death in the family. The author also makes the chapters stand out by adding Becket’s checklist, which would catch the attention of a younger reader. Similarly, the illustrations by LeUyen Pham are adorable and blend with the story beautifully!

Overall, “The Becket List” is an adorable realistic fiction children’s book that would entertain young ones.

The Magic of Found Objects Review:

If you want to read a delightfully light-hearted story about friendship, love, and marriage, you need to read “The Magic of Found Objects.”

After a row of mysteries, thrillers, and fantasy novels, I found it refreshing to sit down and read this book. It’s a humorous, emotional, and sweet story about Phronsie, who decides to marry her best friend, Judd. The whole book is about Phronsie’s decision to go ahead with the wedding or not. As the story progresses, the author toggles between the past and the present, and we see how different events in Phronsie’s shapes her decision.

Phronsie is lovely in the lead, and I feel people who are not yet married and are looking for the right one would relate to her. We all have that moment in our lives where we wonder if we should wait for the right person or go ahead and marry for convenience. Phronsie is quirky, emotional, and gets conflicted over making the right decision. I liked her conversations with Tenaj and how she contemplates if what she is doing is right. This story is one of those where all the characters are simply charming, including Mr. Swanky.

Moreover (and I may be the odd one out here), but I adored Judd and Phronsie. Even though they might not be in love, the friendship and the camaraderie they share is so funny and beautiful. No matter what flaws Judd had, I adored him.

Overall, “The Magic of Found Objects” is a beautiful contemporary fiction that you can pick up if you are in the mood for light-hearted emotional drama.

The Witch Demands a Retraction Review:

“The Witch Demands a Retraction” is a hilarious collection of our classic Fairy Tales, spun for adults, and will make you change the perspective with them.

The creators did a fantastic job in this book, and I found myself laughing out loud at some of the scenarios. I admit, there were times when I used to read a fairy tale and laugh at some of the implausible situations the characters would find themselves in. For instance, wouldn’t Rapunzel’s head hurt when the prince put his weight on it to climb? The author takes all the classic fairy tales and spins them into adult situations. I found Snow White and Beauty and the Three Bears funny, and they were some of my favorites.

Moreover, the author keeps the book fresh and doesn’t use the same style of humor in every story. Each tale has a new style from the previous one. For instance, I loved the creativity behind the one where Cinderella’s Podiatrist writes an Amazon Review. Even Bluebeard and Rumpelstiltskin were unique in their way, and I admired the author’s storytelling style.

The illustrations by Ron Barrett are unique and give the book a quirky, charming look. I loved the details of some of the artwork and its textures and thought the images with Red Riding Hood and Bluebeard were the highlights. He illustrates the characters in a whimsical, childlike manner yet adds a touch of mischief to balance with the tale.

Overall, “The Witch Demands a Retraction: Fairy Tale Reboots for Adults” was definitely out of the norm from what I usually read. Still, it is nevertheless very entertaining and worth checking out!

What I Like About Me Review:

“What I Like About Me” is an adorable young adult contemporary romance that revolves around an average insecure girl whose life changes during the winter holidays.

To begin with, I enjoyed the author’s style of writing. Having read her other story, “You were made for me,” I knew I would enjoy this book, and I did! The author portrays a beautiful message of how you can feel good about your appearance no matter how you look.

Moreover, the author wrote all the characters charmingly. Once you get immersed in the story, you feel like you are part of Maisie’s family and friends. Maisie is an adorable protagonist. I loved the way the author wrote her insecurities. The author does a great job portraying her realistically, where she has low self-esteem about her weight and the lack of support she gets from her family. Also, I adored the friendship between Beamer and Maisie. It was one of the highlights of the story and made the story fun and heartwarming. On a side note, I also loved all the movie references between Maisie and Beamer.

What’s interesting is how Maisie experiences different emotions with various characters. She has a complex relationship with Anna, which tests their trust and friendship. Similarly, I also liked her scenes with Eva, even though they come up later in the story. There is also a side storyline with Maisie and her father, which added nicely to the storyline. Another character who I adored is Leila. She positively affects Maisie, and I loved how she encourages her to step out of her bubble.

Overall, “What I Like About Me” is a beautiful contemporary book that anyone feeling insecure about their appearance should read.

    Cheesemaker Durdsden Review:

Let’s face it! Kids love reading gross, disgusting things and find it funny. Hence, “Cheesemaker Durdsden” is a hilarious children’s book that will appeal to young readers, even if it makes the parents queasy.

The characters are adorable, and I adored Durdsden in the lead. The author makes him shine for his silliness and perseverance. He never loses hope and stays optimistic about fixing the solution and becoming better instead of being pulled down by his competitors.

Like the other’s other book, like “The Toot Fairy,” the author makes the story stand out with the deliciously gross sense of humor. He narrates the plot creatively and charmingly, making you wonder how the story will turn out. Moreover, the story is hilarious when the townspeople find out the reason for the delicious cheese. Some of the scenes are repugnant but told light-heartedly.

Furthermore, the critical element of any children’s book is the illustrations. The drawings by Dawn Davidson are gorgeous! I loved the naturistic landscape in the background, and each page had details that made me pause and appreciate. The artist also created the expressions of the townspeople so wonderful, where you smile when you see their shocked reactions. Even the creature is scary, yet cute, that wouldn’t scare the younger readers.

Overall, “Cheesemaker Durdsden” is a book that kids will enjoy. While I liked most of it, I admit some parts made me uneasy, especially when we learn how Durdsden manufactures the cheese.

To begin with, Every fairy gets to throw a coin into the magical well one day. And declare what kind of fairy job they want to have. Do they want to be a Rainbow fairy, in charge of making the shining colors after it rains? Or a Dream Fairy, to bring children sweet dreams while they sleep? There are so many important jobs to choose from!

Jessa had always planned to say “tooth” when she threw her coin in the well. But when the day finally comes, she accidentally says “toot!” .Now, instead of leaving coins for the teeth children have lost, she’ll have to collect toots from all the butts in the world.  And she’s not too pleased about it. But her mentor, Poombus the Pungent, is here to tell Jessa all about the job. And also about how even the most unexpected turn of events can turn out to be fun and rewarding!

    The Toot Fairy Review:

“The Toot Fairy” is a hilarious, silly picture book that is light-hearted and will make you smile. I loved the humor of the story and thought the author did a creative job with the tale. It is gross and absurd, but something that everyone can relate to because everyone does it. Moreover, the author leaves a good message in the end, that you can find love in whatever you do, as long as you have a positive mindset.

Equally important, both the characters are adorable. I liked Jess for not throwing a tantrum as she didn’t get what she wanted. Even Poobums the pungent is hilarious. Also, The illustrations by Dawn Davidson are beautiful, colorful, and hilarious. What’s interesting is how the colors contrast between the first half and second half. In the first half, the illustrator fills the story with bright colors or flowers and rainbows, where Jess thinks she would become a tooth fairy. Yet, in the second half, the colors are darker and gross when she becomes a ‘Toot’ Fairy instead. I also loved how shocked the other fairies look in Fairyland when they find out about Jess’s new vocation.

However, the ending is a bit silly with the coins, which the author could have changed. Getting coins for leaving a tooth under the pillow is something lots of children know. However, dropping cash in someone’s pants after a toot sounded unbelievable, even for a fantasy.

Nevertheless, “The Toot Fairy” is an adorable children’s picture book that children can read for humor. The book will surely make them laugh with the fun illustrations.

    Awesome Dog 5000 Review:

What a fun story this book of “Awesome Dog 5000” was. Although I have not read the previous books in the series, I enjoyed reading this one. Although I wish I had read the first two beforehand to learn of Awesome Dog’s origins.

Firstly, kudos to the author for writing the book so creatively. I loved the instruction manual he sets up for new readers vs. returning readers on which page to start reading. He also warns younger readers when the plot might become too scary towards the climax, with a cute photo of a cat. Moreover, he narrates the story in an adorable way that makes you want to fight with the characters.

Speaking of characters, I enjoyed all of them. But, as the book focuses primarily on Ralph, I enjoyed his storyline more than others. It was interesting to see how Marty and Skylar boost his spirits when he feels inferior to them in certain areas. I also loved Tina as the villain. She is crazy, unpredictable, but very entertaining. It was interesting to see what she does as a supervillain, just because she is a fan of superheroes. I thought she was one of the most creative villains I have read in the genre recently.

Similarly, the illustrations are quirky and charming that complements the plot very nicely. I also liked how the author set up clues for the next book and includes fun trivia along the way. The book is very entertaining and would be a hit amongst younger readers. However, I would recommend reading the series from the first book before picking up this one.

Overall, “Awesome Dog 5000 vs. the Kitty-Cat Cyber Squad” is a great adventure tale that will entertain middle graders.

From New York Times, bestselling author Gordon Korman comes a hilarious middle-grade novel about a group of kids forced to “unplug” at a wellness camp. Instead, they find intrigue, adventure, and a whole lot of chaos. Perfect for fans of Korman’s The Untouchables and Masterminds series, as well as Carl Hiaasen’s eco mysteries.

As the son of the world’s most famous tech billionaire, spoiled Jett Baranov has always gotten all his wishes. So when his father’s private jet drops him in the middle of a place called the Oasis, Jett can’t believe it. He has no choice but to hand over his cell phone and eat grainy veggie patties. He also participates in wholesome activities with the other kids he has absolutely no interest in hanging out with.

As the weeks go on, Jett starts to get used to the unplugged life. He even bonds with the other kids over their discovery of a baby-lizard-turned-pet, Needles. But he can’t help noticing that the adults at the Oasis are acting really strange. Could it be all those suspicious “meditation” sessions?

Jetthowever has the determination to get to the bottom of things. But can he convince the other kids that he is no longer just a spoiled brat making trouble?

    About the Author:

Gordon Korman published his first book at age fourteen and has written more than ninety middle grade and teen novels.

Favorites include the New York Times bestselling UngiftedSupergiftedThe UnteachablePopSchooled, and the Masterminds series.

    Unplugged Review:

I enjoyed setting “Unplugged,” where the kids of different personalities have to spend time in an isolated camp.

There is never a dull moment with a large cast on the canvas. The author keeps the writing fresh by changing the perspective of the characters as the story progresses. Frankly, I loved Jett. I loved his transition from being a spoiled rich kid to someone who starts to care. There are some moments that I laughed out loud. For instance, the way he purchases the fireworks and tells Tyrell about it. Speaking of which, Tyrell and Brooklynne were memorable, too, with Sarah and Magnus’s own storylines. Even Needles is adorable! However, I could not stand Grace. She was annoying throughout the story and came off as though she was better than everyone.

Apart from the characters, the author also spins the tale creatively. When I started reading this story, I never thought it would contain hypnosis, alligator farms, a mysterious person in a mansion, and candy blackmails. I particularly enjoyed the hypnosis angle and how Jett tangles himself in it. The storyline is zany and unpredictable, yet it works very nicely and brings the characters closer.

Overall, “Unplugged” is a light-hearted, fun middle-grade novel, perfect for a summer read.

Hilarious, bold, sparky, and surprising, this is the funniest feminist book you’ll read all year.

Alex is a rebel from the tip of her purple fauxhawk to the toes of her biker boots. She’s tried everything she can think of to get expelled from her strict Catholic boarding school. Nothing has worked so far – but now, Alex has a new plan.

Tired of the sexism she sees in every corner of St Mary’s, Alex decides to stage the school’s first-ever production of The Vagina Monologues. Which is going to be a challenge, as no one else at St Mary’s can even bear to say the word ‘vagina’ out loud . . .

    About the Author:

Flynn Meaney is the author of The Boy Recession and Bloodthirsty. She studied marketing and French at the University of Notre Dame. She barely survived the terrifying array of priests and nuns, campus ghosts, and bone-crushing athletes who inspired Bad Habits. Since completing a very practical MFA in Poetry, she works for a French company and often travels between New York (when she’s in the mood for bagels) and Paris (when she’s in the mood for croissants). –This text refers to the paperback edition.

    Bad Habits Review:

I loved stories that make me laugh, and “Bad Habits” had me rolling with its light-hearted humor.

Firstly, I loved how complex the author wrote the characters. Although the plot is light-hearted, you see various changes that some of the characters go through. Alex is fantastic as the main character. She is crass, witty, and awkward, but SO entertaining! I loved how she takes charge and does things impulsively, even if it would lead her into trouble.

Similarly, I loved Mary Kate too! It was beautiful to see the character change and become brave (but a part of me still missed her old charm). Moreover, none of the characters are black and white, and you don’t know how they would react to certain situations. For instance, Katie Casey, who plays a negative role, surprised me in the scenes where she shares a moment with Alex. I loved these moments!

Secondly, I loved the author’s style of writing. I don’t think I have laughed out so much as I did while reading this book. Many moments had me laughing in tears, like Mary Kate’s date with Theology John or their meetings at the Feminist club. Moreover, nearly all of Alex’s dialogues had a touch of humor. The author also wrote the romance between Alex and Pat in a fun manner. One of my favorite scenes is when he shows her the tunnels.

However, probably the only minor criticism I have is how the story ended. I felt the plot concluded abruptly, as I wanted details over what happened with the play. Apart from that, “Bad Habits” is a hilarious, contemporary Young Adult novel that I recommend to anyone who is in the mood to laugh out loud.
