Miss Peregrine meets The Graveyard Book in this middle grade adventure about rival siblings running a monster mortuary—written by bestselling author Chuck Wendig.

Thirteen-year-old Molly doesn’t know how she got the short end of the stick. She had a neglectful father for upbringing —while Dustin, the older brother she’s never met, got their mother and the keys to the family estate. But now the siblings have both become orphans. And  she’s come home for her inheritance. If  Dustin won’t welcome her into the family business, then she’ll happily take her half in cash.

There’s just one problem: the family business is a mortuary for monsters, and Molly’s not sure she’s ready to deal with mysterious doors, talking wolves, a rogue devourer of magic, and a secret cemetery. It’s going to take all of Dustin’s stuffy supernatural knowledge and Molly’s most heroic cosplay (plus a little help from non-human friends) for the siblings to figure it out and save the day… if only they can get along for five minutes.

Bestselling author Chuck Wendig’s middle grade debut is equal parts spooky, funny, and heartfelt—perfect for Halloween and year-round reading!

    Dust & Grim Review:

Holy Ghosts! “Dust & Grim” is a fantastic story of creepy houses, wandering ghosts, vampires, cemeteries, secrets, and more! Once I started reading this book, I would not put it down.

Everything about the tale was just brilliant! From the get-go, we feel like we are beside Molly as she spends time with Dustin and Vivacia. What follows is a plot filled with gripping twists and turns that will engage a reader of any age. There were so many highlights to the tale, as Molly explores the house and hears the walls whisper or meets a ghost when she goes to the woods and meets a spirit. I had NO idea whatsoever in which direction the story would go.

Molly was excellent in the lead. I loved her snarky sense of humor and how she gave the story a light touch that would not scare the younger readers too much. I loved her relationship with Dustin and how she got ahold of him. While the two don’t start on the best note, I loved how the author matured their relationship. The author intrigued me as to what secrets Dustin and Vivacia were holding. Even Uncle Gordo was adorable, even though he only made a brief appearance.

Similarly, the illustrations by Jensine Eckwall also complement each chapter beautifully. As I read the advanced copy of this book, not all the pictures were present. However, I cannot wait to see how the finished illustrations would appear. We also meet new characters like Dave and Marsha and Dregil and Lac, who gave me goosebumps as the story progresses. The author leads the tale to a gripping climax that’s so satisfying.

Overall, I loved everything about “Dust & Grim” and hope there is a sequel to revisit these characters.

In the debut middle grade novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Gayle Forman comes a poignant and powerful coming-of-age story that follows a young girl and her new friend as they learn about family, friendship, allyship, and finding your way in a complicated world.

It’s the summer of 1987, and all ten-year-old Bug wants to do is go to the beach with her older brother and hang out with the locals on the boardwalk. But Danny wants to be with his own friends, and Bug’s mom is too busy, so Bug is stuck with their neighbor Philip’s nephew, Frankie.

Bug’s not too excited about hanging out with a kid she’s never met, but they soon find some common ground. And as the summer unfolds, they find themselves learning some important lessons about each other, and the world.

Like what it means to be your true self and how to be a good ally for others. That family can be the people you’re related to, but also the people you choose to have around you. And that even though life isn’t always fair, we can all do our part to make it more just.

    About the Author:

Gayle Forman is an award-winning author and journalist whose articles have appeared in numerous publications, including SeventeenCosmopolitan, and Elle in the US. Gayle Forman’s novel, If I Stay, was released as a blockbuster movie starring Chloë Grace Moretz in 2014.

    Frankie & Bug Review:

“Frankie & Bug” was super cute! It’s the perfect blend of middle-grade elements, mystery, and family dynamics.

The highlight of the story is in the main characters, Bug, Frankie, and even Danny. Our main character, Bug, is adorable in the lead. The author wrote Bug wonderfully and realistically, and you immediately feel like you understand her feelings. Similarly, the author portrayed the sibling relationship between Bug and Danny so well. As Danny grows up, he spends time away from Bug, and Bug hates him for distancing himself from her. It was interesting to see if and how they would patch up.

At the same time, I liked how Bug got paired with Frankie and thought they made a perfect team. Similarly, I adored Frankie and his determination to find who the Midnight Marauder is. Frankie also has flaws, but as the story progresses, you see how Bug also helps him in ways. Speaking of which, the author also wrote the mystery of the Midnight Marauder creatively. Even I wondered who it could be as I continued to read the story when Frankie and Bug target the Hermit.

What’s charming about the story is also the small stories that we get on the side. For instance, the author glued me to the pages during Phillip’s incident and how Bug finds out more about her family. There are also moments where the author makes the side characters like Hedvig’s story of Disneyland stand out. The author paces the story lovely and adds a touch of humor in Bug’s dialogues, like how her output of the lemonade stand was busy. In general, there are many reasons to appreciate this book.

Overall, I enjoyed reading “Frankie & Bug” and found it a charming middle-grade novel.

Two sisters become trapped in the underworld and in the scheme of deities, shapeshifters, and ghouls–in this lush and dangerous Phoenician mythology-inspired fantasy.

Sixteen-year-old sisters Samira and Rima aren’t exactly living the dream. Instead, they live with their maddeningly unreliable mother in a rundown trailer in Michigan. Dad’s dead, money’s tight, and Mom disappears for days at a time. So when Sam’s grandfather wills her the family valuables–a cache of Lebanese antiquities–she’s desperate enough to try pawning them before Mom can.

But she shouldn’t. Because one is cursed, forbidden, the burial coin of a forgotten god. Disturbing it condemns her and Rima to the Phoenician underworld, a place of wicked cities, burning cedar forests, poisoned feasts of milk and lemons, and an endless, windless ocean.

Nothing is what it seems. No one is who they say. And down here, the night never ends.

To get home–and keep her sister safe–Sam will have to outwit beautiful shapeshifters, pose as a royal bride, sail the darkest sea… and maybe kill the god of death himself.

    Vial of Tears Review:

“Vial of Tears” is a fantastic middle-grade adventure mythological fantasy filled with Lebanese culture that also takes you to the Underworld, and I could not put it down.

I loved everything about this story from the get-go. The author tells the story so grippingly that something thrilling happens in nearly every chapter. Some fantastic scenes just stood out and etched in my mind. For instance, I loved Sam’s part with the women in the tent, skeptical to know her future. My second favorite was when she gets a sense of Deja Vu when she sees the picture before the guards chase her. Another unforgettable moment was when Sam swims and sees a shadow circling beneath her.

Similarly, world-building is also incredible. The Underworld is a place where nothing is what it seems, and it was fascinating to see what was real and what wasn’t. The story impressed me because the author has the underlying current of love and family throughout the book. For instance, my heart went out to Sam and Rima when they thought they saw their father. The author also adds unique fantasy elements like Shapeshifters and magical artifacts to the story, giving it a special touch.

The characters are also lovely. I loved Sam in the lead as she coped with what happened to her father and her mother’s disappearance. Even the supporting characters like Eshmun, Teth, and Meem added nicely. I also adored the middle-eastern terms I got to know, like the “Baalbek” and “Ruha.” The author perfectly executed everything about the story, from the characters, plot, and mythology aspects.

Overall, I loved “Vial of Tears” and found it one of the best middle-grade adventure mythology books I have read this year.

Only If You Dare: 13 Stories of Darkness and Doom  Review:

I love how “Only If You Dare” has various oddities to hold your interest and scare you. I enjoyed reading most of the tales and found the collection to be impressive.

The Substitute – What a great start to the book! I loved Hazel, and Mr. Fernsby was disturbing as he picked on Ava.
The Perfect Girl – is a lovely story, and Celeste stands out as the strange girl, but the ending felt weird.
Lumpy, Lumpy – This story was more disgusting than eerie.
Hi, Jenny – I liked this one because it is something that could happen in reality. Also, buzz buzz is creepy!
Crazy Playz – I liked this story mainly cos of Jayson. He is hilarious.
The Snowman Who Wouldn’t Melt – The Snowman gave me the shivers and made me reminisce about an old Fear Street novel by RL Stine with the same name.

Scrabbled: The plot between Ramona and the Specter was the highlight of the tale. I also liked how the author incorporated a game of scrabble in it.
My Hand, Right There: The main character is creepy and unnerved me about his hand carving obsession
Wake up: Poor luna! This one gave me “IT” vibes because of the sinister jester and Luna’s recurring nightmare.
We all Scream for Ice Cream: This story was too short for me to get scared. While like I concept, the ending felt incomplete.
One of a Kind: This one was probably the most disturbing because of my fear of spiders.
One More Piece: Oh, spooky dolls! This one was an exciting tale.
The Heartbeat you Hear is a nice ending that will make you focus on your Heartbeat.

Overall, “Only If You Dare” is an exciting collection of spooky stories perfect for Halloween.

    Greta Grace Review:

Greta Grace is a beautiful middle-grade realistic fiction about a girl who faces betrayal and gets bullied for being unique, and it was a lovely read.

I loved the concept of the tale. Being someone who got bullied in school, I could relate to what Greta goes through. The author portrayed Greta nicely, and you want things to be better for her. She goes through a lot with Casey, Samantha, Charlie, and Mrs. Mcgee. I liked the way the author handled the case surrounding bullies, leaving a good message.

Similarly, the author also makes the supporting characters entertaining where you feel strongly towards them. Some memorable parts were when Samatha shoes the photo she took at the party to Greta or when Greta sees Mrs. McGee. I loved Mrs. McGee and the bond she shared with Greta. On a side note, I also adored how the author promotes yoga, and practicing it would uplift anyone. Even the side story between Mikey and Ashley was sweet. At the same time, you dislike Casey with a passion for the way she bullies everyone.

However, my only criticism of the tale is how it seemed to stretch in the second half. I thought the story would be over once the situation with Casey got over. However, the author continues the book and starts another storyline revolving around Courtney, which I found disconnected from the story’s theme. It will have been nice if they release this part as a second book in the series.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading “Greta Grace” because of the characters and their drama in school. I look forward to seeing how the series continues.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, Anna, Edmund, and William are evacuated from London to live in the countryside, bouncing from home to home in search of a permanent family.

It is 1940 and Anna, 9, Edmund, 11, and William, 12, have just lost their grandmother. Unfortunately, she left no provision for their guardianship in her will. Her solicitor comes up with a preposterous plan. He will arrange for the children to join  the evacuation of a group of schoolchildren  to a village in the country. There they will live with families for the duration of the war. He also hopes that whoever takes the children on might end up willing to adopt them and become their new family–providing, of course, that the children can agree on the choice.

Moving from one family to another, the children suffer the cruel trickery of foster brothers, the cold realities of outdoor toilets, and the hollowness of empty tummies. They seek comfort in the village lending library, whose kind librarian, Nora Muller, seems an excellent candidate–except that she has a German husband whose whereabouts are currently unknown. Nevertheless, Nora’s cottage is a place of bedtime stories and fireplaces, of vegetable gardens and hot, milky tea. Most important, it’s a place where someone thinks they all three hung the moon. Which is really all you need in a mom, if you think about it.

Fans of The War That Saved My Life and other World War II fiction will find an instant classic in A Place to Hang the Moon.

    About the Author:

Kate Albus writes historical fiction for young people. She loves getting to know new characters, both by writing and reading about them. Kate grew up in New York and now lives with her family in rural Maryland. Other than writing, she loves baking, reading, knitting, and other activities that are inherently quiet.

A PLACE TO HANG THE MOON is her debut novel. Set in England during the early days of World War II, it’s the story of three orphaned siblings who hope the wartime evacuation of London will be their chance at a forever home. The story was inspired by Kate’s lifelong fascination with the WWII evacuations. Appropriately enough, she first learned of these historical events in a story… C.S. Lewis’ THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE.

A Place to Hang the Moon Review:

There are specific stories you read that make you immediately become fond of them. I loved reading “A Place to Hang the Moon” and thought the author did a fabulous job executing the tale.

Firstly, I adored all the three characters from the first page. Edmund, William, and Anna all have likable traits that make them stand out. I loved how close they were to each other. The three of them endure few hardships and learn the ways of the world. William was my favorite because of how he took over the responsibility. He wanted to manage everything with the three of them to not feel in debt with anyone. I loved how the author progressed with the characters in that there is never any harm in asking for help when required. You feel protective towards the children, especially when they encounter meanies like Jack and Simon and even the Griffiths. On a side note, I loved how the children have a fondness for books and loved the various references and selections the author put in on their conversations.

I also cherished the children’s bond with Mrs. Müller, and their scenes together were the highlights. Another reason that I applaud the author is for using the backdrop of WWII for the plot. You get to see how the situation impacts the evacuees and the harsh realities that the children have to endure. The author also added complex terms like capitulation that would encourage younger readers to enhance their vocabulary. The author beautifully paces the story in a heartwarming manner as the children search for the perfect place they can call home.

Overall, “A Place to Hang the Moon” is a gorgeous historical middle-grade novel that I feel proud of reading.

What if a school club changed your life forever?

In the second week of seventh grade, Jason Sloan signs up for the brand-new HAIR Club. He and his friends have no idea what it’s about, but since they’re the first to sign up they figure they’ll be in charge in no time. The club turns out to be super weird: using fancy new equipment donated by a mysterious benefactor, the members are supposed to monitor school security footage. Their first assignment: find out what is stealing the cafeteria’s croutons.

Instead of the expected dark cafeteria, the computers show the club members something else entirely: actual footage of themselves as high school seniors, five years in the future! What on earth could be happening? Is it some kind of time warp, or alternate reality? Or is it just an un-funny prank? As they scramble to solve the mystery, they can’t help but notice something else—none of them like what they see five years from now. Is there any way to change the future—and their fates?

    Welcome to Dweeb Club Review:

“Welcome to Dweeb Club” was an excellent middle-grade adventure book that made me glued to the pages.

Let me preface by saying that I jumped into the story without reading the synopsis. I love reading middle-grade literature, and the title sounded like a humorous tale, so I started reading it. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that the book has much more going on than your usual middle school club activities. There is action, drama, adventure, and even orders on science fiction and alternate realities. I loved how the author incorporated all these elements into this story with a touch of humor, where even I didn’t know how the story would progress.

The story picked up once they started seeing the Midnight Recordings and started investigating what was happening. I also enjoyed the storyline surrounding the Crouton Crook. One memorable moment in the tale is when they are all in the cafeteria and come across the culprit and wonder what to do.

All the characters in the club are also charming. I liked Jason in the lead and how he interacted with the group. What’s nice is also how the author included Jason’s Uncle Luke and Aunt Shannon in the storyline because I enjoyed both the characters. Even Alice, as annoying as she could be at times, was humorous. Even Steve, Vincent, Lara, Andrew, Nikhil, and Hoppy were fun.

The author also processes the tale nicely that leads to an exciting climax. What’s nice about the science fiction angle is how it makes us wonder what our future selves would be if we changed action in our present.

Overall, “Welcome to Dweeb Club” is a fabulous start to the series, and I look forward to revisiting the characters.

“The path ahead isn’t easy. It will be filled with darkness and despair, and you will almost certainly regret your decision, just as I regret mine.”
    ~Narrator, The Wolf’s Curse

Twelve-year-old Gauge’s life has been cursed since the day he witnessed a Great White Wolf steal his grandpapá’s soul, preventing it from reaching the Sea-in-the-Sky and sailing into eternity. When the superstitious residents of Bouge-by-the-Sea accuse the boy of crying wolf, he joins forces with another orphan to prove his innocence. They navigate their shared grief in a journey that ultimately reveals life-changing truths about the wolf––and death. Narrated in a voice reminiscent of The Book Thief and Lemony Snicket, this fast-paced adventure is perfect for fans of literary fiction fantasy such as A Wish in the Dark and The Girl Who Drank the Moon.

    The Wolf’s Curse Review:

Stewards, Blacksmiths, and Healers, oh my. Reading “The Wolf’s Curse” was a delight!

Firstly, I commend the author for the beautiful world-building. When you read this story, you feel the backdrop comprises hard-working people who make a living with a designated job. But the author fills the world with magic and wonder as our protagonist Gauge has to go on a journey. The author adds concepts like the Sea in the Sky and the shells as currency beautifully and gives the tale a unique touch.

Moreover, the author paces the story wonderfully, focusing equally on the plot and the character’s emotions. I liked Gauge from the get-go. He shares a beautiful relationship with his Grandpapa, and I was keen to read about his journey in the tale. He goes through many emotions from grief, loss, fear to hope, and I thought the author progressed Gauge beautifully. I also adored Roux and her friendship with Gauge. Right from the time they meet, Roux stands by his side. Some exciting moments between them were when they met the guards or tried to figure out the Voyant.

I also loved how the author voiced the Wolf. The Wolf tells most of the story from his perspective, and I loved how personal he got with the narration, including his own opinions. There are so many moments that stood out for me, like when Gauge needs to find the feathers of his grandpa’s release and overhears Mayor Voyant announce the arrest. I also liked Mistress Charbonneaux, the Steward, Ruben the vessel maker, and Nicoline the Healer. This book was impressive for a debut novel.

Overall, I enjoyed “The Wolf’s Curse” and thought it was an enchanting middle-grade fantasy novel.

In a modern mega-city built around dragons, one boy gets caught up in the world of underground dragon battles and a high-stakes gang war that could tear his family apart.

Once, dragons nearly drove themselves to extinction. But in the city of Drakopolis, humans domesticated them centuries ago. Now dragons haul the city’s cargo, taxi its bustling people between skyscrapers, and advertise its wares in bright, neon displays. Most famously of all, the dragons battle. Turns out, his big sister is a dragon thief! Too bad his older brother is a rising star in Drakopolis law enforcement…

To protect his friends and his family, Abel must partner with the stolen beast, riding in kin battles and keeping more secrets than a dragon has scales.

BATTLE DRAGONS #1: CITY OF THIEVES Review:

Battle Dragons City of thieves is an exciting middle-grade novel with action and adventure, and I enjoyed reading it.

Firstly, I loved the magical world the author created. As soon as I started reading the story, I got transported into the world of dragons and wyverns. I loved the concept of Sky Knights, Red Talons, NERDS, and Thunder Wings. The author also tells the tell excitedly where something thrilling happens almost in every chapter. From the kinners searching for Lina to when they meet the Sunrise Reaper at the warehouse, there is never a dull moment in the tale. I particularly loved the scenes with the Widowmaker and the dragons. On a side note, I also loved the concept of OODA and decided to implement the saying in my daily life. The author also inserts complex words for younger readers to learn throughout the story, like pheromones and nonplussed, and executes it creatively.

Secondly, I liked the way the author portrayed Abel. You see Abel grow as a confident character as the story progresses. I enjoyed his interactions with his siblings Lina and Silas and the complex relationship they shared. Abel also shares a beautiful friendship with ROA, and I loved their scenes together. Let’s not forget the incredible moments he has had with Karak.

I also found Instructor Ally to be hilarious. What’s nice is how the characters also grow, and I liked how Ally’s relationship with Abel changed over the training. Even other casts like Topher, Shivonne, and Olus and were memorable. Similarly, even Fitz and Sax added well and spiced up the tale.

Overall, I enjoyed reading “City of Thieves” and thought it was an exciting start to the series.

    The Raven Heir Review:

“The Raven Heir” is a beautiful start to “The Raven Crown” series, and I enjoyed it mainly because of Cordelia.

Initially, when I started reading this book, I didn’t know what to expect. I loved the Rapunzel vibes from initially reading about Cordelia (well, except that she has magical powers). Cordelia is a fascinating character, and I loved how unique the author made her. She can change into any wild animal, and I liked how the author describes her reactions, like transforming into a horse.

The author fills the story with action and adventure right from the first page. I feel the story has the perfect example of how a middle-grade fantasy adventure should be. We also get a magical world with forests, mountains, and kingdoms, with characters of special powers that make the story gripping. Some scenes shocked me, like what the grandmother does with the drink or fighting the soldiers. The author also adds shocking twists and turns, and we learn more about Cordy’s past. Lady Elianora is a formidable villain in the story, and I enjoyed how the author progressed the storyline.

Another reason why I liked his story is how the author portrayed the importance of family. The author also describes the relationship between the siblings realistically, where they bicker and make up as we would. Rosalind and Giles share a close bond with Cordy, as well as Connall. I felt all the characters brought something new to the story to make it memorable.

Overall, “The Raven Heir ” is a breathtaking middle-grade fantasy adventure with magic, and I enjoyed reading it a lot.
