Mark Vogel is like the older brother Stefan Riley never had, until one day he disappears, and Stefan has to adapt to life without him. But, one year later, when he runs into a girl who looks near-identical to Mark, Stefan becomes obsessed. He discovers that other boys have disappeared, too, dozens over the years, most of them students of the Royal College of Saint Almsworth, many of them troubled or unruly before their disappearance.

What is happening to these boys? Who are the handful of women on campus who bear a striking resemblance to some of those who went missing? And what is the connection to the mysterious Dorley Hall?

Stefan works hard to get into the Royal College for one reason and one reason only: to find out exactly what happened to the women who live at Dorley Hall, and to get it to happen to him, too.

A closeted trans girl attempts to infiltrate a secret underground forced feminisation programme.

Content note: this story engages with some reasonably dark topics, including but not limited to torture, manipulation, dysphoria, nonconsensual surgery, and kidnapping. While it isn’t intended to be a dark or dystopian story, the perspective characters are carrying a lot of baggage, and the exploration of the premise might be triggering for trans readers.

    Welcome to Dorley Hall Review:

When I first picked up “Welcome to Dorley Hall,” I had no idea what lay in store for me. From the beginning, the story captivated me with its intriguing premise and compelling characters. Steph, the protagonist, is an exciting character with solid motivations that drive the narrative forward. The friendships between Steph and Christine and the inclusion of Pippa added depth to the story, making their interactions delightful to read. Similarly, the bond between Aaron and Steph is exciting, showcasing a surreal but enjoyable friendship that evolves throughout the book. Aunt Bea and Abby also brought unique elements to the story, each contributing to the rich tapestry of characters that populate Dorley Hall.

Moreover, one of the standout aspects of the novel is how Alyson Greaves tackles transgender issues, presenting them in a unique and thought-provoking manner. Using gender transformation as a form of punishment is both innovative and controversial, prompting readers to consider new perspectives. This narrative device also explores personal reform and liberation themes, offering a refreshing outlook on the characters’ journeys. Including conversations in chat messages was a clever touch, adding authenticity and a trendy touch to the storytelling.

However, the book does have its drawbacks. At times, the narrative felt overly detailed and lengthy, with some descriptions and scenes that could have been condensed. While the rich character development is appreciated, the extensive detail occasionally bogged down the pacing. The book’s second half also tended to get preachy, detracting from the overall enjoyment.

Overall, “Welcome to Dorley Hall” is a decent read with a fascinating concept and well-drawn characters. Despite its slow pacing and occasional verbosity, it offers a unique perspective on transgender issues and how people cope with reform, stimulating intellectual curiosity and making it a thought-provoking addition to contemporary literature.

In this atmospheric southern cozy debut, Madeline Brimley returns to the bookstore she inherited, discovering that small towns hold deadly secrets.

Madeline Brimley left small town Georgia many years ago to go to college and pursue her dreams on the stage. Her dramatic escapades are many but success has eluded her, leaving her at loose ends. But then she gets word that has her beloved, eccentric Aunt Rose passed. Also she’s left Madeline her equally eccentric bookstore housed in an old Victorian mansion in the small college town of Enigma. She arrives in her beat-up Fiat to claim The Old Juniper Bookstore, and restart her life. But Madeline is faced with unexpected challenges. The gazebo in the back yard is set ablaze. And a late-night caller threatens to burn the whole store down if she doesn’t leave immediately.

But Madeline Brimley, not one to be intimidated, ignores the threats and soldiers on. Until there’s another fire and a murder in the store itself. Now with a cloud of suspicion falling over her, it’s up to Madeline to untangle the skein of secrets and find the killer before she herself is the next victim.

     Booked for Murder Review:

Poor Madeline. Upon arriving in her old hometown of Enigma to take over the business her Aunt Rose left her, she is stunned by threatening phone calls and fire scares. To make matters worse, she finds herself entangled in a murder that she must solve. I immediately liked how the author caught my attention as we tried to figure out what was happening in Enigma and why they would attack Madeline. This cozy mystery was a delightful read, skillfully crafted by the author to keep me guessing the killer’s identity until the final reveal. The expertly scattered red herrings maintained the suspense, making it engaging.

Moreover, it was fascinating to watch Madeline learn that appearances can be deceiving. We see Madeline question herself as she gains new insights into the people around her, leading to a refreshing shift in her perspectives. However, her reluctance to trust Billy and her attempts to do his job sometimes got on my nerves.

Gloria was undoubtedly my favorite character. Her snarky humor, wisdom, and calm demeanor made her incredibly endearing. The depth of characters like Philomena, David, Billy, and Bo added a layer of connection and authenticity to the story.

Also, the author’s love for the theater is evident through the numerous references made by Madeline and the other characters. While I’m not a theater enthusiast, I enjoyed reading these references and felt they enriched the story.

My only criticism is that the author occasionally included excessive details that slowed the plot. Although I didn’t expect a cozy mystery to be fast-paced, some sentences felt overly descriptive and could have been more concise.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed “Booked for Murder” and look forward to revisiting Madeline and the residents of Enigma in future installments.

    The Librarian Review:

Firstly, parts of this book struck me as philosophical and profound. Sometimes, we feel disconnected from the fast-paced world, wondering if we fit in. I appreciated Wesley as the protagonist, who initially feels out of place but gradually becomes more confident and learns to love herself, refusing to let people like Mr. Holt affect her. The story

Valerie Keogh’s “The Librarian” is a compelling thriller that expertly weaves surprising murders into an intricate plot. I liked the story’s theme, where Ava, the protagonist, feels that a mysterious man she turns down starts ruining her life. Initially, the incidents feel disconnected, and you wonder if the man is the cause. I liked how the author set up the plot, which kept me guessing. Moreover, Ava’s bond with Judy and Poppy adds emotional depth and relatability to the narrative. Keogh’s depiction of eerie scenes, especially those involving birds and a chilling museum incident, creates a palpable atmosphere that keeps readers on edge. One of the book’s most vital points is how it consistently keeps you guessing about the killer’s identity, ensuring a suspenseful read from start to finish.

However, ‘The Librarian’ has some flaws. The author’s tendency to over-describe certain aspects and repeat Ava’s feelings can slow the pacing and make some sections feel repetitive. While thorough, this meticulous attention to Ava’s emotional state can sometimes be tedious. Additionally, Ava’s character is a tad annoying at times, which might detract from the overall enjoyment for some readers.

Also, when picking up “The Librarian,” I expected a story deeply rooted in a library setting. However, the plot differs from this expectation, making the title somewhat misleading in relation to the story’s theme.

Despite these drawbacks, “The Librarian” is a gripping read with unexpected twists and a haunting atmosphere. Keogh’s ability to keep readers guessing about the killer’s identity makes it a worthwhile read for fans of the thriller genre. The strong bond between the main characters and the atmospheric tension are definite highlights that make this book memorable.

    Lamb of God Review:

There are several aspects of this book that I genuinely appreciate. Firstly, I liked our leading quartet of characters: Darren, Mikko, Helen, and Thomas. Thomas brought a fresh dynamic to Darren’s life, and the unexpected romantic angle between them added an intriguing element that I hadn’t expected from the previous books. I also enjoyed Colette and her complex friendship with Darren, alongside her work alongside McGregor. The author did a commendable job of deepening the characters and making them more relatable, allowing me to connect with them deeper in this book.

Moreover, the plot was also suspenseful, and the mystery surrounding the Wild Woman captivated me. The author skillfully incorporated some macabre moments, like the unsettling discovery in the woods. Among my favorite moments were the incident at the construction site in the park and the captivating discussions about secret societies.

Speaking of which, I found the philosophical and theological viewpoints expressed by the characters regarding sacrifice, self-loathing, and the influence of social media and internet personalities as modern anchorites fascinating. The introduction of the enigmatic character Angelo Zotti added an extra layer of intrigue, especially in his conversations with Helen about different perspectives on spirituality.

However, having read the series in order from the beginning, this book takes a departure from the high-adrenaline trilogy that preceded it. The author veered away from supernatural murders, and this book felt more like a toned-down murder mystery. I’ll admit that I missed the thrilling moments and the multiple murder whodunits that were prominent in the previous books.

Nevertheless, “Lamb of God” proved to be a solid addition to the series overall. It maintained its appeal and left me eager to continue with the next installment if the author continues it.

The five partners who own the small town book store The Paper Pirate have two issues to worry.. There is the looming deadline to pay off a balloon mortgage . In addition  a menacing stealthy crook who systematically searches first the shop, then each of their homes. He takes nothing and barely leaves traces of his presence As such, the police can’t be of much help, and simply promise to keep an eye on Charlie Santorelli, Lavinia “Vinnie” Holcomb, Al Rockleigh, Felicia Cocolo and Lenora Stern. It’s a mystery to them but the reader knows that Rick Foster, a shady rare-books dealer and his sidekick Nina Bartov are on the hunt for a particular old volume that sits unnoticed on a shelf in

The Paper Pirate’s used book section. It’s an obscure early work of the not-so successful author Benjamin Conway, and it’s badly defaced. But a very wealthy man is willing to pay Rick a half a million dollars for it. Seems an ancestor of his eluded the henchmen of a nineteenth-century dictator by escaping to New York. And  he eventually took refuge in the northeastern Pennsylvania countryside. Before he was captured and killed, he’d scribbled as much evidence of the tyrant’s sins . And he could fit into the blank spaces of a copy of The Stargazer at Dawn . He then hid it where he hoped his comrades would find it. They never did.

The five friends also are members of a writers’ group, and each of them has a secret. One is penning an erotic novel on the sly, another hides a painful estrangement with an only child. And a deadly teenaged mistake causes a third to sabotage her every chance at happiness in the present. A partner who claims to be unpublished actually is a one-hit-wonder with a thirty-year-old best-selling novel followed by a crippling literary failure. The last has a family with criminal connections—he’s spent half a lifetime avoiding them.

    About the Author:

Dawn McIntyre is a New Jersey native and long-time resident of rural Pennsylvania. After years of remodeling houses and working in corporate America, she began devoting more time to her true passion–building with words. The result, so far, has been a portfolio of short stories and novels.

Among them are stories about a young girl struggling to emerging from the shadow of an abusive mother to discover the rest of the world and her place in it, a teen who escapes her stifling extended family to start fresh in the home of her estranged father–a man who realizes too late how much he wants the daughter he left behind, and a thirty-something journalist who discovers the illicit secrets of a historic figure he’s researching and must face a decision to reveal and profit from them, or to conceal and protect the reputations of long-dead people he’s come to admire and respect.

The story of a middle-aged woman who impulsively reaches out to offer comfort to a guilt-ridden stranger and finds that her good deed has only dredged up misery from her own past followed a quirky tale of a young couple threatened by a hex visited upon them by a jealous ex-lover. The twice-told yarn about a literary grave robber planning to plagiarize a story entrusted to her by an adoring fan was written in response to a prompt suggested by a friend, as was the all-dialogue historical heart-to-heart between a young gay man and his mischievous aunt.

Her first book brought to life an ornery, twentysomething woman, viewed during the summer that changed her life, and her second, self-published novel addressed the prevalence, stupidity and tenacity of prejudice. The cozy mystery, The Paper Pirate, published by Running Wild Press, will make its debut on November 8, 2022.

McIntyre founded, along with two fellow authors, a writers’ workshop in 2013 that met at the Hawley Library until the Covid pandemic necessitated a switch to virtual gatherings. She continues to write fiction populated by richly nuanced characters in deceptively simple, familiar settings.

    The Paper Pirate Review:

“The Paper Pirate” is a fun, cozy-mystery themed story with charming characters that will make it enjoyable! The plot is short and simple, and initially, I was skeptical about whether I would get bored. A bookstore is in trouble. The owners, a group of friends, must find ways to save it. But, we have two villains who realize there is a valuable book in the store that they need to get their hands on. Sounds simple, right? Yet, the author writes the bond between the characters so beautifully that you don’t want to stop reading about them.I loved Felicia, Al, Vinnie, Charlie, and Lenora. Choosing one over the other is tough as they all bring something new. The author writes each of them distinctly, highlighting their desires, frustrations, and uncertainties. The tale has exciting, dramatic moments, like tensions between Al and Vinnie or Lenora and Jason. I found Vinnie and Charlie to be the most complex. Some moments shocked me, like when Lenora talked about Eric. The characters face personal struggles while coping with relationships and solving problematic situations, like their determination to protect the bookstore. My heart went out to all of them! Moreover, I loved how the author showcased the love for books with the theme, where we see how our characters try to pull money to save the store—reading this tale in an age where bookstores and libraries close in real life was heartwarming. Each character finds solace in books, and some scenes are endearing, like when they call other book enthusiasts to share their love for books. The plot, in itself, was fun, yet it could have been better. However, the end surprised me, as I did not expect it. Overall, “The Paper Pirate” is a fun, cozy mystery.

Her ex is hellbent on destroying her. How far will she go to stop him?

Vanessa and Curtis have just moved to an idyllic house in the seaside town of Whitstable. Their life there is wonderful, until Vanessa’s ex-boyfriend Hayden shows up out of the blue.

Hayden is not only brash and unpredictable with a warped sense of humour, he also seems intent on making life very difficult for Vanessa, who hasn’t seen him since she was sixteen.

As Hayden causes more and more disruption in their lives, Curtis begins to realise that he has some kind of bizarre hold on Vanessa.

And when she suggests a plan to remove Hayden from their lives forever, Curtis becomes convinced she’s hiding some big secret from her past.

But has Vanessa underestimated how dangerous and unpredictable Hayden is? How far will he go to get what he wants? And how far will she go to stop her perfect life from being destroyed?

The Visit is a gripping psychological thriller with satisfying twists and turns that will keep readers enthralled till the very end.

Robert has a huge passion for screenwriting for many years and started writing novels during the first lockdown.

    The Visit Review:

What I enjoyed about the story is how unpredictable the author made it. Initially, you think the story will be a familiar tale of how someone from Vanessa’s past comes into her life. Yes, we have that, but the story is much more! You have psychic friends, people who blackmail, people vowing revenge, and others who come into the canvas and shake the story. The author even writes Vanessa and Curtis in such a way that makes you study the characters and figure out what is happening. Even Delphine and Hayden sparked the story! Moreover, the author takes the story in a direction you don’t expect. You have demonic rituals, false identities, and so much more happening, to name a few. The story is fast-paced, and it is hard to put down.Perhaps the only downside is that the story initially staggers where you feel nothing is happening. The story picks up when Hayden comes into the picture.Overall, “The Visit” is a fun thriller worth checking out.

The suspicious death of an elderly widow on the grounds of the HomePort Estate sends shock waves through the seaside resort of Provincetown.

Wrongly accused of the murder, beloved entertainer Helena Handbasket forsakes her oceanside mansion and goes undercover to track down those responsible. Aided by her chosen family, she uses her comic genius and extraordinary talent for impersonation to navigate a maze of deception and greed that includes a museum break-in, thefts of iconic artwork, and some shady liaisons. As the investigation gains momentum, the past increasingly influences the present, exposing hidden secrets and imperiling Helena’s well-heeled existence.

Set amid Cape Cod’s natural beauty and vibrant summer season, this captivating sequel to The HomePort Journals unfolds against the backdrop of a small town struggling to balance its newfound celebrity with a cherished way of life.

    About the Author:

    A. C. Burch’s debut novel was the award-winning The HomePort Journals. He is also the author of a short story collection entitled A Book of Revelations.

His first decade as a Provincetown resident was spent living in a condominium where drama reigned supreme (see the short story, Even in Death in A Book of Revelations). In 1997, he bought an 1881 Cape in dire need of renovation and has been working on it ever since. The prior owner, whose family owned the property for 92 years, described it as haunted by the ghost of her grandmother, who was born, lived, and died in the house. Any odd occurrence is always attributed to “Bridey,” who was said to have regularly chased painter Charles Hawthorne and his students off her dune-top property. No doubt, the spectral denizens of HomePort owe their presence to her example.

    The Distance Between Us Review:

I didn’t know this book was part of a series, but I want to read the others! This book transported me back to the days of “Murder, She Wrote,” with its captivating protagonist, Helena, who solves crimes just like Jessica Fletcher in Cabot Cove. The author’s writing style and the diverse cast of characters make this cozy murder mystery novel truly stand out.

Moreover, I was particularly impressed by the book’s representation of the LGBTQIA+ community. It was refreshing to see such diversity and inclusion in a murder mystery, with gay couples and transgender characters like Helena working together to solve a mystery. Helena is a fantastic character, not only because of her quick wit but also her ability to connect with anyone. I particularly enjoyed her interactions with Melody, Mavis, Quincy, and especially Butch. The author skillfully develops the romance between Butch and Helena in the book’s second half, which adds an extra sparkle to the story.

Regarding the murder mystery, I constantly guessed who could be behind C.J.’s death and the museum vandalism and thefts. The author introduces several potential suspects, leaving readers wondering about their motives. I was on the edge of my seat during scenes like Helena falling overboard or Mavis encountering a helicopter targeting her for harm. The author also adds excitement by eliminating some of the suspects and incorporating red herrings, which makes the book even more entertaining.
On a side note, the author’s writing style is beautiful and unique.

Also, the author writes the tale like a painting, where you appreciate each sentence. Instead of traditional chapter numbers, the book uses headings and subheadings, adding a fun touch to the reading experience.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading “The Distance Between Us,” and now I’m eager to explore other books by this author.

    Her Husband’s Lies Review:

Firstly, I enjoyed the premise of the story and the way the author described it. A man in a coma, a wife searching for answers, and a psychic giving clues in bits and pieces. The story grabbed my attention right from the beginning. While the pacing is slow, I liked how it adds to the suspense and makes the tale atmospheric.

Callie was fun in the lead. Yes, she sometimes got on my nerves because of some bad decisions, like going to Nathan’s house alone and doing things before confronting Footman. But I enjoyed how she searched for answers about Abel’s life. On the other hand, Althea was my favorite character. The author wrote her so well that we see how conflicted she gets over her abilities, and she sometimes doesn’t trust them. I enjoyed the concept of alternative memory and how the author described it. The supporting cast, like Footman and Cormac, also added nicely.

Quite a few moments also had me at the edge of my seat, like Callie finding herself trapped when they go to the cabin or when she gets uncomfortable in Nathan’s house. The author writes the suspense well, and you get quite a few red herrings and twists you don’t see coming. I also liked how the story sets the premise for a continuation, which I would love to pick up if we have a continuation! The side story of the missing girls also blended well.

Perhaps the only downside is how some subplots didn’t have any progression, like Cynthia, and some characters disappear in the background in the latter half.

Overall, I immensely enjoyed “Her Husband’s Lies” and hope the author writes a sequel.

A quiet coastal village in post–World War II America is shaken when the secrets of the past and present collide in a riveting novel by the bestselling author of Under a Gilded Moon.

Five years after the war, Amie Stilwell, a photo interpreter for an Allied unit in England, returns to her hometown in Maine. Jobless and discouraged but stubbornly resourceful, she’s starting over in the same coastal village where her life once went so wrong. Waiting for her is Shibby Travis, the surrogate mother with whom Amie never lost touch. But the unexpected also awaits…

A silent, abandoned boy is found with a note from a stranger pleading that he be watched over. Amie and Shibby take him in, but the mysteries multiply when a Boston socialite is found dead in Amie’s barn and an old friend, believed to be a casualty of war, suddenly reappears.

Trained to see what others cannot, to scan for clues, and to expose enemies, Amie uses her skills to protect a child, solve a crime, and find the motive behind a veteran’s masquerade. But through the hazy filter of a town’s secrets, Amie must also confront her own painful past.

    A Bend Of Light Review:

“A Bend Of Light” is a delightfully fun mystery thriller with a touch of historical fiction, drama, mystery, and past secrets that stands out in the genre.

Firstly, I loved how the author set up the plot with multiple storylines. On the one hand, you have Amie returning to town to locate her friend Jake and landing herself in a mystery involving a Bentley. On the other hand, you have a mysterious boy, Chester, show up, who Shibby takes in and tries to find out his background. Then, you have Tom in Boston, who doesn’t want his picture to show up in the papers for some reason. All these stories seamlessly merge as we see the characters intermingle. Amie, Shibby, and Tom were the highlights, and I enjoyed how the author progressed the mystery. Even Stella, Ian, and Desmond were mysterious, and I wondered about their true intentions. Stella and Tess, in particular, had a strong aura and made the story exciting. The story has a large cast of characters, and each of them brings something new.

Secondly, I loved how the story takes us back to the 1950s to the quaint setting of Maine. The author adds quite a few twists and turns that surprised me, and I enjoyed how charming yet exciting it was for the genre. Some of my favorite moments were when Amie meets Tess for the first time to show the sails and how the plot progresses toward the climax.

Overall, I enjoyed “A Bend Of Light” and didn’t notice the time fly. It is one of my favorites by the author, in addition to “Under a Gilded Moon.”

Two kidnappings, thirty years apart. Can Stacey face her own dark past in order to save her stepdaughter?

When Stacey’s ex-husband turns up on her doorstep begging her to help save his kidnapped thirteen-year-old daughter, Lyra, the terror is all too familiar. Stacey’s own violent kidnapping thirty years ago was never solved. While a severe case of amnesia spares her from recalling the specific horrors, she remembers enough…

Stacey knows her father never paid the ransom. She has the missing pinkie finger to prove it. She knows she was only saved because of an anonymous tip-off to the police. And she knows her captor was never apprehended.

Lyra’s kidnappers have made it clear the police must not get involved. But Stacey can’t shake the eerie similarities between the two cases. She’ll use whatever she can, from her journalistic powers to her shady contacts, to save Lyra from the same nightmare. Desperate to find any link between Lyra’s abduction and her own, Stacey forces herself to revisit her forgotten, traumatic past for clues.

But can she make sense of the terrible secrets she unearths in time to save Lyra? And if she does, is she ready to face her own tormentor?

I have read quite a few suspense crime thrillers and found “Behind Closed Doors” to be a unique premise. It was interesting to see how our main lead, Stacey, investigates the kidnapping of her stepdaughter when she was a victim of a similar incident many years back. Moreover, the kidnapper is a copycat in many ways, where they follow the same methods of revealing clues as Stacey’s, and you wonder why they would target her family after so many years.

I liked Stacey in the lead and thought the author wrote her perfectly with flaws. Some of my favorite moments in the books are when she remembers the past with Doctor Erin, which reveals a part of her trauma that had locked up long back. The author also paces the story nicely, where you meet various people who could have the motive for kidnapping Lyra. When you figure out who it could be, the author throws you off and brings another character from Stacey’s past into the picture. The twist in the end also threw me off and was one I did not see coming, which made the story enjoyable.

Moreover, I liked the cast of characters too. Ashraf and Erin were my favorites, and I loved the dynamic they brought in. Jack also had his moments and spiced up the tale with his emotions. However, the most exciting person was Bella. She was unpredictable and fierce, and I enjoyed her flashback scenes with Stacey. Even Ox was fun with the way he found out information. I hope the author writes more books with Stacey and these characters, and I would love to revisit them.

Overall, I enjoyed “Behind Closed Doors” and thought the author executed it well!
