This coming-of-age middle grade debut novel follows an Arab American girl named Yasmeen as she moves to San Antonio with her family and navigates finding friendship–and herself.

When twelve-year-old Yasmeen Khoury moves with her family to San Antonio, all she wants to do is fit in. But her classmates in Texas are nothing like her friends in the predominantly Arab neighborhood back in Detroit where she grew up. Almost immediately, Yasmeen feels like the odd girl out. And as she faces middle school mean girls and tries to make new friends, she feels more alone than ever before.

Then Yasmeen meets her neighbor, Ayelet Cohen, a first-generation Israeli American. As the two girls grow closer, Yasmeen is grateful to know someone who understands what it feels like when your parents’ idea of home is half a world away.

Then Yasmeen’s grandmother moves in after her home in Jerusalem is destroyed. Now Yasmeen and Ayelet must grapple with how much closer the events of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are than they’d realized.  Yasmeen begins to develop her own understandings of home, heritage, and most importantly, herself.  Can the two girls learn there’s more that brings them together than might tear them apart . And that peace begins with them?

    About the Author:

Wishing Upon the Same Stars Review:

Firstly, I was captivated by the author’s portrayal of the complex emotions experienced by Yasmeen after her move to San Antonio. The author skillfully crafts scenes that depict Yasmeen’s internal struggle as she navigates a fractured friendship, the pressure to maintain a façade, and her yearning for acceptance in a diverse community. The novel effectively delves into themes of identity, assimilation, and the challenges of maintaining relationships amidst cultural differences, creating a seamless blend of these elements in a compelling middle-grade story.

Secondly, I found Yasmeen to be a remarkable protagonist. Her aspirations to bridge the gap between different cultures and languages resonated deeply with me. Throughout the book, she encounters bullying from the unpleasant Hallie and the Sapphires, experiences her first crush with Carlos, grapples with a complicated relationship with Waverly, and, most notably, forms a special bond with Ayelet.

Speaking of which, the author skillfully explores the multifaceted dynamics between Ayelet and Yasmeen. The author depicts the tensions arising from their families’ differences due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict authentically. I admire the author’s adept handling of this subject matter, highlighting the notion that even parents can be fallible and that sometimes one must stand their ground to do what feels right.

Some of the most memorable moments in the story include witnessing the San Antonio Rodeo and Yasmeen’s discovery of her place in the Math Lab. Additionally, I also adored Sitti, who added depth and warmth to the narrative. Even Sarah was notable during the Spelling Bee scenes.

Overall, “Wishing Upon the Same Stars” is a beautiful middle-grade novel that exemplifies the importance of supporting and celebrating each other’s accomplishments, regardless of our diverse upbringings and backgrounds. This book truly enchanted me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A fun-filled vacation on Marco Island. A humanitarian worker with a passion for jewelry making. A mystery that will keep you guessing.
Vacations and Victims is the 15,000-word prequel to the Sapphire Beach Cozy Mystery Series.

Desperate to escape a blustery Boston winter, Connie visits her charismatic and glamorous aunt, Concetta Belmonte, a former Hollywood movie star, who arranged for them a first-class getaway on Marco Island in southwest Florida. The two women, along with their best friends, are ready for a weekend of sun, sand, and relaxation, but their plans are interrupted by a murder Connie is compelled to investigate.

If you enjoy page-turner cozy mysteries, loveable characters, and palm trees swaying in the breeze, you’ll love the Sapphire Beach Cozy Mystery Series.

    About the Author:

Angela K. Ryan, author of the Sapphire Beach Cozy Mystery Series, writes clean, feel-good stories that uplift and inspire, with mysteries that will keep you guessing.

When she is not writing, Angela enjoys the outdoors, especially kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, snowshoeing, and skiing. She lives near Boston and loves the change of seasons in New England, but, like her main character, she looks forward to brief escapes to the white, sandy beaches of southwest Florida, where her mother resides.

Angela dreams of one day owning a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel like Ginger, but isn’t home enough to take care of one. So, for now, she lives vicariously through her main character, Connie.

    Vacations & Victims Review:

Firstly, I found the dynamics between Connie and her Aunt Concetta to be quite enjoyable. The author skillfully portrays their camaraderie, and I appreciated their protective nature towards their friend Beth and their determination to help clear her name.

Secondly, I was particularly drawn to the captivating drama between Curt and Beth, which the author cleverly weaved into a murder mystery. The story presents several potential suspects, keeping the reader engaged as Connie delves into the investigation while on her vacation in Marco Island. With its short length and fast-paced nature, the book never has a dull moment.

Moreover, I was pleasantly surprised by the author’s ability to keep me guessing the identity of the killer, despite the limited number of suspects.

However, the only drawback is that the plot occasionally falters as it alternates between scenes of Connie and Concetta enjoying their vacation and their pursuit of clues. While I am a fan of cozy mysteries, I found it slightly awkward to have detailed descriptions of Connie and Concetta’s leisure activities such as jetskiing interspersed with their investigative efforts.

Nevertheless, I consider “Vacations and Victims” to be a delightful prequel to the Sapphire Beach Cozy Mystery series. It piqued my interest, prompting me to pick up and delve into the series eagerly.

The five partners who own the small town book store The Paper Pirate have two issues to worry.. There is the looming deadline to pay off a balloon mortgage . In addition  a menacing stealthy crook who systematically searches first the shop, then each of their homes. He takes nothing and barely leaves traces of his presence As such, the police can’t be of much help, and simply promise to keep an eye on Charlie Santorelli, Lavinia “Vinnie” Holcomb, Al Rockleigh, Felicia Cocolo and Lenora Stern. It’s a mystery to them but the reader knows that Rick Foster, a shady rare-books dealer and his sidekick Nina Bartov are on the hunt for a particular old volume that sits unnoticed on a shelf in

The Paper Pirate’s used book section. It’s an obscure early work of the not-so successful author Benjamin Conway, and it’s badly defaced. But a very wealthy man is willing to pay Rick a half a million dollars for it. Seems an ancestor of his eluded the henchmen of a nineteenth-century dictator by escaping to New York. And  he eventually took refuge in the northeastern Pennsylvania countryside. Before he was captured and killed, he’d scribbled as much evidence of the tyrant’s sins . And he could fit into the blank spaces of a copy of The Stargazer at Dawn . He then hid it where he hoped his comrades would find it. They never did.

The five friends also are members of a writers’ group, and each of them has a secret. One is penning an erotic novel on the sly, another hides a painful estrangement with an only child. And a deadly teenaged mistake causes a third to sabotage her every chance at happiness in the present. A partner who claims to be unpublished actually is a one-hit-wonder with a thirty-year-old best-selling novel followed by a crippling literary failure. The last has a family with criminal connections—he’s spent half a lifetime avoiding them.

    About the Author:

Dawn McIntyre is a New Jersey native and long-time resident of rural Pennsylvania. After years of remodeling houses and working in corporate America, she began devoting more time to her true passion–building with words. The result, so far, has been a portfolio of short stories and novels.

Among them are stories about a young girl struggling to emerging from the shadow of an abusive mother to discover the rest of the world and her place in it, a teen who escapes her stifling extended family to start fresh in the home of her estranged father–a man who realizes too late how much he wants the daughter he left behind, and a thirty-something journalist who discovers the illicit secrets of a historic figure he’s researching and must face a decision to reveal and profit from them, or to conceal and protect the reputations of long-dead people he’s come to admire and respect.

The story of a middle-aged woman who impulsively reaches out to offer comfort to a guilt-ridden stranger and finds that her good deed has only dredged up misery from her own past followed a quirky tale of a young couple threatened by a hex visited upon them by a jealous ex-lover. The twice-told yarn about a literary grave robber planning to plagiarize a story entrusted to her by an adoring fan was written in response to a prompt suggested by a friend, as was the all-dialogue historical heart-to-heart between a young gay man and his mischievous aunt.

Her first book brought to life an ornery, twentysomething woman, viewed during the summer that changed her life, and her second, self-published novel addressed the prevalence, stupidity and tenacity of prejudice. The cozy mystery, The Paper Pirate, published by Running Wild Press, will make its debut on November 8, 2022.

McIntyre founded, along with two fellow authors, a writers’ workshop in 2013 that met at the Hawley Library until the Covid pandemic necessitated a switch to virtual gatherings. She continues to write fiction populated by richly nuanced characters in deceptively simple, familiar settings.

    The Paper Pirate Review:

“The Paper Pirate” is a fun, cozy-mystery themed story with charming characters that will make it enjoyable! The plot is short and simple, and initially, I was skeptical about whether I would get bored. A bookstore is in trouble. The owners, a group of friends, must find ways to save it. But, we have two villains who realize there is a valuable book in the store that they need to get their hands on. Sounds simple, right? Yet, the author writes the bond between the characters so beautifully that you don’t want to stop reading about them.I loved Felicia, Al, Vinnie, Charlie, and Lenora. Choosing one over the other is tough as they all bring something new. The author writes each of them distinctly, highlighting their desires, frustrations, and uncertainties. The tale has exciting, dramatic moments, like tensions between Al and Vinnie or Lenora and Jason. I found Vinnie and Charlie to be the most complex. Some moments shocked me, like when Lenora talked about Eric. The characters face personal struggles while coping with relationships and solving problematic situations, like their determination to protect the bookstore. My heart went out to all of them! Moreover, I loved how the author showcased the love for books with the theme, where we see how our characters try to pull money to save the store—reading this tale in an age where bookstores and libraries close in real life was heartwarming. Each character finds solace in books, and some scenes are endearing, like when they call other book enthusiasts to share their love for books. The plot, in itself, was fun, yet it could have been better. However, the end surprised me, as I did not expect it. Overall, “The Paper Pirate” is a fun, cozy mystery.

In the distant future, a genetic plague has separated humanity in two –Subterraneans who live in underground burrows to protect their health, and strong surface-dwelling Omniterraneans.

That is until she’s offered the chance of a lifetime to study the population’s broken genetic code, fix the divide and reunite the world once again.

But when a new virus turns fatal for the Omnits, Zuzan must find a cure or humanity won’t simply remain separate, it will become extinct.

With enemies on all sides, Zuzan must hold on to the light at the end of the tunnel – or risk the world falling into darkness.

    Burrowed Review:

“Burrowed” is a gripping science fiction dystopian novel with promising characters surrounding a rich world, and I enjoyed reading it.The story’s highlight is Zuzan, her journey, and her connections with the rest of the cast. Zuzan is a solid and empathetic character, and you see various layers to her as she helps the children get better and figure out her place in life. A lot of the supporting characters also make the plot strong. For instance, I enjoyed the temperamental feelings that Zuzan faces with Crick, Griffith, and Nukleo (I particularly enjoyed Griffith). Similarly, even Maddelyn was interesting, as she appears sporadically but triggers some of the incidents in the tale with her behavior. Moreover, the author also adds a touch of romance where I warmed up to Zuzan and Ringol. The two of them don’t get off to the best start, and I was intrigued with how the author progressed their relationship, especially towards the climax. Also, I found myself intrigued with the world-building as we see Subterraneans and the Omniterraneans and the Omnit Rebellion that takes place. Some scenes shocked me, like the horrors she faces at Woynauld Military Academy. Other memorable scenes were Zuzan’s initiation speech and Optotech Hahn examining and changing her life. The author adds some nice twists that you don’t expect that shock and betray Zuzan too. However, the only downside to the story is that the pacing staggers in the second half. The first half is a whirlwind as we see Zuzan facing unspeakable challenges. But, the excitement in the second half comes down for a while and again picks up. While I enjoyed the medical aspects in the second half, I would have also liked some more danger and excitement.Overall, “Burrowed” is a gripping dystopian novel worth checking out.

Her ex is hellbent on destroying her. How far will she go to stop him?

Vanessa and Curtis have just moved to an idyllic house in the seaside town of Whitstable. Their life there is wonderful, until Vanessa’s ex-boyfriend Hayden shows up out of the blue.

Hayden is not only brash and unpredictable with a warped sense of humour, he also seems intent on making life very difficult for Vanessa, who hasn’t seen him since she was sixteen.

As Hayden causes more and more disruption in their lives, Curtis begins to realise that he has some kind of bizarre hold on Vanessa.

And when she suggests a plan to remove Hayden from their lives forever, Curtis becomes convinced she’s hiding some big secret from her past.

But has Vanessa underestimated how dangerous and unpredictable Hayden is? How far will he go to get what he wants? And how far will she go to stop her perfect life from being destroyed?

The Visit is a gripping psychological thriller with satisfying twists and turns that will keep readers enthralled till the very end.

    About the Author:

Robert was born in 1979 and lives in Kent with his wife, children, and bonkers dalmatian, Dexter.

He ran a private investigation agency for over fifteen years, dealing in cases that involved breach of contract claims, commercial debt recovery, and process serving. Robert’s agency also specialised in people tracing; so much of his work revolved around tracking down debtors, dealing in adoption matters, and locating missing persons. At times, he worked on some pretty bizarre cases and dealt with plenty of interesting and sometimes colourful individuals.

Since 2014, Robert has worked self-employed in the pet care industry, and is a keen trail runner, mountain biker and kayaker.

Robert has a huge passion for screenwriting for many years and started writing novels during the first lockdown.

    The Visit Review:

What I enjoyed about the story is how unpredictable the author made it. Initially, you think the story will be a familiar tale of how someone from Vanessa’s past comes into her life. Yes, we have that, but the story is much more! You have psychic friends, people who blackmail, people vowing revenge, and others who come into the canvas and shake the story. The author even writes Vanessa and Curtis in such a way that makes you study the characters and figure out what is happening. Even Delphine and Hayden sparked the story! Moreover, the author takes the story in a direction you don’t expect. You have demonic rituals, false identities, and so much more happening, to name a few. The story is fast-paced, and it is hard to put down.Perhaps the only downside is that the story initially staggers where you feel nothing is happening. The story picks up when Hayden comes into the picture.Overall, “The Visit” is a fun thriller worth checking out.

The suspicious death of an elderly widow on the grounds of the HomePort Estate sends shock waves through the seaside resort of Provincetown.

Wrongly accused of the murder, beloved entertainer Helena Handbasket forsakes her oceanside mansion and goes undercover to track down those responsible. Aided by her chosen family, she uses her comic genius and extraordinary talent for impersonation to navigate a maze of deception and greed that includes a museum break-in, thefts of iconic artwork, and some shady liaisons. As the investigation gains momentum, the past increasingly influences the present, exposing hidden secrets and imperiling Helena’s well-heeled existence.

Set amid Cape Cod’s natural beauty and vibrant summer season, this captivating sequel to The HomePort Journals unfolds against the backdrop of a small town struggling to balance its newfound celebrity with a cherished way of life.

    About the Author:

    A. C. Burch’s debut novel was the award-winning The HomePort Journals. He is also the author of a short story collection entitled A Book of Revelations.

His first decade as a Provincetown resident was spent living in a condominium where drama reigned supreme (see the short story, Even in Death in A Book of Revelations). In 1997, he bought an 1881 Cape in dire need of renovation and has been working on it ever since. The prior owner, whose family owned the property for 92 years, described it as haunted by the ghost of her grandmother, who was born, lived, and died in the house. Any odd occurrence is always attributed to “Bridey,” who was said to have regularly chased painter Charles Hawthorne and his students off her dune-top property. No doubt, the spectral denizens of HomePort owe their presence to her example.

    The Distance Between Us Review:

I didn’t know this book was part of a series, but I want to read the others! This book transported me back to the days of “Murder, She Wrote,” with its captivating protagonist, Helena, who solves crimes just like Jessica Fletcher in Cabot Cove. The author’s writing style and the diverse cast of characters make this cozy murder mystery novel truly stand out.

Moreover, I was particularly impressed by the book’s representation of the LGBTQIA+ community. It was refreshing to see such diversity and inclusion in a murder mystery, with gay couples and transgender characters like Helena working together to solve a mystery. Helena is a fantastic character, not only because of her quick wit but also her ability to connect with anyone. I particularly enjoyed her interactions with Melody, Mavis, Quincy, and especially Butch. The author skillfully develops the romance between Butch and Helena in the book’s second half, which adds an extra sparkle to the story.

Regarding the murder mystery, I constantly guessed who could be behind C.J.’s death and the museum vandalism and thefts. The author introduces several potential suspects, leaving readers wondering about their motives. I was on the edge of my seat during scenes like Helena falling overboard or Mavis encountering a helicopter targeting her for harm. The author also adds excitement by eliminating some of the suspects and incorporating red herrings, which makes the book even more entertaining.
On a side note, the author’s writing style is beautiful and unique.

Also, the author writes the tale like a painting, where you appreciate each sentence. Instead of traditional chapter numbers, the book uses headings and subheadings, adding a fun touch to the reading experience.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading “The Distance Between Us,” and now I’m eager to explore other books by this author.

When a nervous bride jilts the viscount at the altar, Hudson is meant to find and return her to his employer posthaste. He is not supposed to fall in love. Or kiss his employer’s bride. Or say yes when Tabitha makes an indecent proposal that will ruin them both…

    Chasing the Bride Review:

I have not read any previous books in the “Lords in Love” series, but I had no trouble enjoying this book! I thoroughly enjoyed the captivating story because of its standout character, Tabitha. She stands apart from the other heroines in the genre because she is kind-natured yet strong. I love how she selflessly sacrifices everything for her ailing father’s happiness, showcasing her incredible devotion. She knows she is strong enough to move out of Viscount Oldfield’s life if necessary, but she only stays on for her father.

Moreover, the author skillfully weaves a beautiful romance between the two protagonists. The conflicting emotions experienced by both Tabitha and Hudson as their love deepened added a layer of complexity that kept me engrossed. Yes, the story gets steamy sometimes, but I really enjoyed the banter the two share and their conversations about life. Hudson is also an intriguing man, growing up in relatively poor circumstances, yet how it made him strong-willed as an adult.

My favorite moments in the tale are in the river, the botanical gardens, or even the sweet moments at the livestock tents. The author writes Oldfield nicely as a sleazy villain, where you feel nothing but disgust as you read of his behavior.

Additionally, the author expertly injects tense moments, such as the events at the altar in the church or the climactic scenes, leaving readers eagerly wondering what decisions our beloved protagonists will make. You can predict how the story will turn out if you have read historical romances. Yet, the author writes the story and its characters so charmingly that you still read to the end and enjoy it.

Overall, I enjoyed reading “Chasing the Bride” and am excited to read other books in the series!

    About the Author:

Conrad Jones spent 12 years working for the biggest quick service restaurant brand in the world.

On March 20th 1993 the IRA terrorist organization bombed the shopping center outside the restaurant he was managing that day. That incident sparked the story of ‘Soft Target’.

    The Journey Home Review:

“The Journey Home” is a satisfying conclusion to the series and equally as good as the first two books.

While the second book was probably my favorite in the series, I enjoyed how the author concluded the series in this book. Once again, I loved the multiple storylines, where Jet targetting Kalu and Kissie on one end, Beb and Amira on a dangerous journey to go home, and Isime and Oke adjusting to their life back in Monguno. This book stood apart from the other two because of Oke and Isime. I adored the humor the author added to their dialogues and how lighthearted some of their conversations were, even amidst the chaos.

Moreover, the author also adds a touch of adventure to each chapter. You think the horrors of the previous two books are over, but our characters are always on the lookout and encounter life-threatening situations. Beb and Amira’s story was also interesting, and I enjoyed Omar as the supporting lead. Similarly, Nazia’s storylines were heartbreaking, and seeing how raw the author described the scenes was shocking.

The only reason why I didn’t enjoy this as much as book two was because of Kalu’s storyline. The earlier books were gripping because they tackled realistic situations that the characters faced, like amidst the Russo-Ukranian War or the challenges they faced in Africa, including a potential pandemic. However, the arc with Jet, while entertaining as it was, felt a tad fictional (like reading a James Bond novel) and didn’t resonate with the series’ theme. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the storyline and found the scenes very entertaining.

Overall, you must read the entire series in order because they are gripping, wonderful, and makes you appreciate life and family. It is one of my favorite series I have read this year!

    The Journey Back Review:

This series is just so hard to put down! After reading the first book, I was excited to get my hands on “Journey Back” to see how the Sammi family saga continued.

The author outdid himself in the plot, and I loved the multiple storylines. On the one hand, Kalu has an imposter as a son who has returned and is involved in shady activities, and you wonder how much torment Kalu cant take. On the other hand, we have Kissie, who has grown and has her life in danger in Chornobyl amidst the war between the Ukrainians and Russians. Then, we also learn that Oke and Isime are alive in Mongumo and at risk because of a new pandemic eradicating their friends and family. But what happened to Beb? Well, he has his storyline that is also gripping with family drama! The author wonderfully toggles between each arc and progresses it so beautifully!

It’s hard to choose which storyline I liked because I enjoyed them all, although I loved Kalu and Kissie. I loved how the author portrayed the various emotions Kalu faces, knowing what happened to Beb. Similarly, the author makes the story relevant by adding elements of the Eusso-Ukranian War into the plot. He portrays the scenes so realistically that I felt like I was reading entries of a journalist who witnesses the tragedies happening there. I loved this book more than the first, and I don’t know how the author would top it off in the sequel. On a side note, Katouh was also sizzling as a supporting character, and I hope he is more prominent in the next book!

Overall, “Journey Back” is a fantastic continuation, and if you haven’t read the Journey Novels series yet, you must check it out!

    Creatures of Chaos Review:

“Creatures of Chaos” is a fun start to the “Chaos” series, and I enjoyed the concept.

Firstly, I loved how creative the author got with the tale, and I felt I was reading a mix of “Stranger Things” meets “One Tree Hill.” The author does a lovely job of blending young adult drama with paranormal elements, and it was fun to see how our protagonists tackled their newfound powers. Each character stands out with their unique personality and ability, and it was a treat to see how they reacted to the situation and the villain who also learns of it and targets them.

Secondly, I liked Casey in the lead and her dynamics with Max, Debbie, Parker, and Finch. Moments that stood out from the story are when she bonds with Max over the Venus Flytrap or her conflicted relationship with Debbie. The author also added elements from Greek Mythology elements to the tale, and it was fun to see how it affected our characters.

Moreover, there is never a dull moment because so much happens in each chapter. Even if you skip a sentence, you miss something important. The author packed a lot into this novella, and I wondered what would happen next.

However, on that topic, my only criticism of the story is that the book needed to be longer and faster. It would have been interesting if the author added more details to the world-building or how the teens got their powers. The pacing is usually fast; hence, we didn’t get time to invest in the characters, including the villain.

Apart from that, I enjoyed “Creatures of Chaos” and am keen on reading the next book in the series to find the next adventure that awaits our group.
