In this queer YA retelling of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, stakes at Augustus Magnet School are cutthroat, scheming is creative, and loyalty is ever-changing.

Overnight, Bronwyn St. James goes from junior class queen to daughter of an imprisoned felon, and she lands in the care of her aunt and younger cousin Cass, a competitive cheerleader who Bronwyn barely knows. Life gets worse when her ex-best friend, the always-cool Jude Cuthbert, ostracizes Bronwyn from the queer social elite for dating a boy, Porter Kendrick.

Bronwyn and Jude are both running for student body president, and that means war. But after Bronwyn, Porter, and Cass share a video of Jude in a compromising position, Jude suddenly goes missing. No one has seen her for weeks and it might be all Bronwyn’s fault.

Will Jude ever be found? Or will Bronwyn finally have to reckon with what she’s won―and what she’s lost?

“Take Her Down” turned out to be an entertaining retelling of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and I enjoyed it a lot.

The book is very different from what I usually read because of the subject. While I have read a few of Shakespeare’s works, Julius Caesar was not one of them. Yet, I feel tempted to read the play after reading this book because the storyline was just so juicy. It has all the teen drama elements with a touch of mystery.

Firstly, I enjoyed the LGBTQ representation and how fluid many characters are in their preferences. The author also nicely writes the characters’ dynamics, and I enjoyed Bronwyn, Cass, Jude, and Porter a lot. Even the character growth is admirable, and moments that stood out were when Bronwyn rationalizes over her guilt or

Secondly, I liked how the author wrote the story, in the form of acts, as if we were reading Shakespeare’s plays. Moreover, we get snippets from Porter’s diary and other inserts that gave the book a personal touch. Some moments also made me laugh, like how the incidents take a toll between Bronwyn and Porter.

Perhaps the only criticism of the story is how it took time to set off. Nothing much happens in the first act except the introduction of the characters, and the story only got exciting when Jude came into the picture in the second half. Nevertheless, some moments shocked me, like when Antonia comes back to school or Cass films at the party. There were even moments that made me laugh, like Bronwyn’s representation of Little House on the Prairie.

Overall, “Take Her Down” is a unique and entertaining Young Adult book that is worth checking out, especially if you love Shakespeare’s works.

    A new Slayer for a new generation…

Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers—including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi—might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born.

But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next.

Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!

The first in an all-new series by New York Times best-selling author Kendare Blake continues the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer featuring the next generation of Scoobies and Slayers who must defeat a powerful new evil.

    About the Author:

Kendare Blake is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels and short stories. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She lives and writes in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked Sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.

I loved buffy the vampire slayer back in the day, and it’s so much fun to revisit these characters. Considering that Buffy has a considerable fanbase, I wondered how the author would pull the story off without upsetting the show’s fans.

My heart jumped with joy right from the first chapter when Spike, Willow, and Oz appeared, and we returned to Sunnydale. The author beautifully sets the entry for the next Slayer, now that Buffy is no longer in the picture, and Sunnydale is filled with vampires again. In some ways, this made me bittersweet to realize that we wouldn’t see Buffy anymore; but at the same time, I liked Frankie, Hailey, Sigmund, Spike, and the team as they went on their quest.

The author did an excellent job with the action and thrills as well. We see Frankie slay the vampires most awesomely in all true Buffy sense. It was also lovely to see the original cast use their full potential powers, like Willow’s powers of a witch. As the story progresses, you see the new Succoro and Countess studying the new Slayer, and the plot unfolds, which I felt paid a lovely homage to the series. Some notable moments in the tale are when Frankie does her first patrol or the creepy scene where Jane applies her makeup, and Buffy chases the demon and the brawl at the ravine.

However, some moments felt illogical, even within the plot. Moreover, I think the author did not give some legacy characters proper background, so those unfamiliar with the show would not get the references.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading the tale and thought the author paced it nicely, leading to a thrilling climax. Overall, “In Every Generation” is an admirable tribute and continuation to the classic series.

    A Beast So Beautiful Review:

“A Beast So Beautiful” is a gothic, grim representation of Beauty and the Beast, and I loved reading it!

What stood out for me in the story was the dynamic way in which the author wrote it. Whether it be the characters, pacing, or world-building, it is no surprise that the author wrote an intricate story. You feel so strongly towards the characters because of the details the author puts in their emotions. Leif is a fantastic protagonist and immediately captured my heart. My heart went out to Leif for the guilt he had to endure for his mother’s death. At the same time, he is keen to set things right, and I loved his determination. Similarly, I wanted to shake King Ivar for treating Leif so terribly. Even Avelyn and Astrid were memorable.

The author sets the suspense beautifully right from the beginning. From the scenes where they go to the woods to kill a bear to when he comes across the sorcerer guards, there is never a dull moment. There are also some creepy moments like when Leif goes to the dungeons, sees figures in the passageway, or saves the watchman. I also have to give credit to the author for the twists and turns. There is a twist in the end, which I did not expect, making the story memorable. The author also wrote the world grandeur, from the Frossen forest to the Weoh Mountains to the Tafel landscape.

Finally, the author also sets precedence for what we can expect in the next book of this duology, and I am excited about its release. Overall, “A Beast So Beautiful” is a stunning young adult fantasy retelling of one of my favorite stories, and I enjoyed it.

The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities Review:

“The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities” is a creative collection of tales featuring some of our favorite characters!

“Beware the Grove of True Love” was my favorite! I love the Aru Shah series, and this one was awesome! The author takes the classic Indian tale of Dushyanta and Shakuntala and weaves it into Aru’s world, and I loved it! My second favorite was “Bruto and the Freaky Flower,” as I love Paola Santiago, and it was exciting to see her fight the scary chupacabras and save Bruto with Dante. My third favorite story was “The Demon Drum.” Even though I haven’t read “Race to the Sun,” I loved the plot surrounding the curse and how it connected with the drums. Davery and Nizhoni also made a nice pair. “The Loneliest Demon” and “My Life as a Child Outlaw” was also memorable.

“Calamity Juice” was a mixed bag because I have not read the Sal and Gabi series. However, I did find the story very creative as Sal and Gabi search for Gladis, and we meet characters like Norberto and Yasmany along the way. Similarly, even “The Cave of Doom” was fun as Brooke and Zane encounter a demon even though I have not read the Storm Runner series.

However, there were stories that I had not read the original books of, like Dragon Pearl, and still enjoyed “The Initiation.” This story was entertaining as Min starts her assignment on the Thousand Worlds Domestic Security Ministry. I loved Duri in the story. Similarly, Gum Baby was hilarious, and I laughed at the scene where the room gets covered with spoiled honey.

Overall, this book would be perfect if you are already familiar with the characters before reading the tale. Else, it might be a hit or miss with some readers.

Shiori, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.
Raikama has dark magic of her own, and she banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.

Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and, on her journey, uncovers a conspiracy to overtake the throne—a conspiracy more twisted and deceitful, more cunning and complex, than even Raikama’s betrayal. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she’s been taught all her life to contain—no matter what it costs her.

    About the Author:

Elizabeth Lim is the author of the critically-acclaimed and bestselling The Blood of Stars duology (Spin the Dawn and Unravel the Dusk), the New York Times bestseller So This is Love, and the USA Today bestseller Reflection. Forthcoming books include the Six Crimson Cranes duology, expected summer 2021 and summer 2022, respectively.

Elizabeth grew up on a hearty staple of fairy tales, myths, and songs. Her passion for storytelling began around age 10, when she started writing fanfics for Sailor Moon, Sweet Valley, and Star Wars, and posted them online to discover, “Wow, people actually read my stuff. And that’s kinda cool!” But after one of her teachers told her she had “too much voice” in her essays, Elizabeth took a break from creative writing to focus on not flunking English.

Over the years, Elizabeth became a film and video game composer, and even went so far as to get a doctorate in music composition. But she always missed writing, and she turned to penning stories when she needed a breather from grad school. One day, she decided to write and finish a novel—for kicks, at first, then things became serious—and she hasn’t looked back since.
Elizabeth graduated from Harvard College with an A.B. in music and a secondary in East Asian Studies, and she completed her graduate degrees (MM, DMA) at The Juilliard School. She grew up in Northern California and Tokyo, Japan, and now resides in New York with her husband and two daughters.

    Six Crimson Cranes Review:

I fell in love with Elizabeth Lim’s novels ever since I read “Spin The Dawn.” “Six Crimson Cranes” is the start of a new series, and it is equally entertaining.

Firstly, I love the author’s writing style because she writes her stories in a beautiful fairy-tale-like manner. Whenever I pick one of her books, it’s like reading a classic fairy tale with mystical creatures surrounding beautiful Asian folklores. “Six Crimson Cranes” does not disappoint and has dragons, magical powers, spells, dark magic, and much more!

Shiori is lovely in the lead as she tries to help her brothers and her life back to normal from Raikama’s spell. I loved her friendship with Kiki and thought they made a fabulous duo. Kiki is adorable, helpful, and I never thought I would grow to love a fictional paper crane. Similarly, Takkan and Megari and wonderful too, and I loved Shiori’s dynamic with them. And, let’s not forget the beautiful bond she has for her brothers, even when all of them get transformed.

Moreover, there are quite a few twists and turns, particularly in the second half. The author introduces us to more characters who have their agenda. You begin to realize that there is a larger picture and hang on to Shiori as she tries to make things right. There are many memorable moments in the tale, like when Shiori first meets the Sentinel, when they fight the wolves, or when Shiori tries the spinning star stroke.

Overall, I enjoyed reading “Six Crimson Cranes ” and thought it was an excellent start to the series. I cannot wait for the next book to come out and see how the plot continues.

This was supposed to be her happily ever after…

It’s a familiar tale: A kind and beautiful young girl, reeling from the loss—a doting father, frantic to bring a mother’s love back into his daughter’s life. And the selfish, cruel woman who insinuates herself into that family―a woman so unfeeling, so cold-hearted, that when her new husband dies, she makes the girl a servant in her own home.

But who is that evil stepmother, that icy lady of the house? How did she become so closed off that, in the face of a child’s grief, she thought only to seek wealth and power for herself and her abhorrent daughters? Before that fateful ball, before the glass slipper and the prince, there was another story―a story of love and grief, of hope and dreams, dashed. It is the story of Lady Tremaine.

Even the coldest of villains are sometimes wives and mothers, women who loved and lost and hoped for something grander for their lives . . . once upon a dream.

The latest novel in Serena Valentino’s deliciously devious Villains series introduces the most famed and hated wicked stepmother of them all―but turns everything you know about her on its head.

    About the Author:

Serena Valentino has been weaving tales that combine mythos and guile for the past decade. She has also earned critical acclaim in both the comic and horror domains. Besides, she is known for her unique storytelling style, bringing her readers into exquisitely frightening worlds filled with terror, beauty, and extraordinary protagonists. The books in her best-selling Villains series are best enjoyed when read in the following order: Fairest of All, The Beast Within, Poor Unfortunate Soul, Mistress of All Evil, Mother Knows Best, Odd Sisters, Evil Thing, and Cold Hearted.

I have read a few books in the “Villains” series, and “Cold Hearted” was an excellent addition. It was such a delight because it completely changed my perspective of Lady Tremaine and how we perceived her in the classic movie.

“Cinderella” was the first movie I ever saw in my life, and I immediately fell in love with Disney movies since then. Hence, the film holds a special place in my heart. What’s creative about the series, in general, is how they make you change your perception of the villains but giving them a soul. In this book, we get to root for Lady Tremaine and find out how she met Richard and married Cinderella’s father. The author adds many twists and turns that show how Lady Tremaine got pushed into becoming the evil stepmother. Parts of the story also justify why she behaves so harshly towards Cinderella in the movie version, which I thought was a genius way of intricately connecting the book to the movie.

Moreover, I liked how the author incorporated characters from other tales like Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. The author made the story connected to a larger picture with other Disney classics, which I enjoyed reading. Surprisingly, Anastasia and Drizella still come across as bratty in the tale for the most part, which was entertaining. One of my favorite moments in the story is when Lady Tremaine finds out about the mice that Cinderella plays with, which freaks out Anastasia and Drizella. Another memorable incident is the Christmas scene that revolves around the stockings.

Overall, I found “Cold Hearted” to be a lovely addition to the series, and it changed the way I perceived Lady Tremaine.

If Nor can’t spin gold, she can always spin lies.

When seventeen-year-old Nor rescues a captured faerie in the woods, he gifts her with a magical golden thread she can use to summon him for a favor. Instead, Nor uses it as a con—to convince villagers to buy straw that can be transformed into gold. Her trick works a little too well, attracting the suspicion of Prince Casper, who hates nobody more than a liar. Intent on punishing Nor, he demands that she spin a room of straw into gold, and as her reward, he will marry her. Should she refuse or fail, the consequences will be dire.

    About the Author:

Brandie June spent most of her childhood on stage or reading, as both activities let her live in fantastic stories. She moved to Los Angeles to study acting at UCLA, and eventually branched out into costume design and playwriting. While she spends most of her free time writing, she will still take any excuse to play dress-up, especially if it involves wearing a crown. She happily promotes more stories as a marketing director for kids’ films and anime. When not writing or marketing, she can often be found doing aerial arts, playing board games, drinking too much espresso, and coming up with new art projects. GOLD SPUN Review:

Gold Spun” is a beautiful retelling of a classic Grimm’s fairy tale that the author weaves seamlessly for the young adult fantasy genre, and I loved reading it!

I must admit; Rumpelstiltskin is one of those stories that I vaguely remember, but I was never an ardent fan of the fairy tale. But reading this wonderful retelling has made me want to go and revisit the classic. I loved how the author creatively took the classic and turned it into a breathtaking young adult fantasy romance.

I adored Elenora, aka Nor, in the lead. She is headstrong, feisty, immature, but I still adored her. Moreover, the author wrote Nor’s romance so well that it perfectly fits a Young Adult audience. I loved her chemistry with both Pel and Casper. Her scenes with Pel are purely fantastical, which you wish would happen to you, whereas her chemistry with Casper is something you can relate to, as it is sweet and grounded.

However, if I had to recollect the memorable moments of the story, most of them revolve around Pel. I loved the scenes when they first meet or when Pel revisits and helps her, or how she helps him in return later. I also liked the side characters like Constance, Flora, Finn, and Devon. It was interesting to see how Nor tackled Constance and Ilana.

The story also ends with a cliffhanger that has me eagerly await for its continuation. I feel the story would be twice as exciting as we get to know more about the Queen.

Overall, I would recommend “Gold Spun” to anyone who loves reading a good retelling of a classic fairy tale, as I loved it.

A gothic YA fantasy debut about a young woman striving to break her sister’s curse and stop the killing in her small French town

Seventeen-year-old Marie mixes perfumes to sell on market day in her small eighteenth-century French town. She wants to make enough to save a dowry for her sister, Ama.  She hopes for Ama marrying well and Marie living in the level of freedom afforded only to spinster aunts. But her perfumes are more than sweet scents in cheap, cut-glass bottles. A certain few are laced with death. Marie laces the perfume delicately, not with poison but with a hint of honeysuckle she’s trained her sister to respond to. Marie marks her victim and Ama attacks. But she doesn’t attack as a girl. She kills as a beast.

Marking Ama’s victims controls the damage to keep suspicion at bay. But when a young boy turns up dead one morning, Marie must acknowledge she might be losing control of Ama. And if she can’t control her, she’ll have to cure her. Marie knows the only place she’ll find the cure is in the mansion where Ama’s curse took place, home of Lord Sebastien LeClaire. But once she gets into the mansion, she discovers dark secrets hidden away. They are secrets of the curse, of Lord Sebastien . . . and herself.

    Stalking Shadows Review:

Firstly, I applaud the author for writing a solid debut novel. She wrote the story so beautifully. It was indeed a surprise that it was her first novel. The author compellingly sets the tone, which immediately caught my interest. The plot comes off as a mysterious, gothic fairy tale that makes you feel like you are reading a Grimm’s novel.

Marie is a compelling character who fits perfectly in the plot. I enjoyed the first half of the tale as Marie searches for the magical book that might save Ama’s life. Her relationship with Lucien is adorable, and I adored how protective she gets over him. Similarly, I loved her scenes with Sebastien. While the two don’t exactly hit it off, I thought the author gradually and realistically paced their friendship. The second half is equally enjoyable as Marie and Sebastien try to figure out what is happening.

Another reason why I enjoyed the story is because of its twists and turns. The author keeps you guessing as to who the person is that is killing the children. Some parts surprised me as I did not expect them. However, the introduction of new characters in the plot throws you off from what you expected to happen. There are twists till the very end, which makes the story exciting to read.

Overall, I enjoyed “Stalking Shadows” and thought it was a beautiful story. While I would not exactly call it a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, it is nevertheless entertaining and stands out on its own. I look forward to reading the author’s future novels and hope she writes more stories in this genre.

Lost in the Never Woods is the YA Peter Pan reimagining we didn’t know we needed. Darkly atmospheric, Aiden Thomas’ sophomore novel follows a modern-day Peter Pan and Wendy’s work to uncover the truth behind a frightening series of disappearances in Wendy’s hometown. Mystery, intrigue, and magical realism abound in this haunting twist on a classic tale.

When children start to go missing in the local woods, a teen girl must face her fears and a past she can’t remember to rescue them in this atmospheric YA novel, Lost in the Never Woods by the author Cemetery Boys.

It’s been five years since Wendy, and her two brothers went missing in the woods, but when the town’s children start to disappear, the questions surrounding her brothers’ mysterious circumstances are brought back into the light. Attempting to flee her past, Wendy almost runs over an unconscious boy lying in the middle of the road…

Peter, a boy she thought lived only in her stories, asks for Wendy’s help to rescue the missing kids. But, to find them, Wendy must confront what’s waiting for her in the woods.

Lost in the Never Woods Review:

I loved “Lost in the Never Woods” so much and didn’t want it to end!

I read “Cemetery Boys” by the same author last year and fell in love with the style of writing. In my opinion, the author went on another higher level in “Lost in the Never Woods.” Some of the passages were so profound and beautiful. Frankly, the author did a beautiful job of taking a classic tale like “Peter Pan” and retelling it in a modern, young adult crime fiction novel. “Peter Pan” is one of my favorite classics, but even I could not predict how the storyline would progress in this book.

Similarly, the characters are dynamic, mysterious, and profound! Wendy shines in the lead as she tries to figure out her strange drawings. Moreover, I loved her chemistry with Peter and felt they shared a heartfelt friendship. The author writes the grief and loss of the characters in a personal way that made me emotional. Some of my favorite moments are when Wendy and Peter stumble upon the waterfall or when they go to get ice cream. The moments they share put a smile on my face.

However, there were some little moments that I felt could be polished. For instance, I didn’t find Jordan’s role relevant to the plot. Moreover, I don’t think the author explained why Wendy starts seeing Peter only on her birthday. Nevertheless, that did not stop me from enjoying the story. The plot picks up towards the end that leads to a memorable climax.

Overall, “Lost in the Never Woods” is one of my favorite retellings this year. I hope the author continues to write many more beautiful books in this genre.

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents the CITY OF THE PLAGUE GOD, an adventure based on ancient Mesopotamian mythology written by Sarwat Chadda, author of the Ash Mistry series. Characters from the Epic of Gilgamesh populate this high-stakes contemporary adventure in which all of Manhattan is under threat by the ancient god of plagues.

Thirteen-year-old Sik wants a simple life going to school and helping at his parents’ deli in the evenings. But all get fragmented when Nergal comes looking for him, thinking that Sik holds the secret to eternal life. As it Turns out, Sik is immortal but doesn’t know it. And that’s about to get him and the entire city into deep, deep trouble.

However, Sik’s not in this alone. He’s got Belet, the adopted daughter of Ishtar, the goddess of love and war, on his side, and a former hero named Gilgamesh, who has taken up gardening in Central Park. Now all they have to do is retrieve the Flower of Immortality to save Manhattan from extinction by disease. To succeed, they’ll have to conquer sly demons, treacherous gods, and their own darkest nightmares.

    About the Author:

Sarwat Chadda has lived and traveled throughout the world, from China to Guatemala. He lost his way in Mongolia, left alone at a volcano in Nicaragua and hiding a tree from a Nepal rhino. Not to mention his detention by Homeland Security in the US and chased around Tibet by the Chinese police. Maybe he has that sort of face.

Anyway, now he’s trying to settle in one place and stay out of trouble. Hence his new career as a writer. Also, It’s safe indoors and avoids any form of physical danger.

Throughout his travels, Sarwat has soaked up the myths, legends, and cultures of faraway places. Now, with the Ash Mistry series, he aims to bring these unfamiliar tales of ten-headed demons and blue-skinned heroes back home and put them beside the exploits of Achilles and Thor. His heroes are Prince Rama and the demon-slaying Kali. Isn’t it about time you met them too?

City of the Plague God Review:

I finished reading City of the Plague God in one sitting and could not put it down!

Firstly, I love that the main characters are Muslims. The author did not shy away from representing the characters and the dialogues honestly, and I applaud him. Sik is a great character who gets scared and confused yet faces his fears. I loved his friendship with Belet. She is grouchy most of the time, but she does grow on you. Similarly, I loved Daoud and the energy and comic relief he brought to the story.

Secondly, I loved the Mesopotamian references. I have not idea about Mesopotamian culture and mythology, and it is just fascinating. After reading this story, I researched more on Nergal, Ereshkigal, Ishtar, and Gilgamesh. Additionally, the author wrote the cultural references in a simple yet engaging manner that makes you invested in the culture.

Moreover, the author maintains the same adventurous energy that all “Rick Riordan Presents” books represent. He paces the story in an attractive manner, where the plot builds up with twists and turns. Consequently, as someone completely unfamiliar with the mythology, I had no idea how direction the story would go. There were many memorable moments in the story, like when Sik meets Mo or when Ishtar faces Nergal. Nergal was a ruthless villain and genuinely devious. While it sounds cliched, I enjoyed how he takes over Manhattan with his Poxies.

Although the story is purely fiction, few passages felt very close to reality and unnerved me. Notably, the way the virus spreads reminded me of the difficult time we faced in 2020. Overall, the story is lovely, adventurous, and very creative, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. In my opinion, City of the Plague God is a beautiful addition to the series.
