A captivating modern-day fantasy filled with intrigue, suspense, mythology, magical objects, and special abilities, Jo Visuri’s adventurous tale will sweep you away to mystical Auor Island—where nothing is quite as it seems!

A remote island. Old secrets. And a cascade of unintended consequences.

Long ago, four clans from earth’s four corners were given magical abilities to help save humanity from oblivion. For generations, their descendants have lived in hidden communities without in touch with regular humans, leading to whispers of unforeseen consequences.
Now, in the present day and for unknown purposes, one Clan quietly and desperately seeks the rumored, undiscovered offspring.

Meanwhile, in the heart of a northern archipelago, Elin Bodil leads a perfectly ordinary, happy life on Auor Island with her family. By accident, she meets both a motorcycle driving stranger and the new mysterious boy next door. And Elin’s world is turned upside down.
As Elin is drawn into a brewing supernatural conflict with her two unusual acquaintances on opposite sides, she must decide who to trust while unearthing her island’s secrets and those buried deep within herself. But when the search for answers triggers the Clan’s sinister schemes, Elin and her companions will have to confront far bigger and deadlier secrets than they ever imagined. And they’ll need much more than themselves to survive.

Welcome to Auor Island and the legend and magic within its ruins.

    The Undiscovered Descendants Review:

“The Undiscovered Descendants” is a gripping fantasy novel that would lure you into its exciting world and make you want more.

When the story started, I thought it would be another young adult drama novel as the new neighbor arrives. When they meet each other, Elin and Aeden have sizzling chemistry, and I wondered how it would progress. But, the story shook me when Hunter Tristan entered the picture and targeted Elin for the awakening ritual. The author opened a whole new world with the Dormant Descendants and Clans, and I could not put the book down.

The beauty of the tale is how all the characters appear somewhat gray, and you don’t know if they are hiding something. I enjoyed the dynamics of all the three characters, like when Aeden feels Elin slipping away from him when she spends more time with Tristan. The author also reveals the world in bits and pieces, so you fit the details as the story progresses. Some memorable moments in the tale are the scenes at the coffee shop or what happens at the dance. While the story starts off a bit slow, the author speeds the pace gradually, which eventually leads to a thrilling climax in the library.

There are some surprising twists that I did not see coming. I also enjoyed how the author toggled the storyline from the three characters’ perspectives, making you closely connect with them. The author ends the book in a cliffhanger that makes you scream at the story and look forward to the next installment.

Overall, “The Undiscovered Descendants” is a gripping start to the series, and I can’t wait to read how it continues.

Two sisters become trapped in the underworld and in the scheme of deities, shapeshifters, and ghouls–in this lush and dangerous Phoenician mythology-inspired fantasy.

Sixteen-year-old sisters Samira and Rima aren’t exactly living the dream. Instead, they live with their maddeningly unreliable mother in a rundown trailer in Michigan. Dad’s dead, money’s tight, and Mom disappears for days at a time. So when Sam’s grandfather wills her the family valuables–a cache of Lebanese antiquities–she’s desperate enough to try pawning them before Mom can.

But she shouldn’t. Because one is cursed, forbidden, the burial coin of a forgotten god. Disturbing it condemns her and Rima to the Phoenician underworld, a place of wicked cities, burning cedar forests, poisoned feasts of milk and lemons, and an endless, windless ocean.

Nothing is what it seems. No one is who they say. And down here, the night never ends.

To get home–and keep her sister safe–Sam will have to outwit beautiful shapeshifters, pose as a royal bride, sail the darkest sea… and maybe kill the god of death himself.

    Vial of Tears Review:

“Vial of Tears” is a fantastic middle-grade adventure mythological fantasy filled with Lebanese culture that also takes you to the Underworld, and I could not put it down.

I loved everything about this story from the get-go. The author tells the story so grippingly that something thrilling happens in nearly every chapter. Some fantastic scenes just stood out and etched in my mind. For instance, I loved Sam’s part with the women in the tent, skeptical to know her future. My second favorite was when she gets a sense of Deja Vu when she sees the picture before the guards chase her. Another unforgettable moment was when Sam swims and sees a shadow circling beneath her.

Similarly, world-building is also incredible. The Underworld is a place where nothing is what it seems, and it was fascinating to see what was real and what wasn’t. The story impressed me because the author has the underlying current of love and family throughout the book. For instance, my heart went out to Sam and Rima when they thought they saw their father. The author also adds unique fantasy elements like Shapeshifters and magical artifacts to the story, giving it a special touch.

The characters are also lovely. I loved Sam in the lead as she coped with what happened to her father and her mother’s disappearance. Even the supporting characters like Eshmun, Teth, and Meem added nicely. I also adored the middle-eastern terms I got to know, like the “Baalbek” and “Ruha.” The author perfectly executed everything about the story, from the characters, plot, and mythology aspects.

Overall, I loved “Vial of Tears” and found it one of the best middle-grade adventure mythology books I have read this year.

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Lori M. Lee’s middle grade debut about a lonely Hmong girl who discovers she’s a powerful shaman warrior in this fantasy inspired by Southeast Asian mythology.

Pahua Moua has a bit of a reputation for being a weirdo. A lonely eleven-year-old Hmong girl with the unique ability to see spirits, she spends her summer days babysitting her little brother and playing with her best friend, a cat spirit no one else can see.

One day Pahua accidentally untethers an angry spirit from the haunted bridge in her neighborhood–whoops. When her brother suddenly falls sick and can’t be awoken, Pahua fears that the bridge spirit has stolen his soul. She returns to the scene of the crime with her aunt’s old shaman tools, hoping to confront the spirit and demand her brother’s return. Instead, she summons a demon.

Thankfully, a warrior shaman with a bit of an attitude problem shows up at the last minute and saves her butt. With the help of this guide, Pahua will have to find her way through the spirit worlds and rescue her brother’s soul before it’s too late. Little does she know she’ll have her own discoveries to make along the way. . . .

With its unforgettable characters, unique nature-based magic system, breathtaking twists and reveals, and climactic boss battle, this story based on Hmong oral tradition offers everything a fantasy lover could want.

    About the Author:

Pahua and the Soul Stealer Review:

“Pahua and the Soul Stealer” is an excellent addition to the Rick Riordan series and does not disappoint!

Firstly, I had no idea about the Hmong Culture until I read this book. Right from the beginning, I liked Pahua and was intrigued by her powers to see spirits. I loved her connection with Miv. Miv is adorable as her cat spirit, with the snarky, humorous dialogues. As the story progresses, Pahua also meets Zhong, and they go on an epic adventure quest to save Pahua’s brother Matt. The author excitingly wrote the book! Each chapter ends with a shocking cliffhanger that makes you unable to put the book down and continue reading. Many scenes made the story memorable, like when the demon initially attacks her or when she and Zhong move into the echo, and when they meet Spike. From waterfalls to tunnels to mountains, Pahua experiences traveling across all kinds of platforms to help her brother.

Pahua is excellent in the lead. In the beginning, she is more of a wallflower where other girls like Hailey overshadow her. But as the story progresses, you see her confidence shine. Moreover, I liked her because she doesn’t use brutal force to attack whoever threatens her in the story. I like how she uses other skills like persuasion and bargaining to get out of a situation. Zhong and Pahua have contrasting personalities, and they both work so well together. The story is magical as they come across various forms of spirits. Xov is also a formidable character.

My only minor criticism is how the author could have used characters like June to a higher potential. Apart from that, I loved “Pahua and the Soul Stealer” and found it a promising start to the series.

The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities Review:

“The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities” is a creative collection of tales featuring some of our favorite characters!

“Beware the Grove of True Love” was my favorite! I love the Aru Shah series, and this one was awesome! The author takes the classic Indian tale of Dushyanta and Shakuntala and weaves it into Aru’s world, and I loved it! My second favorite was “Bruto and the Freaky Flower,” as I love Paola Santiago, and it was exciting to see her fight the scary chupacabras and save Bruto with Dante. My third favorite story was “The Demon Drum.” Even though I haven’t read “Race to the Sun,” I loved the plot surrounding the curse and how it connected with the drums. Davery and Nizhoni also made a nice pair. “The Loneliest Demon” and “My Life as a Child Outlaw” was also memorable.

“Calamity Juice” was a mixed bag because I have not read the Sal and Gabi series. However, I did find the story very creative as Sal and Gabi search for Gladis, and we meet characters like Norberto and Yasmany along the way. Similarly, even “The Cave of Doom” was fun as Brooke and Zane encounter a demon even though I have not read the Storm Runner series.

However, there were stories that I had not read the original books of, like Dragon Pearl, and still enjoyed “The Initiation.” This story was entertaining as Min starts her assignment on the Thousand Worlds Domestic Security Ministry. I loved Duri in the story. Similarly, Gum Baby was hilarious, and I laughed at the scene where the room gets covered with spoiled honey.

Overall, this book would be perfect if you are already familiar with the characters before reading the tale. Else, it might be a hit or miss with some readers.

“Worthy of every magical ounce.” – Kirkus, starred review

On Emblem Island all are born knowing their fate. Their lifelines show the course of their life and an emblem dictates how they will spend it.

Twelve-year-old Tor Luna was born with a leadership emblem, just like his mother. But he hates his mark and is determined to choose a different path for himself. So, on the annual New Year’s Eve celebration, where Emblemites throw their wishes into a bonfire in the hopes of having them granted, Tor wishes for a different power.

The next morning Tor wakes up to discover a new marking on his skin…the symbol of a curse that has shortened his lifeline, giving him only a week before an untimely death. There is only one way to break the curse, and it requires a trip to the notorious Night Witch.

With only his village’s terrifying, ancient stories as a guide, and his two friends Engle and Melda by his side, Tor must travel across unpredictable Emblem Island, filled with wicked creatures he only knows through myths, in a race against his dwindling lifeline.

Curse of the Night Witch Review:

Snow beasts, trolls, and witches, oh my! The Curse of the Night Witch did not disappoint!

Firstly, I commend the author for writing such an exciting middle-grade fantasy novel. I cannot believe it is the author’s debut novel because she delivered it flawlessly. I loved the concept of the story about Emblems, markings, symbols, lifelines, and curses. The way the author constructed the world is also very innovative. We see different sides of Emblem Island, from the mountains to the Troll Tunnels and the rain forests.

Moreover, I adored the concept of a story within a story. Some of my favorite ones were The Weeping Woman, the history of Estrelle, and the Cave of Cosas. The author weaves the main story with these standalone tales so nicely, and I loved how the three characters used their knowledge to go about their quest.

The author also wrote the emotions of the characters nicely. In the beginning, you see that Tor and Melda don’t get along with each other. However, as the story progresses, you notice the bond they form. I loved the bond that Tor, Engle, and Melda share as they go on their journey to see the Night Witch. Frankly, I thought Tor was great in the lead with the various emotions he goes through. Some passages in the story touched me, like when Tor realizes he had never known hunger or struggle and realizes how lucky he is in some ways. I loved how the author matured him in the tale. Similarly, Engle and Melda are charming. The story also ends in a cliffhanger that makes you want to read the next book.

Overall, “Curse of the Night Witch” is a lovely start to the Emblem Island series, and I look forward to reading the continuation.

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents the sequel to Tehlor Kay Mejia’s critically acclaimed own-voices novel about science-obsessed Paola Santiago.

Six months after Paola Santiago confronted the legendary La Llorona, life is nothing like she’d expected it to be. She is barely speaking to her best friends, Dante and Emma, and what’s worse, her mom has a totally annoying boyfriend. Even with her chupacabra puppy, Bruto, around, Pao can’t escape the feeling that she’s all alone in the world.

Pao has no one to tell that she’s having nightmares again, this time set in a terrifying forest. Even more troubling? At their center is her estranged father, an enigma of a man she barely remembers. And when Dante’s abuela falls mysteriously ill, it seems that the dad Pao never knew just might be the key to healing the eccentric old woman.

Pao’s search for her father will send her far from home, where she will encounter new monsters and ghosts, a devastating betrayal, and finally, the forest of her nightmares. Will the truths her father has been hiding save the people Pao loves, or destroy them?

Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares Review:

“Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares” is a book that I was highly anticipating reading because I loved the first book, and it did not disappoint!

While I devoured the first book in one sitting, I loved this story more than “River of Tears.” The author makes sure to stay true to the theme of the first story yet, making it distinctive from it at the same time. I felt the story picked up full speed when Pao goes to see Señora Mata at the hospital. Hospitals tend to creep me out in general, and this book had scenes with creepy supernatural stuff taking place that gave me shivers. The story brilliantly continues as we have mysterious creatures like the Fantasma and beasts, a crazy road trip, and many other twists and turns.

Paola is again fantastic, and I feel she is one of my top favorite characters in the RRP series world. She goes through a lot in the story, and I could not turn my eyes away when she meets her father. Moreover, I was surprised by Paola’s friendship with Naomi in the tale, as it was not something I anticipated. The two of them form a very dynamic duo as they go on their adventure. Similarly, the author shocks us with incidents surrounding Dante, Emma, and even Pao’s mom. On a side note, I also liked the LGBTQ nod around Emma and that we got to know more about her in this book.

Overall, “Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares” is an excellent continuation of the “Paola Santiago” series and exceeded my expectations. I wonder how the third book can top it off.

Space-obsessed 12-year-old Paola Santiago and her two best friends, Emma and Dante, know the rule: Stay away from the river. It’s all they’ve heard since a schoolmate of theirs drowned a year ago. Pao is embarrassed to admit that she has been told to stay away for even longer than that, because her mother is constantly warning her about La Llorona, the wailing ghost woman who wanders the banks of the Gila at night, looking for young people to drag into its murky depths.

Hating her mother’s humiliating superstitions and knowing that she and her friends would never venture into the water, Pao organizes a meet-up to test out her new telescope near the Gila, since it’s the best stargazing spot. But when Emma never arrives and Pao sees a shadowy figure in the reeds, it seems like maybe her mom was right. . . .

Pao has always relied on hard science to make sense of the world, but to find her friend she will have to enter the world of her nightmares, which includes unnatural mist, mind-bending monsters, and relentless spirits controlled by a terrifying force that defies both logic and legend.

Paola Santiago and the River of Tears Review:

This book did not disappoint, and I thought it was an excellent addition to my RRP collection. Moreover, this book is different from the other Rick Riordan Presents books because it focuses more on the paranormal than mythology. I loved how the author incorporated the tale of La Llorona into the story, as it is not something that is the prime focus. Also, just like most Rick Riordan Presents novels, there are so many exciting adventure moments that kept me at the edge of my seat. The author does not shy away from twists and turns as Pao finds herself in a haunted cactus field full of ghosts or gets stabbed suddenly or fights Mano Pachona, to name a few.

Paola is fantastic in the role, and she made the book shine. Seeing how she sees everything scientifically, it was interesting to see her reactions when she embarks on her journey. Moreover, I loved Pao’s friendship with Dante and how they went about their journey to rescue Emma. It was interesting to see how their friendship was put to the test as the story progresses. Moreover, I liked the other characters like Marisa and Naomi as well.

The author also adds a level of mystery behind the glow of the green water and River Gila. I liked how she made the story atmospheric. The story leads to a gripping climax, where you see the bigger picture. I was at the edge of my seat towards the end and could not put the book down. The author even makes the negative characters complex, which makes you feel emotional towards them.

Overall, “Paola Santiago and the River of Tears” is an excellent start to the “Paola Santiago” series, and I cant wait to see how it continues.

“A heart-wrenching adventure with big laughs and well-earned surprises.” –Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

She’s desperate to make it onto her school’s cricket team because she’ll get to play her favorite sport AND use the cricket matches to distract Daddy from dating.

The next day, Daddy brings home a new catch, a beautiful woman named Mariss. And unlike the other girlfriends, this one doesn’t scare easily. Josephine knows there’s something fishy about Mariss but she never expected her to be a vengeful sea creature eager to take her place as her father’s first love! Josephine Against the Sea Review:

    Click to vinew on Instagram

“Josephine against the Sea” is a beautiful middle-grade novel about a girl who tries to save her father from a mythical creature, and I enjoyed reading it!

As such Josephine is lovely in the lead, and I liked the relationship that Josephine shared with her father. Right from the first page, the two carry a special bond, where it feels like it is the two of them against the world. Josephine also shares a good bond with Akhai. The two are as thick as thieves, and I admired how Akhai helped Josephine in her farfetched schemes. Moreover, I loved all the cricket references the author adds in a passionate way to get a reader interested in the game.

However, the story picked up wonderfully once Mariss entered the picture. Right away, you get a sense that things are going to escalate quickly between the two. Mariss is a great antagonist because she comes across as invincible. It was interesting to see the various tactics Josephine came up with to beat Mariss, only for Mariss to beat her at her own game. Mariss is a delightfully evil villain and sparked the story. I got glued to the story because I wondered what Josephine would do.

There are many twists and turns the author adds to make the story exciting. Some of my favorite moments were when they go to the zoo, and Josephine tries to take a picture, or when they go to the beach, and Ms. Alleyne falls for Mariss’s trap. The author paces the story very nicely, leading to a big climax that had me at the edge of my seat.

Overall, “Josephine against the Sea” is a great middle-grade fantasy novel, and I cannot wait to see how the next book in the series continues.

Graci Kim’s thrilling debut about an adopted Korean-American girl and her magic on a perilous journey to save her witch clan family.

Riley Oh can’t wait to see her sister get initiated into the Gom clan, a powerful lineage of Korean healing witches family for generations. Her sister, Hattie, will earn her Gi bracelet and finally be able to cast spells without adult supervision. Although Riley is desperate to follow in her sister’s footsteps when she herself turns thirteen, she’s a person without magic. Riley was adopted, and despite having memorized every healing spell she’s ever heard, she often feels like the odd one out in her family and the gifted community.

Then Hattie gets an idea: what if the two of them could cast a spell that would allow Riley to share Hattie’s magic? Their sleuthing reveals a promising incantation in the family’s old spellbook, and the sisters decide to perform it at Hattie’s initiation ceremony. If it works, no one will ever treat Riley as an outsider again.

Until it isn’t, when the sisters attempt to violate the laws of the God realm, Hattie’s life ends up hanging in the balance, and to save her, Riley has to fulfill an impossible task: find the last fallen star.

As Riley embarks on her search, she finds herself meeting fantastic creatures and collaborating with her worst enemies. The Last Fallen Star Review:

The books from “Rick Riordan Presents” are the ones I go to for exceptional middle-grade mythologies, and “The Last Fallen Star” does not disappoint. Based on Korean mythology, and it is an excellent start to the “Gifted Clans” series.

What I loved about the story is Riley’s character. Riley is one of the best middle-grade characters I have ever read because of the sacrifices she makes. There are many excellent middle-grade protagonists out there who show bravery and love to do what is right. But the challenges Riley faces and the decisions she has to make are at another level that it made her one of my all-time favorite characters. Even the supporting characters like Emmett, Taeyo, and Hattie add nicely to the plot. I loved Emmett’s storyline and the backstory with his mother. There are also some mysterious characters we meet along the way, like the Bearded man. Jennie was another one who surprised me because I did not initially like her but felt sad for her later in the tale.

On the other hand, the author also balances the characters with an exciting plot. I loved learning about Korean mythology and the various Clans and terms. While the first few pages took me time to understand all the words, I quickly registered in my mind, and I loved reading them. Also, the author does not disappoint in the action and adventure. Riley and her friends face extraordinary experiences, and one of my favorite moments was when she deals with inmyeonjo. The author paces the story beautifully, leading to an explosive climax that will have you at the edge of your seat.

Overall, I loved “The Last Fallen Star” and eagerly await the next book’s release in the series.

Twelve-year-old Abby Beckett is proud to come from a long line of elite Viking warriors known as the Aesir. She’s spent her entire life training to hunt the horrific creatures known as Grendels, the ancient foe of the Aesir. It was just like her mother did before she died. But there’s just one small problem: No one has seen a Grendel in centuries.  The Viking Council wants to disband the Aesir forever.

Injuries to her father in an attack left him in a coma.  Abby has no choice but to take refuge at Vale Hall, a mysterious school in Minnesota where nothing is quite as it seems. She soon discovers the tables have turned, and a Grendel is hunting her. But when she tries to alert the Viking Council, they accuse her of making up stories for attention just like her mother did.

Abbey is desperate to protect her father and clear her mother’s name. She goes on a dangerous quest to discover the truth. It is a journey that brings her face-to-face with some unlikely foes. This includes a Ping-Pong-playing sea monster with a wicked backhand and a dark Valkyrie fond of bingo. Abby quickly realizes that someone at the school is trying to stop her progress and destroy the Aesir for good. And only she can unravel the sinister plot before it’s too late.

    About the Author:

Sam Subity loves writing stories that explore the magic and wonder of being a kid and is thrilled to share his writing with readers everywhere–both the young in age and the young at heart.

When he’s not writing, you might find him running the trails of northern California, where the endless, winding miles past fog and ocean inspire stories of adventure and mystery.

Or he might be mowing his lawn because that’s what adults sometimes have to do.

But in either case, he’s very likely imagining himself fighting mythical creatures or at the prow of a dragon, ship feeling the wind and sea spray on his face alongside his own Viking queen and their two kids. His greatest hope is that in reading his books, you too may be transported to another place where, for a little while, you can exchange the ordinary for the extraordinary.

    The Last Shadow Warrior Review:

I love reading middle-grade fantasy mythologies, and “The Last Shadow Warrior” did not disappoint and was very entertaining!

The author did a brilliant job in narrating the story. The plot glued me to the pages from the first page. I have never read about Beowulf and only have limited knowledge about Vikings and Aesirs. Hence, reading this book was a treat as I felt I learned quite a bit of Norse Mythology. Abby is terrific in the lead as she tries to start a new chapter of her life without her dad. Thankfully, she has good friends to help her adjust and soon finds herself on a thrilling adventure as she tries to solve a mystery.

The book oozes out action, adventure, drama, and humor that would entertain the reader. The author adds many exciting moments in the story, from Abby on the run with her dad to fighting sea monsters with her friends. On the other hand, there are also humorous moments with Grimsby and Iggy. I adored Grimsby and Gwynn and loved their friendship with Abby. Similarly, I loved Iggy and Doc even though the character only appeared for a limited time. There are also suspense moments as Abby tries to figure out the mystery behind the journal and what the Grey Council is hiding. On a side note, I thought the book cover was also gorgeous!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed “The Last Shadow Warrior,” and I hope it’s the start of a beautiful series, as I cannot wait to go on another adventure with the characters.
