“I speak of magic, Mr. Holmes.”

Mr. Percy Simmons, leader of London’s Theosophical Order of Odic Forces, is fully aware that his is not a case which Mr. Sherlock Holmes would ordinarily take up.

These are not ordinary times, however.

For something, some unquiet demon within Holmes stirs into discomfiting wakefulness under the occultist’s words. The unassuming Mr. Simmons has spoken of good and evil with the sort of certainty of soul that Sherlock yearns for. A certainty which has eluded Holmes for the three years in which the world thought him dead. While, for all intents, constructions, and purposes, he was dead.

But six months ago, Sherlock Holmes returned to Baker Street, declared himself alive to friend and foe alike, took up his old rooms, his profession, and his partnership with Dr. J. Watson—only to find himself haunted still by questions which had followed him out of the dreadful chasm of Reichenbach Falls:

Why? Why had he survived when his enemy had not? To what end? And had there ever, truly, been such a thing as justice? Such a thing as good or evil?

Sherlock Holmes & the Silver Cord Review:

It’s been a while since I read the Sherlock Holmes novels, but I liked how the author took the elements from the original books and continued the story with the same tones as the classics. This book starts with the blackmail case brought forth by Mrs. Margaret Jones. As the plot thickens, we get introduced to characters like Mr. Percy Simmons, a member of the enigmatic Theosophical Order of Odic Forces, who enters the scene, seeking Holmes’ aid to find his friend, Mr. Winter, who has fallen victim to an insidious attack involving magic. The story is intriguing because the plot feels mystical, and you don’t know what will happen.

I loved how the author captured Holmes’ emotional turmoil. The story artfully explores Holmes’ inner struggle with cynicism and the allure of the mystical, delving into profound questions about justice, crime, and evil. As the investigation unfolds, Holmes and Watson get entangled in a web of deceit and manipulation. The author introduces more characters, making me suspect a few of them. The narrative kept me on the edge with mesmerizing revelations and unexpected twists, leading to a thrilling climax. The ending surprised me as I did not anticipate the closure of the book as how the author wrote it.

Another highlight is the bond between Holmes and Watson. Throughout the pages, the camaraderie between Holmes and Watson remains a constant, providing moments of warmth and familiarity amid the gripping suspense. The author skillfully blends casual and professional tones, immersing the readers in the duo’s world with vivid descriptions and intriguing dialogues.

Overall, “Sherlock Holmes & the Silver Cord” captures the essence of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works, taking Holmes and Watson on a fascinating adventure that challenges their perceptions and redefines the boundaries of their beliefs.

    Lamb of God Review:

There are several aspects of this book that I genuinely appreciate. Firstly, I liked our leading quartet of characters: Darren, Mikko, Helen, and Thomas. Thomas brought a fresh dynamic to Darren’s life, and the unexpected romantic angle between them added an intriguing element that I hadn’t expected from the previous books. I also enjoyed Colette and her complex friendship with Darren, alongside her work alongside McGregor. The author did a commendable job of deepening the characters and making them more relatable, allowing me to connect with them deeper in this book.

Moreover, the plot was also suspenseful, and the mystery surrounding the Wild Woman captivated me. The author skillfully incorporated some macabre moments, like the unsettling discovery in the woods. Among my favorite moments were the incident at the construction site in the park and the captivating discussions about secret societies.

Speaking of which, I found the philosophical and theological viewpoints expressed by the characters regarding sacrifice, self-loathing, and the influence of social media and internet personalities as modern anchorites fascinating. The introduction of the enigmatic character Angelo Zotti added an extra layer of intrigue, especially in his conversations with Helen about different perspectives on spirituality.

However, having read the series in order from the beginning, this book takes a departure from the high-adrenaline trilogy that preceded it. The author veered away from supernatural murders, and this book felt more like a toned-down murder mystery. I’ll admit that I missed the thrilling moments and the multiple murder whodunits that were prominent in the previous books.

Nevertheless, “Lamb of God” proved to be a solid addition to the series overall. It maintained its appeal and left me eager to continue with the next installment if the author continues it.

    Sound Review:

What sets this series apart is the wealth of knowledge that the author imparts through the protagonists’ research. In each book, you learn something new, and I learned about various subjects like misophonia, stigmatophilia, apophenia, and Vibroacoustic Disorder, to name a few. The author seamlessly weaves this information into the narrative, making it educational and engaging.

Moreover, the author skillfully incorporates new writing techniques, and in this book, I enjoyed the details of the medical examination of bodies. While some of the murder scenes are pretty gruesome, they effectively contribute to the story’s overall atmosphere. There are several memorable moments, such as the haunting sounds from the tunnel and the intriguing visit to the bookstore by Mikko and Helen.

Regarding the ploy, the author adeptly incorporates events from the previous books, creating a sense of continuity. Familiar characters like Lacey, Dave, Stuart, Justine, Thomas, and Shawn Forrest appear, and their story arcs develop nicely. The return of Mikko, who was missed in the second book, adds another layer of excitement. I liked the dynamics between Mikko, Helen, and Darren as they tackled a new investigation involving sounds. Additionally, the complex relationship between Darren and McGregor adds an exciting dynamic to the case.

However, I felt the story suffered from having too much happening simultaneously. With multiple story arcs, religious themes, investigations, and an expanding cast of characters, it was, at times, challenging to keep track of everyone’s roles and actions. While the climax offers satisfying resolutions to some of these elements, there are still open-ended aspects that leave you wanting more.

Despite this minor drawback, I enjoy this series greatly, and “Sound” proves to be a worthy addition. I’m curious to see how the story will progress in future installments.

    Consuming Fire Review:

Oh my goodness! This book surpassed my expectations compared to the first one. Firstly, I really enjoyed the author’s decision to focus more on Darren’s character while keeping Helen in the background. Darren’s progression in investigating the cases of spontaneous combustion and unraveling the mysteries was captivating. That being said, I still appreciated Helen’s presence and her bond with Darren. In this book, she comes across as stronger and more independent than before.

Moreover, the author skillfully crafts the plot in a thrilling manner, leaving readers guessing whether the incidents are the work of a person or if there is a supernatural element involved. The introduction of a suspicious family adds to the suspense, and as the murder count rises toward the end, even we, as readers, start to question what is truly happening.

Similar to the first book, this one also delves into intriguing concepts such as witch burning, paganism, healing, and darker themes like the backstory of Sepharvites and Adramelech, which I found fascinating. Each chapter’s ending with an excerpt from the book Helen discovers adds an eerie touch to the overall story.

And let’s not forget the conclusion! The author leaves us on a cliffhanger, leaving us eager to pick up the next book and find out what unfolds next. There were many memorable moments, including Darren and Helen’s investigation trip to Geneva, the incident during the football match, and even more minor occurrences like a bird crashing into Helen’s lecture.

All in all, “Consuming Fire” exceeded my expectations compared to the first book, and I’m eagerly anticipating getting my hands on the next installment to continue this gripping series.

Are you one of the elect?

Dr. Helen Hope is a lecturer in eschatology – the study of death, judgement, and the destiny of humankind. She is also a Calvinist nun, her life devoted to atoning for a secret crime.

When a body is found crucified on a Liverpool beach, she forms an unlikely alliance with suspect Mikko Kristensen, lead guitarist in death metal band Total Depravity. Together, they go on the trail of a rogue geneticist who they believe holds the key – not just to the murder, but to something much darker.

Also on the trail is cynical Scouse detective Darren Swift. In his first murder case, he must confront his own lack of faith as a series of horrific crimes drag the city of two cathedrals to the gates of hell.

Science meets religious belief in this gripping murder mystery

    Reprobation Review:

This book offers a lot to appreciate. It introduced me to eschatology, Calvinism, and various theological ideals I hadn’t been familiar with before. The author skillfully weaves in themes of immortality, gene mutation, and other philosophical topics that really make you contemplate the higher purpose of life and the afterlife, which was the standout aspect of the story. Moreover, I enjoyed the integration of these elements into a crime fiction thriller, with both Helen and Mikko investigating from their perspective while Detectives Swift and Quinn are officially on the case, and I thought the author narrated it well from various perspectives.

Personally, I particularly enjoyed how the author portrayed Helen’s conflicting feelings and her transformation once she met Mikko. Memorable moments include their interactions on the airplane and when Margaret reprimands Helen, as I was curious to see how Helen would respond. The author also adds suspenseful moments to the thriller aspect, such as Arran and Hayley noticing something strange in the church or the incident with the man and his laptop. The story is different, polished, and sophisticated, making you feel like you are reading something profound.

However, the climax was a bit of a downside. While it was thrilling, it felt somewhat disconnected from the events leading up to it in terms of the responsible party.

Apart from that, I found “Reprobation” to be an enjoyable read and a solid start to the series. I cannot wait to revisit Helen in the next book and find out what is in store for her.

    Cairo. December 1917.

Following a tip-off from notorious spy Fredrick Fredricks, Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane of British Intelligence find themselves in the hustle and bustle of Egypt. But ancient mummies aren’t the only bodies buried in the tombs of Cairo.

When a young French archeologist is found dead in a tomb in the desert with his head bashed in, and an undercover British agent goes missing, the threat moves closer to home.

As they dig deeper, soon Fiona and Kitty uncover a treasure trove of suspects, including competing excavators, jealous husbands, secret lovers, and belligerent spies! Fiona wonders if the notorious Fredrick Fredricks could be behind the murders? Or is the plot even more sinister?

One thing is clear – If Fiona and Kitty can’t catch the killer, they might end up sharing a sarcophagus with Nefertiti.

With humor as dry as the Arabian desert, and pacing as fast as a spitting camel, Fiona and Kitty are back in another sparkling adventure, this time in WW1 Egypt.

    Covert in Cairo Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Chaos At Carnegie Hall” and eagerly anticipated this latest book in the series, as I have a particular fondness for mysteries set in ancient Egypt.

To begin with, the author skillfully paints a vivid backdrop of Egypt, encompassing its mesmerizing sites and cuisines. The plot revolves around the sabotage of the Suez Canal, and the author ensures that there is never a dull moment. From shocking murders to ancient tombs and glamorous Egyptian balls, the story captivated me with its thrilling twists and turns. The protagonists are also exciting to read as they embark on a quest to uncover the truth.

Fiona and Kitty are absorbing characters as they navigate the mysterious events around them. What adds to the intrigue is Fiona’s own entanglement as a suspect in one of the murders, lending an extra layer of complexity to the story. I was particularly impressed by the forensic techniques in their investigation, given the period when the story takes place. As with previous installments, I enjoyed Fiona’s interactions with the Fredrick Fredricks and Archie, although their intermittent appearances were somewhat puzzling. Additionally, characters like La Sultana and Lady Evelyn left a lasting impression, contributing to the sense of mystery.

However, while “Covert in Cairo” offers an engaging continuation of the “Fiona Figg and Kitty Hall” series, I yearned for some aspects of the first book. Although we encountered notable historical figures such as Lawrence of Arabia and Howard Carter, I missed some intellectually stimulating discussions that were more prominent in the previous installment.

Overall, “Covert in Cairo” is a delightful addition to the series, and I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in the next installment of Fiona and Kitty’s adventures.

    Chaos at Carnegie Hall Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book of the “Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane” series, despite having yet to read any previous books featuring these characters in other series by the author.

There are a couple of reasons why this book captivated me. Firstly, I was impressed by the author’s storytelling style. The dialogues are witty and engaging, while the overall narrative has a grandeur that surpasses the typical cozy mystery series. From encountering suspicious activities aboard the RMS Adriatic, such as the disposal of a body, to shocking murders in Carnegie Hall, Fiona, Eliza, and Clifford embark on an intriguing quest to uncover the truth. I also found Fiona’s ability to disguise herself and pick locks to investigate the situation fun.

Secondly, Fiona’s character takes center stage, and the author adds drama to her storyline. I liked her interactions with Eliza, Archie, Clifford, and even Poppy. Moreover, the profound discussions she engages in with other characters, like Emily Hobhouse, concerning South African children in concentration camps, suffragettes, the mistreatment of refugees, poverty, and controlling population growth made the story memorable.

Thirdly, I appreciated the author’s skill in seamlessly integrating historical figures such as Thomas Edison, Anna Case, Dorothy Parker, Margaret Sanger, and J. Edgar Hoover into the plot, some even plausible suspects in the murder case. It’s rare to come across a series that attempts such an approach. I found it entertaining and cleverly executed without taking itself too seriously.

In conclusion, “Chaos at Carnegie Hall” is an exciting introduction to the series and left me eagerly anticipating how the storyline will unfold in the next book, especially considering the suspenseful note on which this one concludes.

    Vacations & Victims Review:

Firstly, I found the dynamics between Connie and her Aunt Concetta to be quite enjoyable. The author skillfully portrays their camaraderie, and I appreciated their protective nature towards their friend Beth and their determination to help clear her name.

Secondly, I was particularly drawn to the captivating drama between Curt and Beth, which the author cleverly weaved into a murder mystery. The story presents several potential suspects, keeping the reader engaged as Connie delves into the investigation while on her vacation in Marco Island. With its short length and fast-paced nature, the book never has a dull moment.

Moreover, I was pleasantly surprised by the author’s ability to keep me guessing the identity of the killer, despite the limited number of suspects.

However, the only drawback is that the plot occasionally falters as it alternates between scenes of Connie and Concetta enjoying their vacation and their pursuit of clues. While I am a fan of cozy mysteries, I found it slightly awkward to have detailed descriptions of Connie and Concetta’s leisure activities such as jetskiing interspersed with their investigative efforts.

Nevertheless, I consider “Vacations and Victims” to be a delightful prequel to the Sapphire Beach Cozy Mystery series. It piqued my interest, prompting me to pick up and delve into the series eagerly.

The suspicious death of an elderly widow on the grounds of the HomePort Estate sends shock waves through the seaside resort of Provincetown.

Wrongly accused of the murder, beloved entertainer Helena Handbasket forsakes her oceanside mansion and goes undercover to track down those responsible. Aided by her chosen family, she uses her comic genius and extraordinary talent for impersonation to navigate a maze of deception and greed that includes a museum break-in, thefts of iconic artwork, and some shady liaisons. As the investigation gains momentum, the past increasingly influences the present, exposing hidden secrets and imperiling Helena’s well-heeled existence.

Set amid Cape Cod’s natural beauty and vibrant summer season, this captivating sequel to The HomePort Journals unfolds against the backdrop of a small town struggling to balance its newfound celebrity with a cherished way of life.

    About the Author:

    A. C. Burch’s debut novel was the award-winning The HomePort Journals. He is also the author of a short story collection entitled A Book of Revelations.

His first decade as a Provincetown resident was spent living in a condominium where drama reigned supreme (see the short story, Even in Death in A Book of Revelations). In 1997, he bought an 1881 Cape in dire need of renovation and has been working on it ever since. The prior owner, whose family owned the property for 92 years, described it as haunted by the ghost of her grandmother, who was born, lived, and died in the house. Any odd occurrence is always attributed to “Bridey,” who was said to have regularly chased painter Charles Hawthorne and his students off her dune-top property. No doubt, the spectral denizens of HomePort owe their presence to her example.

    The Distance Between Us Review:

I didn’t know this book was part of a series, but I want to read the others! This book transported me back to the days of “Murder, She Wrote,” with its captivating protagonist, Helena, who solves crimes just like Jessica Fletcher in Cabot Cove. The author’s writing style and the diverse cast of characters make this cozy murder mystery novel truly stand out.

Moreover, I was particularly impressed by the book’s representation of the LGBTQIA+ community. It was refreshing to see such diversity and inclusion in a murder mystery, with gay couples and transgender characters like Helena working together to solve a mystery. Helena is a fantastic character, not only because of her quick wit but also her ability to connect with anyone. I particularly enjoyed her interactions with Melody, Mavis, Quincy, and especially Butch. The author skillfully develops the romance between Butch and Helena in the book’s second half, which adds an extra sparkle to the story.

Regarding the murder mystery, I constantly guessed who could be behind C.J.’s death and the museum vandalism and thefts. The author introduces several potential suspects, leaving readers wondering about their motives. I was on the edge of my seat during scenes like Helena falling overboard or Mavis encountering a helicopter targeting her for harm. The author also adds excitement by eliminating some of the suspects and incorporating red herrings, which makes the book even more entertaining.
On a side note, the author’s writing style is beautiful and unique.

Also, the author writes the tale like a painting, where you appreciate each sentence. Instead of traditional chapter numbers, the book uses headings and subheadings, adding a fun touch to the reading experience.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading “The Distance Between Us,” and now I’m eager to explore other books by this author.

    About the Author:
Scottish born, I now live on the Jurassic coast of Dorset with my husband, and Monty our enormous Cavalier. Our two adult children live in Yorkshire and Germany. As a lifelong sufferer from E.D.S, I cope with my restricted mobility by reading and writing. I often scribbled stories from childhood, stemming from Scotland, Cornwall, Norfolk, Essex, and the Home Counties. Now a teacher, tutor, and hotelier, I still scribble with each novel disappearing into a drawer! Changing primary schools, five in total, meant that I was unable to read until given special lessons. This gave me a deep love of reading, and being an only child, I devoured books. Following this experience, when I became unable to teach because of mobility problems, I became a home tutor. After extra training, I specialised in children with reading difficulties.  Still an avid reader, I love cosy mysteries, where the murder doesn’t scare me to death! The Open University helped with my exams, enabling me to continue studying. I had an amanuensis who wrote out my answers.  Of course, I did English and history, my great loves. Creative Writing was difficult as I love to write amusing and light pieces, and they preferred dark and dismal topics! I studied botanical art for many years and then got RSI. Determined to carry on with my art and writing, I now paint with my left hand and dictate all my novels. I still paint flowers trying to capture their beauty, it is hard work but so enjoyable. . Daisy And The Deadly Dagger Review:

“Daisy And The Deadly Dagger” is a fun start to the cozy mystery series I adored reading!

I loved Daisy in the lead and how she fits in with the others to form the priory five. Even though she knows she is getting old, she doesn’t let it stop her from living and making her own decisions. Even her bond with Jim makes the book stand out. Jim was another of my favorites, and I was intrigued by his secretive past. The author describes the characters as cutesy, and you adore them, like Sheila, Maggie, Martin, and even Flora and Cleo. Even Tenby, who appears grouchy, melts your heart and makes you laugh at his shenanigans, even when he tries to be serious.

Moreover, the author also wrote the plot nicely, where you have more than one mystery that Daisy and the team investigate. I enjoyed Jim’s approach in trying to help with the case. The angle with the Knights Templar also sparked my curiosity. Frankly, I had no idea about them, and reading this book made me further research and fascinated with the military order.

Also, the story paces beautifully, and there are some exciting moments, mainly when someone attacks them in the church or when they encounter a foul smell near the Wishing Well Cottage. I was surprised by some scenes’ excitement and felt how the group would get past it. Perhaps my only suggestion would have been to see the prominence of other figures, like Maggie and Sheila.

Overall I enjoyed reading “Daisy And The Deadly Dagger” and found it an exciting start to the Daisy series.
