Eyes that Speak is a revealing, behind the scenes, through the lens perspective on some of the famous eyes that have spoken to the world. While having the honor of capturing amazing moments and events in history during the course of a thirty year photographic career, photo journalist Christy Bowe has always learned something from each of her subjects. The power of the camera has transported her to places and exposed her to situations that most people only read about.

In an intimate and personal journey that spans photographing subjects from a declared terrorist to Queen Elizabeth II, separated by only a few yards and security personnel, this book captures those moments when a subject’s eyes speak to the world through photographic images. Eyes That Speak is a compelling, pictorial look into the work of a Washington based photojournalist as she shares life lessons gained while capturing some of the most significant moments in history.

    About the Author:

BEFORE SHE JUMPED out of an airplane at 13,500 feet and earned her first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, Christy Bowe, a third-generation Washingtonian, was thrown out of Catholic school in the ninth grade for refusing to conform. She briefly attended Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. Later, she attended the University of Missouri Photo Workshop in Carthage, Missouri.

Most of her education has been on the job. In pursuit of her passion for photography, Christy earned her way into the circle of White House press photographers. Also, with support from celebrated White House reporter the late Sarah McClendon, Christy started Image Catcher News Service. She is represented by Getty Images, Zuma Press and Polaris Images. Her pictures have been featured in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and Rolling Stone.

Her corporate clients have included Harley Davidson, The National Science Foundation, The National Press Club and The National Organization for Women. Christy is currently a member of the White House Press Corps, House and Senate Press Photographers’ Gallery. Also, she is the member of White House Correspondents’ Association and White House News Photographers’ Association. She has lectured at American University, Montgomery College, and George Mason University. She has ten images preserved in the George W. Bush Presidential Library. Christy resides in Bethesda, Maryland, and continues to work as a photojournalist, currently covering her fifth U.S. President, Joseph R. Biden.

    Eyes That Speak Review:

Firstly, let me commend the author for publishing this outstanding work. This book was by far one of the most fascinating and unique books I have read recently. “Eyes that Speak” is one of those books that even those who hate to read, or even those not interested in politics, would be curious to pick up and glance through.

From Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford to Donald Trump and President Biden, the author takes us on a journey through photographs of pivotal moments that captured the world’s attention. What’s nice about this book is that the author doesn’t waste time talking about the Presidents’ life history but captures moments that make them stand out.

Moreover, I loved reading about how the author got into photography and started shooting in the political landscape. I learned about WHNPA and NPC and how the author manages to capture the moment.
Although I read the news and stay in tune with current affairs, I was surprised to recall many incidents that the author beautifully highlights over the past few decades. The book also focuses on the recent incidents of Black Lives Matter and the latest presidential elections.

Also, the author does not focus only on US Presidents. We get a span of other notable public figures and notable celebrities who also visited. Some prominent figures are the Dalai Lama, Queen Elizabeth II, Sean Connery, and the unforgettable Mother Teresa, to name a few.

Overall, “Eyes that Speak” feels like a piece of time capsule I feel proud of having in my bookshelves, as it is a book I would surely pick up ten years from now to see what the world was like over the last few years.

In Ginger Zee’s follow-up to the bestselling Natural Disaster, the ABC chief meteorologist takes readers on a much deeper journey of self discovery.

When Ginger Zee opened her life to readers in Natural Disaster, the response was enormous. She put a very relatable if surprising face on depression and has helped lessen the stigma surrounding mental health issues. But Ginger tells us, Natural Disaster was “Ginger Lite” and only scratched the surface.

In this moving follow up, Ginger shares her truest self. She spent most of her life shielding her weakness from the world all while being a professional people pleaser. Her stormy childhood, her ongoing struggles with crippling depression, her suicide attempts, and many other life experiences will resonate with readers who are likely to see themselves along the way.

In spite of its serious subject matter, Ginger’s positive, life affirming outlook comes through loud and clear. Written with great heart and quite a bit of humor, Ginger normalizes issues and challenges millions of people face every day. A Little Closer to Home will broaden the conversation around mental health at a time we need it more than ever.

    About the Author:

Ginger Zee is the Chief Meteorologist for ABC News, forecasting for and reporting on the nation’s weather from Good Morning America to World News Tonight. Zee has been on the ground before, during and after almost every major weather event and dozens of historic storms including Hurricane Katrina.

She watched as the eye of Superstorm Sandy passed over Atlantic City and then covered the devastated Jersey Shore. She was there for the 2020 California wildfires and for the unprecedented number of hurricanes on the Gulf Coast. Zee’s dedication to science began at an early age, watching powerful thunderstorms rush across Lake Michigan. Her passion for meteorology brought her to storm chase in college at Valparaiso University where she earned her bachelor of science in meteorology.

A Little Closer to Home Review:

“A Little Closer to Home” is the new memoir by ABC meteorologist Ginger Zee, and I found it entertaining and impressive.

To begin with, I didn’t know much about the author because I had not seen her on television. Yet, I could not put it down as soon as I picked up the memoir. I liked how candid the author is about her life experiences dealing with mental health, anorexia, and rape. From her parents’ divorce to her relationship with Pam, the author writes in a matter-of-fact manner where you feel like you are reading the life of a close member. Each chapter deals with a particular story of how the experiences made the author grow and deal with her inner turmoils, which was interesting.

What’s also sweet about this memoir is how the author makes the book lighthearted in a few chapters. I loved reading about Camp Hug-A-Lot and her friendship with Liz and Alysha. Similarly, some chapters also made me emotional, like how the author talks about abortion or hides her insecurities behind her smile. Some of the memorable chapters for me in the book were “It Really Doesn’t Matter and Nobody Cares” (which is so true), where the author talks about Renee and Ginger and the pageant experience. Moreover, I did not know about the concept of fire chakra until I read this book.

The author touches on subjects that made me connect with the changes I unconsciously made with my life, especially in the chapter about labels and meditation. Similarly, the author also gets personal about her relationship, like Michael and Leo, and her husband, which I thought added a nice touch.

Overall, “A Little Closer to Home” is a beautiful memoir that inspires you to look forward to life no matter how challenging it gets.

    The Romance Novel Formula Review:

If you have aspirations to write a great romance novel but don’t know how to start, you should get “The Romance Novel Formula.”

This book is the first one I have ever read that guides the reader on how to go about writing a romance novel. While the book targets romance, many key strategies apply to any genre. The author does a fantastic job organizing and categorizing the book. As such, it comes across as the perfect guide. As soon as you pick it up, you have no trouble following the directions and steps the author mentions.

She gives the fundamentals of a romance novel, with examples of modern and classic tales. She then proceeds to describe the characters, tone, atmosphere, setting, tropes, and dialogues (to name a few). I liked this book’s simplistic and interactive the author makes each chapter. She fills the chapters with exercises and examples that give you clear visibility of what to do.

Moreover, I enjoyed how the author also provides insight into what the audience looks for in a story. And  how, one has to see the story from various angles. This include the mistakes people usually make, and things to avoid. Even though I am not aspiring to be a romance novelist, I would love to use this book as a benchmark to experiment on a first draft and see success.

Overall, “The Romance Novel Formula ” is an excellent guidebook to get if you want to write a romance novel. I hope the author provides such insights even for other genres to help aspiring authors (not romance enthusiasts) write their stories.

“Namedropping in the Wings” is a light-hearted memoir of a young stage manager who became the first Theatre Sound Designer. His rise to the top of his profession covers thirty years of theatre history . The book is full of personal anecdotes, with many illustrious names like Bing Crosby, Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Andrews, to name but a few.

When just 18, David Collison secured a job at the Arts Theatre Club in London .Here the artistic director, Peter Hall, was just beginning to make a name for himself. When Peter Hall moved into the commercial theatre, he employed David on productions including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Along with a  young lighting designer, Richard Pilbrow,  David  built a recording studio in Covent Garden. They began creating sound effects for an increasing number of clients,. These included  the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the new National Theatre Company under Laurence Olivier.

“Namedropping in the Wings” will appeal to anybody who enjoys reading about celebrities and show business.

    About the Author:

David Collison’s career began in 1955 as an ASM at the Arts Theatre Club in London .  Peter Hall, the artistic director discovered that David had a particular aptitude for spot-cueing sound effects on 78 rpm discs. This led to an interest in recording sound effects . He eventually became the first  Sound Designer in the theatre. In 1962, he received a poster credit for sound.

Moreover, during the 1970s and 1980s, he was sound designer on more than sixty musicals in London’s West End, including Fiddler on the Roof, Blitz, etc.

He was also Sound Designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company under Sir Peter Hall and for the National Theatre Company under Sir Laurence Olivier. As a consultant, he designed permanent sound systems for many theatres and concert halls in the UK and around the world.

    Namedropping in the Wings Review:

“Namedropping in the Wings” is a lovely, light-hearted memoir that dazzled me and took me back to the golden days of theatre, and I loved reading it!

Firstly, I felt this book was so refreshing because of its theme. Most of the memoirs that I read recently focus on hard-hitting topics that are very serious. Hence, it was delightful to read a book about the author’s role in the life of the theatre and how he survived in the industry when it was gaining recognition.

I adored the way the author told the story. He narrates his life with such a charm and flair that I felt reading a story tale. The author transports you back to when celebrities like Orson Wells, Benjamin Britten, and Ginger Rogers we all prominent. Each chapter has something new that the author experiences that made the book fascinating. Many moments were memorable for me, like the author working with Ginger Rogers, The Exhibition for Shakespeare’s birthday, and opening the National Theatre. The author also brings the backdrop of the theatre to life with the details, from Broadway to Las Vegas. On a side note, I adored Mum Jenkins and her role in the author’s life by treating him with respect.

However, that isn’t to say that this book is only sunshine and rainbows. The author also talks about the fluctuating life of the theatre, and its ups and downs, where they had to face debt at times. It was interesting to see how the author tackled all these situations.

Overall, if you want to read a different memoir that is breezy and charming, please do check out “Namedropping in the Wings.”

Butterfly Awakens depicts the story of the extraordinary transformation of a forty-something Italian American attorney as she moves through unimaginable grief and sadness watching her beloved mother lose her battle to breast cancer. This tumultuous life experience shifts her world, causing her to question her life choices and opening her up to her soul’s calling. Nocero brings readers along on her journey through a dark night of the soul as she deals with the grieving process, a toxic work environment, and intense stress that results in depression, anxiety, and an acquired somatic nervous disorder called tinnitus. Through it all, she never gives up, instead looking for the help she needs to start to heal and find her light. In the end, like the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly, this story is a beautiful love letter that honors Nocero’s mother’s legacy while detailing the awakening of her own.

There are many stories about breast cancer and grief, but none are quite like this one. Throughout her tale, Nocero pulls the reader deep into her story through the intensity of her emotions; and in the end, after resigning from her career as a federal prosecutor due to a toxic administration, she searches for the lighthouse she saw in a vision when her mother died. Embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage on El Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain to get to the lighthouse at Cap Finisterre, she sets out to wake up and live again; the butterfly connection and stark honesty of her writing offers readers important lessons learned from moving through grief so that each person can shine their light again.

    About the Author:

    Butterfly Awakens Review:

“Butterfly Awakens” is a heartwarming memoir that motivates and inspires readers to live their lives to the fullest.

Firstly, I commend the author for describing herself so nicely in the tale. I could connect to the character on so many levels while I read the story. There are moments where we try to live the best of our abilities, but sometimes, life gets in the way, and we lose track of how to get our groove back.

The author beautifully narrates the incidents that shaped her life after her mother and how she rediscovered herself. She uses the example of the butterfly and metamorphosis in her life, and I could not put the book down. Moreover, I loved the inspirational quotations that the author includes from celebrities like Robin Williams, Oprah, and Rumi. I also took a few activities, like |the 21 days to break the habit of complaining” in my daily life for improvement.

Moments that stood out in the story were when she had nightmares post her mother’s death and how incidents like the aftermath of the shooting impacted her. What’s lovely about the story is how the author adds a touch of humor, sadness, and even some thrilling moments to the story. The scenes where they talk about the hospital quarters made me chuckle, while the parts of the author’s passport at the airport unnerved me for a moment. Even the supporting characters like Frank and Denise added nicely to the tale. The author sets the story on the backdrop of Miami and even mentions the locations charmingly.

Overall, “Butterfly Awakens” is a beautiful memoir that I encourage everyone to read to get inspired.

Gina Troisi’s father moved out when she was five years old, but before he left, he insisted on telling her about his various affairs with prostitutes, with her mother’s friends, and finally, with his secretary, Brenda, whom he had decided to marry.

By the time she reached adolescence, on a search for respite from her father’s verbal abuse and Brenda’s psychological torment, Gina spent hours doing Jane Fonda’s workouts, smoked cigarettes instead of eating food, became obsessed with her thinness, and with the notion of fading away. She began to find solace in restlessness drinking hallucinogenic mushroom tea and inhaling crushed pills and powders, perching herself on the periphery of danger again and again.

As an adult, when she finally glimpsed a better life for herself, her grandfather, who had been a surrogate father to her, became terminally ill, and she fell in love with John, a stranger who was utterly familiar, but who was addicted to heroin. She moved from New Hampshire to California, crossing the country in an attempt to alleviate her self-destructive tendencies, but found herself pulled back to New Hampshire, to John, a man with whom, despite his struggle, she could not deny the sense of home she felt. But what would it cost for a girl to run wildly and recklessly into womanhood, making instant, temporary homes? And would she ever find home within herself?

    About the Author:

Gina Troisi received an MFA in creative nonfiction from The University of Maine’s Stonecoast MFA Program in 2009. Her work has appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies, including Fourth Genre, The Gettysburg Review, Fugue, Under the Sun, Flyway: Journal of Writing and Environment, and elsewhere. Her stories and essays have been recognized as finalists in several contests, including the 2020 Iron Horse Literary Review Trifecta Award in Fiction, the 2018 New Letters Publication Award in Fiction, the 2012 Iowa Review Award in Creative Nonfiction, the 2012 Bellevue Literary Review Nonfiction Prize, Bellingham Review’s 2012 Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction, and the 2009 Eric Hoffer Award for prose. She received an Honorable Mention for American Literary Review’s Creative Nonfiction Contest, 2018, and for Gulf Coast’s 2012 Nonfiction Prize. She served as Writer-in-Residence 2012 at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Gina teaches writing at Southern New Hampshire University. She also offers academic tutoring as well as one-on-one coaching for creative writers. Her debut memoir, The Angle of Flickering Light, which was a semi-finalist for the Robert C. Jones Prize for Short Prose, 2020, a finalist for the 2018 Autumn House Press Full-Length Contest, a semi-finalist for Zone 3 Press Creative Nonfiction Book Award, 2015, a finalist for the 2013 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Narrative Nonfiction Prize and the 2012 Autumn House Press Nonfiction Prize, and was awarded Second Place in Memoir for Southwest Writers Competition in 2012, is forthcoming from Vine Leaves Press in April of 2021. She is currently working on a novel-in-stories.

The Angle 0f Flickering Light Review:

“The Angle of Flickering Light” is a profound, emotional memoir that talks about how a person’s childhood with toxic parents affects their growing up.

Firstly, I commend the author for getting personal with the story. She doesn’t shy away from the unfortunate details and hostile environment of her upbringing. My heart went out to the author from the beginning since she met Brenda. Brenda got on my nerves, and I despised her with a passion. In some scenes, she is very creepy, like when she abuses the author’s mother or talks about getting rid of the author and her sisters. It was strange yet fascinating to read about the toxic relationship she had with her father and how his actions indirectly affected her in the long run.

Moreover, the book was intense because each part felt like a different moment of the author’s life. My favorite part of the book is when the author bones with Krista over what happened to Nanu and the scenes when she sees her grandparent’s photos. Similarly, the author also realistically portrays how her life changed when she fell in love with a drug addict. I found her scenes with John fascinating, and I also appreciated the author for writing about John’s rehab journey.

Perhaps the only minor critique I have of the book is the author splitting the chapters more evenly. There are only a few chapters in the book, and some seem to be bigger than others. On a side note, I also liked the movie references to “Mommie Dearest” and “The Shining.”

Overall, “The Angle of Flickering Light” is a lovely memoir that gives us a snippet of how the author has struggled to regain her self-esteem and mature from her experiences.

At thirty-one, Kirsten has just returned to San Francisco from a bohemian year in Rome, ready to pursue a serious career as a writer and eventually, she hopes, marriage and family. When she meets Steve Beckwith, a handsome and successful attorney, she begins to see that future materialize more quickly than she’d dared to expect.

Twenty-two years later, Steve has become someone quite different from the man Kirsten first met. Unemployed and addicted to opioids, he uses money and their two children to emotionally blackmail her. The couple separates but, just after their divorce is finalized, Steve is diagnosed with colon cancer and dies within the year, leaving Kirsten with $1.5 million in debts from properties that are no longer hers. It’s only then that she finally understands: The man she married was a needy, addictive person wrapped in a shiny package.

As she fights toward recovery, Kirsten begins to receive communications from Steve in the afterlife—leading her on an unexpected path to forgiveness. The Ghost Marriage is her story of discovery: that life isn’t limited to the tangible reality we experience on this earth, and that our worst adversaries can become our greatest teachers. This is a book about life after divorce and life after death. It’s a story of how forgiveness is the best revenge.

    The Ghost Marriage Review:

What do you do when you feel you have the perfect marriage, but things don’t turn out the way you had hoped? I thought “The Ghost Marriage” was a gripping memoir about how the author’s life changes after marriage.

The main reason why I enjoyed this story was that you see the author grow as a person between the beginning and the end. Your feelings for the author and Steve change throughout the story, and you realize that they are all human, and life goes on.

The author also writes the emotions in detail. I couldn’t put the book down when the author gets raw with her feelings and describes the paranoia she felt when she thought Stephen tapped her phone and was monitoring her and when she has to adapt to the uncertainty of what will happen.

However, the book is not all gloom and doom about divorce. The author also adds some positive moments, like meeting Mike and feeling a sense of optimism. Similarly, I also liked the author’s relationship with Gregory and even Eddie, for that matter. The author writes the characters so personally that you immediately root for them. After reading some of the awful things Steve had done just to beat her in court, I felt terrible for her. I also liked the plot surrounding the Riordan foundation and how it is not as perfect as it appears.

Perhaps the only thing I would have liked to read more was the children’s perception and adaption to the divorce. It would have been interesting to see how Bronte and Amory adapted to the changes.

Overall, “The Ghost Marriage” is a fascinating memoir that invested me in characters personally.

    Spirituality, Healing and Me Review:

“Spirituality, Healing and Me” is an inspiring self-help book that deals with how anyone can bring spirituality into their lives, and I thought it was thought-provoking.

There are many aspects of this book that I admire the author for writing. I realized I was practicing and believed in many of the author’s principles as I read it. It was beautiful how the author categorized them into sections and portrayed their importance. One of my favorite sections in the book was how the author talks about reading the universe’s messages and the various laws, like the law of action and compensation. I also liked some details the author includes, like bullet points on how to view things inside and out and work on moral values. If you follow some of these principles, I’m sure your stress and anxiety will reduce.

Moreover, the author covers many topics, from selflessness and karma to understanding your psyche, introspecting, and being mindful of your actions. When you read this book, you realize how easy it is to follow the principles. You don’t need to take particular medicine or do something expensive to be a better person. If you have patience, humility, and a better understanding of life, things will fall into place. It also deals with how to let go of your ego and look at the bigger picture.

However, the only minor criticism of the book is that I felt the passages were repetitive from time to time. Other than that, this was an excellent self-help book!

Overall, if more people read this book, the world would be a better place, as we would be more empathetic towards others and improve our health and lifestyle.

How do you become an expert of your own grief when a loved one dies?

Erik Lewin shares how he turned the profound loss of his mother and father into life-changing growth, with intimacy, warmth and humor. He offers a no-nonsense, commonsense way to create your personal path to acceptance of your loss.

Lewin became an expert in his grief experience twice over, encouraging readers to find their own way, as no two lives or losses are the same. He eschews expert opinions and general analyses of grieving in favor of common sense, letting you know you are not alone in how you’re feeling. He shares how he turned his loss into an impetus to personal change. A former criminal defense lawyer, Lewin is now a full time writer and standup comedian.

“This Is How I Spell Grief” takes a counter-intuitive approach to self-help; there are no eight simple exercises to get over it. Instead, you gradually learn to address grief on your own terms, to make true and lasting peace with your loss.

    About the Author:

Erik Lewin is the author of three books – This is How I Spell GriefAnimal Endurance, and Son of Influence – as well as numerous essays published in Ponder Review, GNU Journal, David Magazine, Real Vegas Magazine &Literate Ape.

This Is How I Spell Grief  Review:

“This Is How I Spell Grief” is a book that I feel everyone should read, irrespective of whether they have experienced grief or not.

Firstly, I commend the author for executing this book. There are many aspects of this book that I resonate with, mainly because I have experienced them living on my own the last few years. I wish I had read this book at a younger age to have controlled my anger when I was young and appreciated the finer things in life.

Moreover, I appreciate how personal the author became in some passages. He talks about grief, his father passing away young, and losing his mother to cancer. It’s very accurate that he mentions that the richness lies in the little moments, and we need to appreciate every moment we have with our loved ones. Even if it is just for a few minutes, we should appreciate our loved ones bringing love into our lives and making it worthwhile.

The author beautifully tells you how the world goes on, and we only have a limited time in this world. Hence, be kind to one another. I also love how the author doesn’t sugarcoat anything. He tells how experiencing loss could be good, as it gives your perspective. The author has a simple and poignant way of bringing forth the key points, and I liked how he subcategorized each chapter nicely. I particularly enjoyed reading about the caregivers as well.

Overall, “This Is How I Spell Grief: A Guide to Healing from Loss and Finding Fulfillment” is a must-have non-fiction book, in my opinion, because I feel that people would get tolerant and have a sense of understanding after reading it.

“In African Icons, Baptiste engages in the hard work of unveiling the myths about the African continent to young readers .This is a great beginner’s guide to pre-colonial Africa.”
—Ibram X. Kendi, National Book Award-winning author of Stamped from the Beginning and How to Be an Antiracist

Meet ten real-life kings, queens, inventors, scholars, and visionaries who lived in Africa thousands of years ago and changed the world.

Black history began long ago with the many cultures and people of the African continent.

Through portraits of ten heroic figures, author Tracey Baptiste takes readers on a journey across Africa to meet some of the great leaders and thinkers. Their vision built a continent and shaped the world.

Illustrator Hillary D. Wilson’s brilliant portraits accompany each profile, along with vivid, information. There are filled landscapes, maps, and graphics for readers to pore over and return to again and again.

     Author Bio:

I have always loved books. My favorite, was an oversized complete Grimm’s Fairy Tales with beautiful illustrations.  I lost them when my family moved to the United States. My fascination for  the stories of the tailor who went up against a giant, and clever Hans, who wasn’t so clever. Also I liked well stories of the traditional princess stories.

When I was about thirteen, after spending a summer in the library reading Paul Zindel and Judy Blume  , I decided o be a writer. I didn’t decide what I wanted to write until I read “The Friends” by Rosa Guy.

I had recently moved to Brooklyn, NY, and the book spoke to my situation precisely. It remains one of my favorite books. I started writing for children then, and never stopped. I had early interest from publishers from the moment I began submitting stories at the age of 21, but I didn’t put in the work necessary for publishing until my late twenties. “Angel’s Grace” was  while I was on maternity leave with my first child. The inspiration came from my mother (the redhead) and my husband. Because I have very young children, I work when they sleep, which, sadly, is very little.

    African Icons Review:

“African Icons” is a wonderful and must-read for anyone who wants to know more about African culture and history and was an eye-opener for me.

As the other mentions in the introduction, when people think of Black History, it is often limited to enslavement, Civil War, and Civil Rights. This book is like a beautiful encyclopedia where we learn more about the land, culture, and dynasties spanned over centuries. As someone who loves reading about civilizations, I was immersed in the book entirely and found it fascinating.

I had no idea about so many tidbits of information until I read this book. For instance, even though I love reading Egyptian Civilization and the Pharoah, I was unaware of many details about Imhotep and Aesop. Similarly, I did not even know that Menes was Egypt’s first Pharoah until I read this book. The author details each Icon in a simple manner that would attract the attention of a reader of any age. Some sections that stood out for me were the reading of Terence, Mansa Musa, and Tin Hinan.

But the author doesn’t talk of just civilizations. We get many more exciting details about places like Timbuktu and how it became a stop for trade and how the grandeur of these dynasties came to an end. Reading this book was bittersweet because you feel the African culture is vibrant yet sad that history got lost over time.

Also, I must credit the breathtaking illustrations that complement the book. Hillary D. Wilson did a fantastic job of bringing the book to life with the powerful images of the Icons.

Overall, if you love reading about civilizations, you must add “African Icons” to your collection.
