Centuries before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, in the era of the glorious High Republic, the Jedi are the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy!

After a series of staggering losses, the Republic seems to finally have the villainous Nihil marauders on the run, and it looks like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Until word comes of a suspected Nihil attack on the industrial cosmopolitan world of Corellia, right in the Galactic Core.

Sent to investigate are Jedi Masters Cohmac Vitus and Kantam Sy, along with Padawans Reath Silas and Ram Jomaram, all fighting their own private battles after months of unrelenting danger. On Corellia, Reath and Ram encounter a brazen young security specialist named Crash, whose friend was one of the victims of the Nihil attack, and they team up with her to infiltrate Corellia’s elite while the Masters pursue more diplomatic avenues. But going undercover with Crash is more dangerous than anyone expected, even as Ram pulls in his friend Zeen to help with an elaborate ruse involving a galactic pop star.

But what they uncover on Corellia turns out to be just one part of a greater plan, one that could lead the Jedi to their most stunning defeat yet….

    Midnight Horizon Review:

Ok, let me preface by saying I am not a Star Wars fan. I probably saw one of the movies in the last decade and did not even know this book was part of a series. Yet, reading this as a standalone, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was tempted to the series in order.

The author does a great job in worldbuilding. Even as a newbie, the world of Jedis and Padawans immersed me as our crew headed to Coronet City. I never found it difficult to follow any of the characters. My favorite was Crash, and I loved her interactions with Ram and Reath. Crash is not afraid to speak her mind, and her impulsiveness gets her into trouble at times, but she is so entertaining. Similarly, Ram and Reath were also great as they embarked to Corellia. We also have other characters, like Zeen and Lula, who have their storyline but merge well with the larger picture later in the book.

For me, some notable moments in the tale were when Kantam and Cohmac see the war signs of the Nihil and when the team talks about Krix. The book’s climax is epic, where the author ultimately glues you to the galactic action.

However, there were moments when the author made references to the previous books, and I wish I had read the series to get its full impact. Hence, this review is from someone unfamiliar with the series and the movie franchise and still enjoyed reading it as a standalone. I would have rated it five stars all the way had I read the series in order and watched the movies.

Overall, “Midnight Horizon” is an excellent conclusion to “The High Republic” series and has made me want to read from the beginning.

The year is 2100. The lack of trust that characterized the early Internet era is long behind us. Mathematical proof ensures neural implants can’t be hacked, and the Board of Reality Overseers blocks false information from spreading.

When undergraduate Sergei Kraev, who dreams of becoming a professor, is accepted into the Technion’s computer science graduate program, he throws himself into his research project: making it possible for neural implants to transmit information directly to the brain. If he succeeds, he’ll earn a full professorship.

But Sergei falls under the influence of Sunny Kim, the beautiful and charismatic leader of a K-pop dance cult. Sergei believes in Sunny’s good intentions and wants to protect her from critics, leading him to perform a feat of engineering that leaves billions of brains vulnerable to attack.

With the clock ticking towards catastrophe, can Sergei see the truth about Sunny and undo what he’s done?

    About the Author:

Eric Silberstein holds a degree in computer science from Harvard and is a winner of the MIT TR35 prize.

He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and children.

The Insecure Mind of Sergei Kraev Review:

The first aspect that stood out for the story is how futuristic the author designed it. I felt I was getting a glimpse of a realistic future that intimidated me how technology became an integral part of our lives. I was so impressed that this was the author’s debut because he beautifully executed the story!

Moreover, I enjoyed how the author depicted the characters.
Initially, it was interesting to see the dynamics between Sergei, Karima, and Daniel on the one hand and Sunny’s lavish lifestyle on the other hand. In the beginning, Sunny’s storyline drew me into the book and her life at 100M with Yo Kyeong. However, all the characters and storylines absorbed me into the author’s world, and I found it fascinating, even Lynette.

Another nice part of the book is how the author writes the characters’ emotions well, who we can root for, even if it seems like they are from another world and time. Some of my favorite moments are when Karima faces betrayal at Uncle Gadi’s farm, Sunny’s conflict with Sang-Chul and Fernando, or Sergei’s feelings for Nadya. The plot gets so twisted towards the climax that you wonder what will happen to everyone. Moreover, I love the creative way the author gets personal with the tale. For instance, the narrator, Leon, breaks the story in places to insert blog posts from various decades that give the story a vintage look.

Perhaps the book’s only criticism is that it took me a good few chapters to get into the groove. The author toggles between different timelines and locations between branches, from Korea to Singapore to Israel that took me time to adjust.

Overall, I thought “The Insecure Mind of Sergei Kraev” was a brilliant debut, and I can easily see a movie adaptation.

A second chance is the last thing she wants.

When thirty-nine year old Maria Forssmann wakes up in her seventeen-year-old body, she doesn’t know how she got there. All she does know is she has to get back: to her home in Bienville, Mississippi, to her job as a successful psychiatrist and, most importantly, to her husband, daughters, and unborn son.

But she also knows that, in only a few weeks, a devastating tragedy will strike her husband, a tragedy that will lead to their meeting each other.

Can she change time and still keep what it’s given her?

Exploring the responsibilities love lays on us, the complicated burdens of motherhood, and the rippling impact of our choices, She Wouldn’t Change a Thing is a dazzling debut from a bright new voice.

    About the Author:

Sarah is a native of Chicago who now resides on the gulf coast of Mississippi with her husband and three daughters. Writing is her second career but her first dream job.

She retired from her psychiatry practice shortly before relocating with her husband and daughters to Mississippi, where she finally put pen to paper and began telling her stories.

She Wouldn’t Change A Thing Review:

As soon as I started reading the story, the plot immediately drew my attention because it felt unique. When you read the book’s blurb, you think it is some time travel story. While, in some ways, it is, this book is so much more. The author keeps you on your toes as she introduces new characters with different storylines, and you wonder how they will connect in the end. Initially, I was glued to Maria’s storyline as she deals with Sylvia, John, and Shelby. However, the author also introduces us to Jenny and Hank, who seem to have their storyline, and you wonder how it all connects to what Maria experiences.

Moreover, the author also progresses the story nicely into various parts. I loved the second part of the book and was hanging on to Maria’s story. While it may not be intentional, I enjoyed some humorous features, such as when Maria initially finds herself talking to her mother and wondering about AP classes. Maria is great in the lead as she goes on this second chances, trust, and forgiveness journey. Before she witnessed the incident, I liked how the author portrayed her thoughts about her patients, like Sylvia. I honestly did not know how the story would turn out, especially during the scenes with Maria and Henry.

Perhaps the only minor criticism of the story is how it got a little convoluted towards the end. There is so much happening so fast that I had to read each page carefully to avoid missing something important. However, I enjoyed how the story wrapped up and was one of those books that I kept thinking of post-reading.

Overall, “She Wouldn’t Change a Thing” would blow your mind for its unique concept, and I enjoyed it a lot!

All I’ve wanted since my abduction from Earth’s first long-range space flight is freedom from my alien captives. But when I’m sold off to a Rhonar warrior, I learn I’m not the only one enslaved on this hellish planet, and survival comes at a cost.

The dominant alpha alien they call Xelan may be my new master, but his fair dealings—and devilishly sexy charms—give me hope for the future.
If I can strike an agreement with the battle-scarred warrior, perhaps together we can change the destiny of those bound in chains.
    And if I can’t—well, I haven’t backed down from a fight yet.

However, as enemies line up to destroy the alien warriors and subjugate the galaxy, I discover that the universe has a sense of humor.
Fated mates are real. And Xelan declares me his.
How can I attain my freedom if I’m tied to another being? Even if his possessive growls and single-minded attention ignite my desires in ways I’ve only dreamed, I cannot be his.

But how long can I fight the pull of a mating bond before I lose my head—and my heart—to the heat burning between us?
    Only the stars know.

    Alien’s Captive Review:

If I had to describe a book that I would consider a guilty pleasure reading, it would be “Alien’s Captive.”

The author did a lovely job of writing the characters’ emotions as well as the world-building. Ava is fun! She doesn’t let something like getting abducted in space stop her from being brave. However, I also liked how the author portrayed her emotions nicely, like the scenes where Ava feels unsure who to trust and if Ava had made a mistake. I loved her when she wanted to be part of the mission.

Similarly, Xelan is also compelling as she tries to understand his feelings for Ava. The author writes romance nicely, and I felt drawn towards the chemistry between Xelan and Ava as soon as he finds her in the slave pen. Ava soon becomes his Truxoria, who he feels he has to protect. Moreover, I enjoyed the flashbacks (or his backstory) with Calzara. The author also spiced up the scenes between the two, and the steamy romance added nicely. There are also characters you despise, like the dastardly Calth.

Another character who I found captivating was Brok. Even though he makes a guest appearance in a few scenes, he brings an aura of mystery, and I wanted to know more about him. The characters are what made this story so enjoyable to read.

There are some adventurous moments as well, like the shocking moments that Ava witnesses on stage. Some exciting moments are when Xelan falls in front of Ava or when they go to the party.

Overall, “Alien’s Captive” is an exciting start to “Earth Brides & Alien Warriors,” and I look forward to reading its continuation.

    Jadie in Five Dimensions Review:

Dimensions and Portals, with secrets and lies, made “Jadie in Five Dimensions” a remarkable book to read.

Firstly, I commend the author for writing such a unique middle-grade novel. The plot gives a futuristic, science-fiction feel, where we have Transporters, Bracelet communications, dimension travel, and much more. The author nicely uses various Physics concepts like centrifugal forces and multi-dimensions to set the backdrop. The geeky side of me had a thrill reading this story.

Secondly, the characters are also charismatic. Jadie is remarkable as she realizes that her life has been a lie. I liked many memorable moments with Jadie, like when she looks at the photograph, meets Sam, or starts using Ty’s device. Even the supporting characters like Marius and Ty added well. Frankly, Ty was initially a question mark because I did not know how his actions would impact Jadie.

Similarly, my heart also went out to Sam, as he feels like his family suffers from bad luck. The story was hard to put down when the events revolved around his father. The author also nicely toggles the chapters between Jadie, Ty’s, and Sam’s perspectives. At the same time, Miss Rose and the Seers gave me goosebumps because of how creepy they appeared.

On a side note, I also enjoyed the illustrations of instructions that the author inserted and felt that it added a nice touch. The author paces the story nicely and fills the second half of the tale with thrills and adventure. As this is a science fiction novel, I had no idea how the story would conclude and thought the author delivered it beautifully.

Overall, “Jadie in Five Dimensions” is a brave and creative novel in the middle-grade genre, and I enjoyed reading it a lot!

As darkness closes in on the city, an heiress and an outlaw must decide whether to fend for themselves or fight for each other.

As heiress to a powerful tech empire, seventeen-year-old Asa Almeida strives to prove she’s more than her manipulative father’s shadow. But when he uploads her rebellious sister’s mind to an experimental brain, Asa will do anything to save her sister from reprogramming—including fleeing her predetermined future with her sister’s digitized mind in tow. With a bounty on her head and a rogue A.I. hunting her, Asa’s getaway ship crash-lands in the worst possible place: the neon-drenched outlaw paradise, Requiem.

Gun-slinging smuggler Riven Hawthorne is determined to claw her way up Requiem’s underworld hierarchy. A runaway rich girl is exactly the bounty Riven needs—until a nasty computer virus spreads in Asa’s wake, causing a citywide blackout and tech quarantine. To get the payout for Asa and save Requiem from the monster in its circuits, Riven must team up with her captive.

Riven breaks skulls the way Asa breaks circuits, but their opponent is unlike anything they’ve ever seen. The A.I. exploits the girls’ darkest memories and deepest secrets, threatening to shatter the fragile alliance they’re both depending on. As one of Requiem’s 154-hour nights grows darker, the girls must decide whether to fend for themselves or fight for each other before Riven’s city and Asa’s sister are snuffed out forever.

    City of Shattered Light Review:

“City of Shattered Light” is a gripping young adult, science fiction fantasy novel that was simply out of this world!

Firstly, kudos to the author for such a remarkable debut! Usually, when I read science fiction books, it takes a while to understand world-building. The first thing that struck me was how smoothly the author described world-building. I had no trouble following the story where we encountered “scavs,” bruisers, matriarchs, and organ pirates. The author fills the story with surprising twists and turns, with science fiction action and adventure, that made the book hard to put down. Some of the moments that stood out for me was when Asa realizes there is no turning back, or when she witnesses what happens to Kaya.

Moreover, I enjoyed Asa and Riven as the two leads. They are striking characters with contrasting personalities, and I liked how the author toggled the chapters between their perspectives. Asa was my favorite, and I was intrigued by how her world changed because of what happened to Kaya. The author also introduces us to other memorable characters like Diego, Banshee, and Morphett as the story progresses. I also enjoyed the scenes between Ty and Asa. It was also interesting to see how Riven would plan her next move knowing she was running out of time. Both Riven and Asa have reasons to go ahead with their mission, but it was nice to see how they got together. The author paces the story wonderfully, which leads to a thrilling climax.

The story also ends in a cliffhanger, where you want to pick up the next book and immediately start reading. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed “City of Shattered Light” and can’t wait to read the continuation.

Action! Humor! Fantasy! This new series opener is a tour de force from international bestseller Jonathan Stroud.

Scarlett McCain is an outlaw, a bank robber and a sharp shooter–a girl of formidable skills. Fueled by a tragic injustice in her past, she travels the broken kingdoms of England alone, carrying out daring heists in the surviving towns and fending off monstrous beasts in the wilds outside their fortified walls. Her life is dangerous, free, and simple–until she finds a wrecked bus on a lonely road. Albert Browne, the sole survivor of the accident, is a seemingly innocent and harmless youth. Against her better judgement, Scarlett agrees to escort him to safety.

This is a mistake. They are soon pursued by men with dogs and guns and explosives. Scarlett is used to running from the law, but these trackers are the most skilled she’s ever encountered–and they don’t seem to be after her. Just who is this Albert Browne Scarlett must uncover his shocking secrets if either of them are going to survive.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne Review:

“The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne” is an incredible young adult fantasy adventure that I could not put down.

Firstly, kudos to the author for setting up such a fantastic world. The environment is part dystopian, part Western, part futuristic, part science fiction, and just excellent altogether. I loved the Tainted concept and how the story gave me a “Stranger Things” vibe. Right from the first page, the author sets the pace of what to expect as Scarlett plots her next move for a robbery. The story goes full swing once Albert enters the picture.

Secondly, the characters are the highlight of the tale. I loved Scarlett and Albert as individuals and how they interacted together. Scarlett is wise and goes to the point. At the same time, Albert is sensitive yet powerful and adds a touch of humor through his innocence. I loved the way the two bonded and how they got closer with each other throughout their journey. But, no story can shine without a conniving villain, and I was not too fond of Dr. Calloway at all.

Thirdly, the author paces the story so well that you feel a different emotion at certain parts. I found myself laughing at some of Albert’s behavior and was scared to turn the page in other moments, like when Scarlett and Albert look for Ettie. There were also moments where I felt protective towards Albert when he encountered Carrie, or the team met the likes of Pope, Lee, and Shilling. Similarly, the author also ends the story on a high note, where you realize there is so much potential for the series and our two main leads.

Overall, I loved everything about “The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne” and cannot wait to revisit these characters soon.

What if a school club changed your life forever?

In the second week of seventh grade, Jason Sloan signs up for the brand-new HAIR Club. He and his friends have no idea what it’s about, but since they’re the first to sign up they figure they’ll be in charge in no time. The club turns out to be super weird: using fancy new equipment donated by a mysterious benefactor, the members are supposed to monitor school security footage. Their first assignment: find out what is stealing the cafeteria’s croutons.

Instead of the expected dark cafeteria, the computers show the club members something else entirely: actual footage of themselves as high school seniors, five years in the future! What on earth could be happening? Is it some kind of time warp, or alternate reality? Or is it just an un-funny prank? As they scramble to solve the mystery, they can’t help but notice something else—none of them like what they see five years from now. Is there any way to change the future—and their fates?

    Welcome to Dweeb Club Review:

“Welcome to Dweeb Club” was an excellent middle-grade adventure book that made me glued to the pages.

Let me preface by saying that I jumped into the story without reading the synopsis. I love reading middle-grade literature, and the title sounded like a humorous tale, so I started reading it. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that the book has much more going on than your usual middle school club activities. There is action, drama, adventure, and even orders on science fiction and alternate realities. I loved how the author incorporated all these elements into this story with a touch of humor, where even I didn’t know how the story would progress.

The story picked up once they started seeing the Midnight Recordings and started investigating what was happening. I also enjoyed the storyline surrounding the Crouton Crook. One memorable moment in the tale is when they are all in the cafeteria and come across the culprit and wonder what to do.

All the characters in the club are also charming. I liked Jason in the lead and how he interacted with the group. What’s nice is also how the author included Jason’s Uncle Luke and Aunt Shannon in the storyline because I enjoyed both the characters. Even Alice, as annoying as she could be at times, was humorous. Even Steve, Vincent, Lara, Andrew, Nikhil, and Hoppy were fun.

The author also processes the tale nicely that leads to an exciting climax. What’s nice about the science fiction angle is how it makes us wonder what our future selves would be if we changed action in our present.

Overall, “Welcome to Dweeb Club” is a fabulous start to the series, and I look forward to revisiting the characters.

    Midnight Black Review:

“Midnight Black” is a disturbing yet very creative and gripping dystopian novel that had me engrossed.

I enjoyed the concept of the story. A man sentenced for seventeen years to another planet finds life on Earth completely different when he returns. Even though this is a science fiction, dystopian novel, some elements connect to us. Moments like when Billy witnesses officials attacking protestors with batons remind us of what we have seen in the news for the last few years.  Some scenes shocked me, like the ones involving Rubio and Alvera.

Billy is gripping in the lead, and I liked how the author wrote him. From the beginning, Billy comes off as a no-nonsense guy eat how he reacts with his fellow inmates like Quasi and the annoying Donald P. Costigan. There were moments when I could connect when him, especially when he lands on Earth and finds how much it has changed. I also liked his interactions with Hank and Chris. I also enjoyed how the author wrote his chemistry with Jade and was not fond of Chernov and Gustav.

Moreover, the author also adds personal moments like when Billy contemplates how the human relationship matters in the end. The author also nicely throws in some humor in the dialogues to balance the seriousness of the tale. For instance, it was a nice touch with Billy reunites with someone from his past to work on the assignment. Even though the story is dark and graphic, I admired how the author inserts moments of hope and gratitude for us to appreciate the world we live in and make the most of it.

Overall, “Midnight Black” is an intriguing novel, and I recommend it to those who love a gripping Dystopian science fiction crime story.

    Cogheart Review:

“Cogheart” is a creative steampunk middle-grade novel (the first in the genre I have read) that I thought was wonderful.

Firstly, I commend the author for writing an adventurous steampunk tale targeted at middle-graders. I enjoyed all the author’s mechanical details, such as Lily’s father’s inventions and Malkin. The author constructed the story immediately captured my attention because the author sets it in the Victorian times, but the gadgets and mechanical innovations are futuristic.

Lily is lovely in the lead and a perfect heroine for such a tale. The author wrote her character very nicely as she goes on a journey to find her father. I liked her friendship with Robert and enjoyed the scenes where they help each other out. At times, I admired Robert more than Lily because we see him build confidence throughout the story. One of my favorite scenes is when they escape from Roach and Mould. The author wrote Lily, Robert, and Malkin vibrantly.

Similarly, Professor Silverfish, Mould, and Roach are entertaining as the antagonists, although the latter two feel cartoonish at times. I think they would be the perfect villains to entertain the younger readers primarily. However, I did like how the author made Madame and Silverfish pretty complex, where you don’t know what their intentions are initially. On a side note, I also liked Anna, even though she only makes a brief appearance in the tale. I found her to be mysterious.

Overall, “Cogheart” is a fast-paced, steampunk middle grade novel and an excellent start to “The Cogheart Adventures” series.
