Cornish Dreams at Cockleshell Cottage Review:

This book is so entertaining. Charming characters, quirky scenarios, an enchanting backdrop, and a heart-warming romance made this a delightful romcom to read.

Even though I haven’t read the previous book in the series, I didn’t have any problems reading this as a standalone. The author did a wonderful job in diving right into the story. There are so many surprising situations that Paddy and Hal find themselves in. There are shocking revelations which I did not see coming, and that made this story so addictive. Moreover, I loved the beautiful backdrop of the idyllic village. The author describes the cottage and their residents so nicely that made me feel like I was living there.

Paddy and Hal are wonderful as the leads. Poor Paddy! She is just thrown from one situation to another, and hardly has time to adjust her lifestyle. Nevertheless, I loved Paddy and thought she fit the role perfectly. She is very interesting and complex than what I initially assumed. As an ex-model, I felt she would be haughty and overconfident like Bianca. But surprisingly, she is very sweet, and awkward and isn’t confident in public. Speaking of Bianca, I just loved to hate her! I really liked Hal as well but felt like I didn’t really know much about his background. Although he provides snippets of his time in the  war, we don’t see how it impacted him. There were also a few supporting characters like Beryl and Jemima who I felt could have been more prominent.

Overall, this book was so much fun to read that made me order the first book to see how it started. I love Paddy’s bond with her sisters and cannot wait for the next book in the series!

    Storms Gather Between Us Review:

This story surprised me! Initially when I started reading, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was confused with Will’s convoluted family history. There are so frequent references made to his past, and I was wondering perhaps this was a sequel? But, all my insecurities changed when the author introduced Hannah. Hannah’s story-line is intense and gripping, particularly being in the clutches of her evil father. From then on, the story was gripping.

The characters are wonderful. I loved Will and Hannah as individuals, and enjoyed reading them together as well. I also loved Hannah’s relationship with Judith and Sarah. Dawson is one of the most despicable characters I have ever read, and I thought the author did a wonderful job in portraying how evil he is.

All the supporting characters like Rafqa, Nance, Sam and Bridget are very interesting as well. I loved Nance and wanted to read more of her. Moreover, I liked Will’s friendship with Paolo. One of my favorite scenes was when Will goes to meet Paolo’s family in Italy and the way they treat him. I also loved Sam’s back story and how it impacted Hannah.

Like I said, the only reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars was because it felt a bit bumpy in the beginning. However, I was engrossed reading it once Hannah and Will met. Also, Aunt Liz is a mystery character that we don’t get any resolution to. Apart from that, Storms Gather Between Us is a very nice historical, contemporary, romance novel.

    The Dark Awakening Review:

Witches and werewolves and vampires, oh my! I have read quite a few YA paranormal stories and was expecting this to be generic Twilight-ish tale. But, this book surprised my expectations and was so much better than I thought. It was an adrenaline, adventure ride with many twists and turns. I loved every moment of it.

    Pros:

The author has done a wonderful job in writing the story. Each chapter has something fresh and exciting happening to Mercy. The style of writing is so smooth, and there is not even a dull moment. Moreover, she explains the origin history of Kylan in such a wonderful manner. I never had any difficulties in following with the story-line, even though a LOT of things happen.

Furthermore, I loved Mercy as the main character. She is the perfect archetype by being emotional, brave, and also having a sense of humor. But more than Mercy, I loved her friends. If I wanted a close circle of friends, I would want someone just like Shannon, Cami and Riley. Even Lily and Joel add so well to the plot!

    Cons:

However,  the story had a few minor inconsistencies, which I guess would be explained in the following books. For example, I didn’t understand how Riley and Amber knew each other in the first place. I thought he loved Mercy and was not seeing anyone else. Also, some of the sub-plots are also left open-ended, which I hoped we would get closure to. I hope to see more of the mysterious fortune teller in the following books.

Moreover, I thought it was strange how Mercy didn’t feel sad for her mother, after what the incident that takes place between them. She immediately moves on to Cami’s issues.  Also, it was a bit of a whiplash how Mercy was just so comfortable using her powers immediately after she discovers them, without any time for adjustment.

Overall, The Dark Awakening is worth reading if you love paranormal romance stories of vampires and witches!

Recommended for fans of Sense and Sensibility, The Forty Rules of Love, and A Walk To Remember.

Two strangers on the same path.
    Survivors. Companions.
They will be each other’s salvation.

On a rainy, winter night, a mysterious woman in a red dress seeking shelter comes inside the restaurant Kabir was busy working in —primarily the bar— and night after night, drink after drink, she comes back to the same spot. That is where he sees her for the first time.

Hundreds of patrons around her try to speak with her daily, but she dismisses them. It appears she wants to remain in a blissful peace alone with her booze and books. After seeing the mysterious woman reading a book, and because of his shy nature, Kabir gains entrance into her life by anonymously leaving books with notes for her.

The Name of Red is the story of two strangers, two different personalities who meet on a winter, rainy night who challenge each other. They have a connection which blossoms into a friendship due to their fondness of books. But they both have secrets that can bind them together or threaten their newfound relationship forever.

    The Name of Red Review:

This book is tragic yet so beautiful. I really loved reading this beautiful romantic story.

    Pros:

The characters are the highlight of the tale! Red is a mysterious character who you slowly get to know through Kabir, and her story is fascinating. Even though Red is the main character, I loved Kabir more. He is written as the perfect gentleman and you just want to root for him. Red and Kabir together are pure chemistry! There are so many wonderful moments in the story! I loved the dialogues that Kabir and Red share with each other. Some that come into mind are when:

Red tells Kabir not to compete over who needs to grief in what manner, because both of them have lived through their own tortures.
They go to the Sky Lanterns Festival in Pennsylvania. Such a heart-warming scene.
The way Kabir surprises Red on her birthday. Another beautiful moment.
Red talks in Farsi which add a unique touch.

Also, I LOVED the numerous book references and recommendations by the author beautifully incorporated in the dialogues.

Beena Khan has really done an amazing job in her debut novel! She has a wonderful knack for writing romance, and I would put her in the same league as Nicholas Sparks and Danielle Steel. In fact, I was shocked when she mentions the similarities in her stories were inspired by true events that happened to her.

    Cons:

I would have loved to give his book a full 5 star rating. However, there were some minor inconsistencies which I felt could have been avoided. For instance, ICE coming after Aryan because his work permit expired. I felt this was unnecessary and deviated from the plot. Also, we don’t get to know much about Wafa (but I guess this might be explained in the sequel?). Even Saagh and Red’s history felt blurry and not clearly explained.  Moreover, even though my heart went to Red in the second half, I thought was a bit immature and too bold in the first half. I realized it is who she is, but when she asks about bondage etc. it made me cringe, as felt it took away the beauty of the story.

Apart from that, I loved this story so much! “The Name of Red” surpassed my expectations because I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much! I truly loved reading the story and recommend it to anyone who wants to read a good contemporary romance.

So I go for it. I climb into Luke’s bed and the kissing is so much better than I imagined. Why did we wait so long to feel this? I moan his name and Bam! He jumps out of bed. WTF? It isn’t Luke. It’s his twin, Noah. I don’t even like Noah. And he certainly doesn’t like me.

This will NEVER happen again…until the next day against the barn door. Why can’t I stop seeing him? It will never work. We’re complete opposites. Enemies with benefits is a thing, right?

    Wrong Bed, Right Brother Review:

What a cute, fun book! Even though I am not a fan of steamy romance novels, I actually enjoyed reading this book.

Amanda and Noah are on fire together. When you read a romance novel, you expect it to get steamy at times, and this book delivers well on that aspect. But, even apart those scenes, Amanda and Noah are very adorable as a couple. They have their insecurities, and are physically attracted to each other. So, it was interesting to see how they handled moving on to the next step.

Moreover, I have not read any of the previous books in the series. Hence I was skeptic if I would follow the characters and the plot. Even though there is some minor references given, this was perfect to read as a standalone novel too. On a side note, I love running, and NYC is one of my favorite places in the world. Hence I loved the backdrop of both of both these elements in the story-line.

Why didn’t I give this book a 5 star rating? There is only one reason for that and it was the length of the story. The story felt very short and fast, where I really didn’t get to know the characters very well. Although I loved Amanda and Noah’s chemistry together, I felt like I didn’t know them individually. Usually, I like to get to know the characters individually before seeing them paired up. However, here we are immediately thrown into the romance.

Apart from that, this was a very sexy, cute and charming story. Overall, it delivers mostly everything you look forward to in a romance novel and does not disappoint.

Liz Lighty has always believed she’s too black, too poor, too awkward to shine in her small, rich, prom-obsessed midwestern town. But it’s okay — Liz has a plan that will get her out of Campbell, Indiana, forever: attend the uber-elite Pennington College, play in their world-famous orchestra, and become a doctor.

But when the financial aid she was counting on unexpectedly falls through, Liz’s plans come crashing down . . . until she’s reminded of her school’s scholarship for prom king and queen. There’s nothing Liz wants to do less than endure a gauntlet of social media trolls, catty competitors, and humiliating public events, but despite her devastating fear of the spotlight she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get to Pennington.

The only thing that makes it halfway bearable is the new girl in school, Mack. She’s smart, funny, and just as much of an outsider as Liz. But Mack is also in the running for queen. Will falling for the competition keep Liz from her dreams . . . or make them come true?

You Should See Me in a CrownLeah Johnson is a writer, editor and eternal Midwesterner, currently moonlighting as a New Yorker. She is a graduate of Indiana University and Sarah Lawrence College, where she received her MFA in fiction writing, and currently teaches in their undergraduate writing program. You Should See Me in a Crown Review:

I absolutely loved this! It’s cute, funny, hopeful, uplifting and romantic and also covers some very serious topics. It has everything that you want in a contemporary YA romance.

Liz is feisty, awkward, lost but also SO funny and adorable! She was wonderful as the main character. It’s really hard to hate any of the supporting characters, because they are drawn out so well. At times you hate Gabi and Jordan for the way they treat Liz. But then, you see all the nice things they did for her too, so you really cannot stay mad at them. One person who I really liked and wanted to see more of was Quinn. She was more complex and unpredictable than what I expected. Also, Liz and Mack are so cute together! Mack is wonderful and charming, and loves Liz unconditionally to easily forgive her mistakes. I couldn’t get enough of them.

I am now a fan of Leah Johnson! It is a difficult job to talk about coming out AND racial injustice, but the author gives equal importance to both. Moreover, she highlights these issues in a poignant yet lighthearted manner without making it sound like a lecture. She paces the story well, where Liz is always falling into one dilemma or another that she has to get out of. It was hilarious seeing her juggling between different versions of herself. On a side note, I wasn’t aware of sickle cell disease and how serious it is, until I read this story.

I hope the author continues to write many more books in the future! Overall, “You Should See Me in a Crown” is one of the best YA contemporary books to release this year.

Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner
    Release: May 26th 2020
    Format: Ebook
    Publisher: Berkley Books
    Source: Amazon

    Synopsis:

A showrunner and her assistant give the world something to talk about when they accidentally fuel a ridiculous rumor in this debut romance.

Hollywood powerhouse Jo is photographed making her assistant Emma laugh on the red carpet, and just like that, the tabloids declare them a couple. The so-called scandal couldn’t come at a worse time–threatening Emma’s promotion and Jo’s new movie.

As the gossip spreads, it starts to affect all areas of their lives. Paparazzi are following them outside the office, coworkers are treating them differently, and a “source” is feeding information to the media. But their only comment is “no comment”.

With the launch of Jo’s film project fast approaching, the two women begin to spend even more time together, getting along famously. Emma seems to have a sixth sense for knowing what Jo needs. And Jo, known for being aloof and outwardly cold, opens up to Emma in a way neither of them expects. They begin to realize the rumor might not be so off base after all…but is acting on the spark between them worth fanning the gossip flames?

    Something to Talk About Review:

What an adorable, romantic story! The characters are diverse, the romance is fresh and fun! Jo and Emma are dynamic and distinctive in their own manner. I loved both of them individually and their chemistry was also on fire. Emma is sweet and understanding, whereas Jo is controlling and confident. That doesn’t mean they are stereotyped. They show their vulnerability and emotional side to each other in such a sweet way. All the supporting characters like Avery and Evelyn add very well to their dynamic.

Also, I loved the whole setting of the Hollywood lifestyle and thought the author had portrayed it very well. The story also covers quite a few key issues like the #metoo movement, workplace relationship and coming out. There was so much happening in the story that I could not put it down! What starts off as an accidental rumor, soon turns into something that the characters never anticipated. The author did an awesome job for her debut novel! She is a pro in this genre and I really cannot wait to see more of her releases.

However, the story starts to drag towards the end. There is a lot of angst in the last few chapters that just goes back and forth. I felt this was unnecessary and the author could have easily ended the story 5 chapters earlier.  Moreover, it was not so much the angst, it was also the repetition of dialogue. For instance, an incident would occur between Jo and Emma, and the next chapter would have Emma reciting it to Avery, or Jo to Evelyn.

Overall though, I loved that I read this book in the first day of pride month, and I wish to read more of the author’s works in the future!

The Selection (The Selection #1) by Kiera Cass
    Release: April 24th 2012
    Format: Paperback
    Publisher: HarperTeen
    Source: Amazon

    Synopsis:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

    The Selection Review:

This book is like cotton candy. It is delicious, it is fluff, its sweet, and it is light. It’s a cute romance novel which makes you feel like you are reading the book version of the Bachelor. Even though I never saw the Bachelor, I enjoyed reading this story so much.

What’s interesting about this book is that there is nothing really new about it. The story is your typical love triangle that takes place in a slightly different landscape. But what really sets it apart is the author’s style of writing. Kiera Cass is one of those authors who can turn s*** into sugar and the Selection is just that. It’s a delicious novel that you cannot put down. Furthermore, she has a charm in portraying her characters and that glues you to the story.

Moreover, I love America as the main character. I thought the author wrote her very well and I loved her relation with Maxon. Additionally, I detest Aspen and think he is selfish and arrogant. Most of the book is about America’s feelings for Maxon or Aspen. The author has written the romance in such a feel good way that you really don’t care if there’s nothing else.

The only thing I didn’t like about the story is the world building. The world building was a bit awkward and bumpy. The story focuses on the characters from the get-go and you really don’t know what to make of the world. Also, the author mentions the history of the world in the second half of the book which seemed weird and out of place. Even after finishing it, I still don’t understand the ranking system or how it came into being. Perhaps the author explains it in the following books.

Apart from that, I really enjoyed this story. Overall, I relished reading “The Selection”, which I consider my guilty pleasure, and can’t wait to read book 2.

The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly Review:

I loved the tone that the story represents about gender equality. Even though we see progress, there are still a lot of professions where inequality exists towards women, LGBTQ, dark skinned people etc. Hence, I really love reading such books where the main character tries to fight the inconsistencies of society. There are also subplots about Kit’s life and her family problems which was interesting. I really liked the way Kit confronts her father for all his mistakes and tries to move on.

Speaking of Kit, I loved her as the main character. She is feisty, sweet, and fights for what she believes in. Even when things comes crashing around her, she picks herself up and moves on. Also, Chris, Jett and the supporting crew are fun and adorable. I loved Layla as the supporting character and wished we saw more of her. On a side note, I loved the references they made to other fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings and A Game of Thrones.

I thought the author did a great job for the debut novel. What I really liked was how she didn’t stereotype the characters. Even the bad guys have their moments where you emphasize with them. I hope she releases more books in the future!

However, I wished the story had ended better though. I’m not sure why, I felt like things just got wrapped up conveniently and quickly. I would have liked it if the ending was drawn out better. Moreover, I liked Jett and Kit as friends and thought trying to couple them was unnecessary.

Apart from that, this is a fun, quirky, contemporary romance focusing on gender equality.

    Breath Like Water Review:

This was a very surprising read because I thought the book was ok in the first half, but LOVED it in the second half. Usually, most books that I read start off with a bang and maintain/lowers momentum as it progresses. Initially, “Breath Like Water” seemed ok when I started reading. The story has a nice premise but nothing much really happens in the first half. Don’t get me wrong. It felt like a decent story where two teens meet and fall in love. But, it seemed like the run of the mill contemporary romance book. However, I felt like the story picked up as soon as soon as Susannah learns of Harry’s secret. From then on, I couldn’t put the book down!

Moreover, I really loved the whole swimming/Olympics theme of the story. I really liked Susannah and Harry as the main characters. Susannah is focused on her goals, and it was fun to see how she juggles her relationship with Harry. Even though they have their own difficulties, I loved how they lifted each other during the tough times. The author highlighted their struggles beautifully and so realistically that you feel their pain. I also liked the supporting characters like Beth, Amber, Jessa and Nina. Dave is a character you love to hate! I really despised that he got away with treating people in his team that way. I wished Susannah or Beth has put him in his place more frequently in the story. On a side note, I wished we had seen more of Jessa as she seemed like a very interesting character.

Overall, “Breath Like Water” is one of those books that slowly grew on me, and went from ‘meh’ to ‘a-meh-zing’!
