One phone call landed me the perfect job. Too bad it didn’t come with life insurance.

I didn’t think this job would be anything special. Sure, the first phone call was weird, and yeah, maybe it wasn’t the smartest idea to come to someone’s house before I met them in person, but Dax seemed nice. All he wanted was a caretaker for his sick father.

Oh, and an exorcist for the spirits haunting his family’s estate. Now he’s left me alone with his father, and the ghosts know my name. Caring for an old man with dementia, I can do. Fighting evil spirits? That’s way above my pay grade.

But Dax has disappeared so I have to learn on my own or both Orlando and I might not live to see tomorrow…

    Escaping Demons Review:

This book was amazing! I love stories that surpass my expectations and Escaping Demons certainly did!

To begin with, the author did a brilliant job in narrating the story. The story is atmospheric, eerie and mesmerizing. The author narrates it in a simple yet captivating manner that draws you to the plot. Moreover, the setting takes place in a haunted mansion, and I love spooky stories set in haunted mansions. There are so many scenes which spooked me, like the creepy dolls from the doll room, and the one with the scorpions (*shudders*). Also, there is a creepy mysterious boy who also randomly appears, that gave me the chills. Moreover, there are symbolic crows and owls, a battle with the forces of evil, and a beautiful romance. There is a lot happening in the story.

Speaking of romance, I loved the main characters and their relationships. Addison is wonderful in the lead. I loved the scenes where she has an out of body experience, and how she discovers the connection between her past and her present. Ambrose is also adorable as the reaper with the heart of gold (I loved this concept). Moreover, they have a sizzling chemistry. I also loved the bond that Addison shares with Dax. On a side note, Dax was an interesting character with a few shocking secrets. Similarly, I also liked Deacon and Orlando in the supporting role. The villain is a bit clichéd but still interesting. The author wrote the story with the perfect pacing and character development which I loved.

Overall, this is one of those books where I wish I could rate 10/5 stars because it is SO good. I cannot wait to see how the story continues in the next book!

Henrietta Von Harmon works as a 26 girl at a corner bar on Chicago’s northwest side. It’s 1935, but things still aren’t looking up since the big crash and her father’s subsequent suicide, leaving Henrietta to care for her antagonistic mother and younger siblings. Henrietta is eventually persuaded to take a job as a taxi dancer at a local dance hall—and just when she’s beginning to enjoy herself, the floor matron turns up dead. When aloof Inspector Clive Howard appears on the scene, Henrietta agrees to go undercover for him—and is plunged into Chicago’s grittier underworld.

Meanwhile, she’s still busy playing mother hen to her younger siblings, as well as to pesky neighborhood boy Stanley, who believes himself in love with her and keeps popping up in the most unlikely places, determined to keep Henrietta safe—even from the Inspector, if need be. Despite his efforts, however, and his penchant for messing up the Inspector’s investigation, the lovely Henrietta and the impenetrable Inspector find themselves drawn to each other in most unsuitable ways.

    About the Author:

Michelle Cox is the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series as well as “Novel Notes of Local Lore,” a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents. She suspects she may have once lived in the 1930s and, having yet to discover a handy time machine lying around, has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there. Coincidentally, her books have been praised by Kirkus, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and many others, so she might be on to something. Unbeknownst to most, Michelle hoards board games she doesn’t have time to play and is, not surprisingly, addicted to period dramas and big band music. Also marmalade.

    A Girl Like You Review:

Agatha Christie mystery meets Moulin Rouge! This book was fun, gripping, intriguing and romantic. I just loved it!

When I started reading this story, I expected it to be a relatively modest mystery, as it takes place in the 30s. Boy was I wrong! It has false identities, LGBT themes, exploitation, all surrounding a murder mystery and investigation of missing girls. However, the author writes all this in such a tasteful manner that keeps you hooked to the story-line. There are many scenes that stuck to me, like how Henrietta tries to find the mystery behind the Green Door, and who Neptune is. I was surprised when the author reveals the person behind it. Hence, the author maintained the plot very well.

Coming to the characters, I loved them all. Henrietta is wonderful in the lead as the curious girl who doesn’t really know what she is getting into. Moreover, I loved her budding romance with Inspector Howard. Both of them make a fine pair, and I am very interested to see how their story-line progresses in the following books. Similarly, I also loved Polly and Stanley. Poor Stanley, I hope his luck changes in the continuing books. Also, Agnes and Jenks really creeped me out. In fact, Marlowe as a setting was lively yet somewhat disturbing.

However, the only minor criticism I have towards the story is that I felt it was too wordy at times. The story is very nice, but the author tries to over explain the scenes, when it sentences could have been shorter. Apart from that, I thought this was one of the most entertaining historical novels I read.

Overall, this was a wonderful start to the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

    Liverpool 1950

Evie Kilgaren takes over the running of the back office at Skinner and Son’s haulage yard. At that time, she has no idea she is walking into a hive of blackmail, secrets and lies.
Her fellow co-worker and childhood nemesis, Susie Blackthorn, gets angry after demotion. She is hell-bent on securing the affections of local heartthrob Danny Harris.
Grace Harris, a singer on the prestigious D’Angelo transatlantic ocean liners, is returning home for engagement prior to marriage. But Grace is harbouring her own shocking secrets and something valuable her fiancé very desperately wants back.

Talking about the lives and loves of people working in the Mersey Docklands, love and luck are rarely in line.

    About the Author:

Sheila Riley was born in Southport, Merseyside,  As a child she liked nothing more than sitting quietly, so as not to be noticed, listening to adults converse.

She also had a vivid imagination, and what she didn’t understand of the fascinating adult world she invented for her own amusement. And so began a lifetime’s love of storytelling…

The Mersey Girls is set in 1950s Liverpool and is up for pre-order here on Amazon and will be published in August 2020

Besides,Sheila Riley wrote four #1 bestselling novels under the pseudonym Annie Groves and is now writing the Reckoner’s Row series under her own name. She has set it around the River Mersey and its docklands near to where she spent her early years.  She still lives in Liverpool

    The Mersey Girls Review:

I really enjoyed this book because it gave the reader a variety of romance elements to enjoy.

Although I have not read the previous book, I had no trouble adjusting to the characters and the plot. Personally, I adored all the characters, whether it be Grace, Evie, Danny, Bruce, Lucy, Meggie or Henry. However, I thought Susie was the best character of them all! Yes, she is the villain but she lights up the story with her immaturity. Watching Evie and Susie argue felt like watching Nelly and Laura in LHOTP. I loved the way they bickered with each other.

The author writes romance very well, and her range is seen in the characters. On one hand, we have the tragic whirlwind romance between Grace and Bruce. On the other hand, we have the cute and fluffy budding romance between Evie and Danny. Personally, I loved both stories and wanted to know how they would turn out. The author also manages to add in multiple story-lines on top of this, like Grace’s news that could change her life, and Meggie’s secrets that would impact Danny. The author balances all the elements in a beautiful manner, and makes you invested in the plot.

My only minor criticism is that the story was a bit lengthy at times. Few of the passages felt repetitive, especially when Grace ponders on what happened to Bruce. Also, I really liked Clifford as a negative role, and wish he has been more prominent in the story.

Apart from that, this was an endearing tale about family, trust, and opening your heart.

    Within the shadows Review:

I was not even aware that this was second book in a series, yet the book was entertaining as a standalone.

The author makes the story exciting right from page one, where Jarrett kidnaps Emma. However, the characters stand out in the story, particularly Emma. Emma goes through a lot, and it was interesting to see how she connects with others. Moreover, I loved her story with Andy and thought they had amazing chemistry. But, I felt she had chemistry with the others too. Although Emma encounters some traumatic situations, I was thinking how lucky she is to have so many men chasing her. While I do not know the entire back story (because I didn’t read the first book), it was entertaining to see how Rick, Chance and Andy want to protect her and are jealous of each other.

Moreover, I found the side story of Rick’s death interesting and mysterious. I loved Jarrett as the villain. He made the story exciting and unpredictable. He is creepy and dangerous, and you don’t know when he will strike next.

However, there are scenes which I felt could have been better. At times, it felt like the the author gave preference to Emma’s love life, instead of the plot. While I enjoyed this, I wish there were more twists and turns. Also, I didn’t really get to know some of the characters like Rick and Elaine because there is not sufficient background of them, and they are not prominent in the story-line.

Having said that, this was a entertaining and made me pick up the first book to see how it all started. Overall, “Within the Shadows” was an intriguing romance.

However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school’s resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. Cemetery Boys Review:

This book is entertaining, yet important, because it covers so many key topics about sexuality, acceptance, and finding your voice.

Firstly, the author covers SO many topics simultaneously that that there is never a dull moment. What I really loved about the story is the subject of identity. Yadriel is a gay trans Latinx boy who wants to be a Brujo, but his family is not supportive due to his orientation. Being accepted is one of the challenges many of us face, and I could really relate to Yadriel in terms of being accepted.

Moreover, I loved Yadriel’s relationship with Julian. I am not a fan of slow burn romance, but I really enjoyed it in this story. Yadriel has low self esteem because of the way his family and society treat him. Hence, it was so amazing to see him open up and become confident under Julian’s influence. Similarly, Julian is this fireball of energy, where he is hilarious and all over the place, and doesn’t care what people think. They complement each other and are so dynamic together. On a side note, I also loved Maritza and thought she was an amazing supporting character!

At the same time, the entire story takes place with the backdrop of a cemetery close to the Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival. This makes the book atmospheric, yet lively and engrossing. There is also this mystery element as Yadriel investigates on what happened to Miguel. I enjoyed the mystery element as well and could not guess the reason behind it.

Overall, I don’t think I have ever read a book that emphasizes on culture, diversity, sexuality, acceptance on top of a mystery, set in a cemetery ever! This book was very entertaining and I enjoyed reading it.

Emma’s life changes the day Ruben Templeton walks in and asks her out on a date. Over dinner, she’s a little disappointed when his best friend, Jesse Kimball, joins them. Jesse is a senator’s son who just announced his candidacy for mayor.
Twenty-seven-year-old Emma is surprised, but excited when it’s Jesse who calls her the next day instead of Ruben.

Jesse introduces Emma to a life with mansions, expensive cars, cocktail dresses, and status. It doesn’t take long for him to sweep her off her feet. He’s handsome and charming, making her feel like the center of his universe.

When Emma receives devastating news, Jesse asks her to marry him. From the moment she agrees, their relationship starts to deteriorate. Desperate to understand why her new husband is so cold and distant, she reaches out to him, only to be met by anger.
Hurt and confused, Emma turns to Ruben for advice.

Ruben suggests they give each other space for a few weeks. Weeks she can use to help him locate his younger brother Axel, who has gone missing. Emma agrees, and soon finds herself on a road trip across the country.

Will Emma and Jesse’s temporary separation clear the distance between them, or will she find love in the arms of another man?

    Author Bio:

A long time ago, I fell in love with the United States while traveling around in an Oldsmobile station-wagon with my husband. We are both born and raised in the Netherlands.
Together, we eventually found our way to the Pacific Northwest, built up a business, and raised our two boys into amazing young adults with their own careers. During this time, I also made a slow transition from reader to writer of many different stories.

My multiple award winning debut novel “Storm at Keizer Manor” sets the bar high for my second novel, Eagles in Flight.
All my books are stand alone novels in different genres. You might be in for a surprise, or a disappointment.

    Eagles in Flight Review:

This was such a beautiful book that dealt with secrets, romance, self-discovery and empowerment, and I loved reading it!

When the story started, I thought it was cute and interesting. But I completely fell in love with it once Emma takes the road trip that changes her life. I loved every moment of Emma’s adventures during these chapters and how she grows as a person. Truly, the author wrote the story in such a beautiful manner that put a smile on my face.

Moreover, I fell in love with Emma as soon as the story started. She is a timid librarian who soon gets tangled in the lives of the Templetons. However, you see how she grown into an independent lady once she goes on the trip on her quest. All the supporting characters she meets along the way are so memorable, like Bernard, Edwina, Sheep, Raven, Adelyn and Dora.

Furthermore, I loved the author’s style of writing. She has such a brilliant talent for writing chemistry between characters, because I even loved the romance between Emma and Jesse (before things fell apart). Moreover, the author progresses the characters in such a nice manner that you start to love the ‘bad guys’ too. Similarly, I liked the reason for Jesse treating Emma that way after marriage, and it made me like him too! And let’s not forget ‘Eagle’ and Emma, who had sizzling chemistry. On a side note, I love the lavish landscape the author paints of Iowa and Wyoming when Emma goes on her trip.

Overall, Eagles in Flight was a beautiful, charming, and endearing contemporary love story which I enjoyed more than expected!

Snowflakes Over Bay Tree Terrace Review:

I love books that give me a cozy, warm feeling, and Snowflakes Over Bay Tree Terrace did that perfectly!

To begin with, this is one of those books where I loved the characters as a couple, rather than themselves. Initially, I found Florence to be quite stubborn and set in her ‘school teacher’ ways even in her personal life. Sam also felt like a difficult guy to connect with, as he keeps his emotions bottled up. However, I loved their chemistry together. Their romance is so adorable and it was fun to see if they will/won’t be together.

Moreover, the supporting characters are endearing and I loved them all. Specifically, I loved Aiden! I thought the author did a wonderful job in highlighting his struggles. Both Sam and Aiden deal with their own struggles, and it was nice to see Florence in the mix. Also, Josie was another favorite character and I loved her friendship with Florence. She lightens up the entire story with her opinions and advice. In fact, I even liked Tom and his snobbish mannerisms.

The author setup the story against the beautiful backdrop of Willowbury. I loved the idyllic town set during winter season, and wished I resided in such a place. Surprisingly, I also found the setting of the Air Ambulance Services fascinating. I have not read much on the topic and I really admire the author for doing research and incorporating it in the plot.

Overall, this is one of those book that sets the mood for the festive season. If you are looking for a good, cozy romance, then I would recommend this book!

Movies, mansions, and murder in the Golden Age of Hollywood! Teri Bailey Black’s Chasing Starlight is a historical mystery from the award-winning author of the Thriller Award for Best Young Adult Novel.

1938. The Golden Age of Hollywood. Palm trees and movie stars. Film studios pumping out musicals, westerns, and gangster films at a furious pace. Everyone wants to be a star―except society girl and aspiring astronomer Kate Hildebrand, who’d rather study them in the night sky. She’s already famous after a childhood tragedy turned her into a newspaper headline. What she craves is stability.

But when Kate has to move to Hollywood to live with her washed-up silent film star grandfather, she walks into a murder scene and finds herself on the front page again. She suspects one of the young men boarding in her grandfather’s run-down mansion is the killer―maybe even her grandfather. She searches for clues.

Now, Kate must discover the killer while working on the set of a musical―and falling in love. Will her stars align so she can catch the murderer and live the dream in Old Hollywood? Or will she find that she’s just chasing starlight?

    Chasing Starlight Review:

This was a delightful murder mystery set in the 1930s that reminded me of the various Agatha Christie novels I loved.

Kate is wonderful in the lead. I thought she was a very interesting character because of what she went through when she was 13, and how it affects her in the present. In fact, all the boarders (and even Bonnie) are unique and interesting with distinguished personalities. Moreover, I loved Ollie and his relationship with Kate. Even though he is the prime suspect, I felt they both shared a wonderful bond. I also liked Kate’s romance with Hugo. Both of them were adorable together. To be honest, I did not even like Hugo when he was initially introduced. However, I grew to like him a lot after his interactions with Kate. The author progresses the characters so well that you see Kate accepting the unpredictability of life.

At the same time, the author paints the background in a beautiful manner where you feel like you are in the 1930s. I loved all the references she makes to Cary Grant, Arthur Conan Doyle and Charlie Chaplin. After reading this book, I binged watched the classic dance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and fell in love with them. I also like how she managed to blend the character development and the murder mystery very seamlessly.

My only criticism about the story is that is starts off a bit slow. The first 25-30% focuses on setting up the characters and the plot. Personally, the story picked up only after the murder. Also, I really like Reuben and Bonnie but didn’t see much of them in the story.

But overall, I enjoyed reading this story a lot. Now back to Fred and Ginger.

Kate Earnshaw’s father’s suicide has left many unanswered questions. The police declared it a suicide, but she can’t bring herself to believe it. The more she discovers, however, the more Kate wonders whether she ever really knew him.

Her father never explained why he let his childhood home in eastern Colorado fall into ruin or why he kept the property a secret. And he never told Kate about his close friendship with Evan Hastings, the handsome and somewhat puzzling man who lives on the property near the abandoned house. However, other families pass down their stories.

The Earnshaws pass down painful riddles without answers. But Kate comes from a family where unspoken secrets disappear from one generation to the next. Moreover, Evan seems to have as many secrets as her father and to know more about him than she did, which hurts. But there’s something about Evan that calls her back to her father’s home. Something that threatens to unbury more than the past.

    Legacy of Secrets Review:

The story is written very nicely where you get immersed in the story-line and its characters.

Firstly, I loved the mystery behind John’s death. The author does a wonderful job in creating an aura of mystery and suspense that almost gave it a Gothic touch. Moreover, the author also paced the story very nicely where we slowly start to uncover Kate’s family secrets. There is also equal importance given between Kate and Evan’s romance, and the mystery plot. Also, there are quite a few twists and turns which I honestly did not see coming. This made the story very entertaining to read. On a side note, I loved that the story was set in the ranch lifestyle in Colorado. I have always lived in the city and personally love thrillers set in the countryside.

For me, Evan was the star of the show. He is wonderful as the male lead and does everything in his power to help Kate. However, I didn’t like Kate at times, especially for the way she treated Evan. She wants to get answers about John, but gets frustrated and jealous at Evan for knowing more about him. I could relate to Evan’s frustrations when he feels like Kate is using him. Honestly, I felt the book would have been perfect if I had liked Kate more. However, I loved some of the supporting characters like Evan’s mother and his friend Craig. They add a touch of humor to the story and made me laugh out loud with their dialogues.

Overall, “Legacy of Secrets” is a wonderful debut novel by the author! I look forward to reading her future romance thrillers.

    Starcross Manor Review:

This is one of the cutest romance novels I have read in a while, and I loved everything about it.

The author did a wonderful job in writing the tale. Yes, the story is a tad predictable and you know how it is going to turn out. Yet, the author describes the characters and the settings so nicely that I didn’t want the story to end. The story takes place in the idyllic landscape where people trust one another. All the characters are charming and adorable. I loved them all. Julia and Flynn share a wonderful chemistry and we so cute together.  I also love how Julia gives him a chance even though she has her doubts. Flynn is also the perfect male lead. Moreover, I loved Julia’s friendship with Eleni. Both of them share a beautiful friendship that is inspiring.

My only recommendation would have been for Julia to confront Anais after learning the truth. I found it odd that she decided to let go of the incident after the revelations. Moreover, Flynn feels too good to be true where he doesn’t have any flaws. But, I think it worked out well in the story.  Other than that, the story was just perfect. After reading this book, I want to read the previous books in the series. I fell in love with the author’s style of writing.

Overall, this was a wonderful story that can be read as a standalone. I feel like going to a place like Starcross Manor now. I highly recommend it if you are in a the mood for a feel good romance.
