When Japanese nature show host Daisuke Matsumori finds himself on an alien world, he hopes to rekindle his passion for his work. Daisuke travels through a newly discovered wormhole in the Papuan highlands. And  he joins biologist Anne Houlihan on Junction, a patchwork planet of competing alien ecosystems.

But  their exploratory party crashes in the alien wilderness. Daisuke and Anne try to lead bickering soldiers and civilians back to civilization alive. They trek across one unearthly biome after another and members of the party continue to die.  However, Daisuke wonders whether human politics might be more deadly than alien biology. One of his companions might be a murderer.

    Junction Review:

“Junction” is a gripping science fiction novel with many other elements that will keep you guessing.

I am not a fan of science fiction, but I make an exception for Flame Tree Press as I love their selections. I admit, when I started reading “Junction,” I wasn’t sure what was happening. It took me a while to get used to the world and find out what was happening. But, as soon as Daisuke goes through the wormhole and finds himself on the alien planet, the story picked up full swing. The author excitingly narrates the story as Daisuke, and the crew navigates the new world. I also enjoyed the world-building, where we see exciting creatures like the Shmoo and how they behave.

Moreover, the author also wrote the characters wonderfully. We have an array of nationalities, from Indonesian to Russian, and it was interesting to see how politics played a role in the story. Daisuke is charming in the lead as he tries to figure out who is good and who isn’t. Did I mention there is also a traitor among the crew, who is murdering them one by one? I loved the mystery element that the author incorporated as we try to figure out who the killer is. Also, some of the deaths were shocking as I did not expect core characters to get killed. There is also a romance between Daisuke and Anne, which I thought added well to the science fiction plot. The story also ends in a cliffhanger that makes you want to pick up the sequel “Interchange” and continue reading.

Overall, “Junction” turned out to be much better than I expected, and I could not put it down.

    The Freedom Race Review:

Firstly, this book is probably one of the very few that took me the longest time to finish because of its intricate details and world-building. The author creates the world and the characters in such detailed information that you take a step back to absorb it all. She gives creative names for the characters, builds unforgettable territories, and wrote a heart-wrenching yet hopeful story. Set in a dystopian world, the author takes us on a fascinating journey as a girl sets her heart on freedom.

Moreover, Jiji is fantastic, and I rooted for her in every step of her journey. She is one of those characters who I will never forget as one of my fictional favorites because of the hardships she suffers. There are so many memorable characters like Silapu, Afarra, and Tiro who compliment Jiji’s story. However, I have two favorite moments in the report. The first being her adventure and friendship with Lucky. Lucky is a beautiful character, and I loved their scenes together as they talk about their lives and deal with Chet and Zinc. My second favorite moments were when Jiji meets Man Cryday, who saves her from the mutants.

However, this book is not a short or easy book to read. There are moments of rape, murder, slavery that will hit you hard. Probably my only minor criticism of the story is that it is very long at times. The author adds many details to how Jiji thinks and reacts to various situations, which the author could have trimmed. Nevertheless, I admire the author for taking writing this novel and am curious to see if there will be a sequel.

Overall, “The Freedom Race” is a book I would recommend if you are in the mood for gripping dystopian adventure fantasy.

    The Nirvana Effect Review:

This book was a remarkable experience! It skillfully weaves together captivating character development, an engaging plot, and thrilling twists that had me completely engrossed – literally on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning each page!

Firstly, the core characters were a true highlight. Among them, Marc stood out as my favorite due to the complexities of his emotions. His internal conflict, torn between the advantages and disadvantages of chip technology and the potential implications of the government’s involvement, added a compelling layer to his persona. Equally, I found myself drawn to Aaron and Sam, who resisted the allure of the chip, yearning for a more authentic and meaningful existence. My heart genuinely went out to Sam when the author explored the dangers of an intrusive surveillance state and the extreme measures the government would employ to maintain control—additional unforgettable moments included the raid on the sanctuary, the intriguing events surrounding Lorraine and Flynn, and Aaron’s confrontation with Doctor Delight.

Moreover, the futuristic dystopian setting of the novel was nothing short of enthralling. Serving as a cautionary tale, it effectively illustrated the potential hazards of excessive reliance on technology and the consequences of forsaking genuine experiences for artificial ones. The exploration of themes like addiction, the erosion of humanity, and the relentless pursuit of happiness in a world dominated by the “chip” phenomenon offered profound food for thought and left a lasting impression on me.

From moments of hope and camaraderie shared by characters like Aaron and Clarissa to the depths of fear and despair experienced by Sam, the author takes the readers on a profound journey. In conclusion, “The Nirvana Effect” is a must-read, delivering a powerful and unsettling vision of the future. It masterfully blends suspense, emotional resonance, and social commentary to create an unforgettable reading experience.

    Erebus Dawning Review:

People who read my reviews know that I am not an avid reader of science fiction and space operas. There are very few books that hold my interest in the genre, and needless to say, I loved “Erebus Dawning.”

There are so many unforgettable moments in this book! Firstly, let me start with the plot. While the first few pages were bumpy, I had no trouble getting into the world. I felt like I was beside Nyx and aboard with the rest of the crew of Thanatos as they encounter space pirates, diffuse bombs, and fight for their lives. The author fills the book with enough action, adventure, romance, and tech-savvy space drama that kept me entertained.

More than the action and adventure, I enjoyed the characters. Nyx is exciting in the lead as she tries to find the Star of Erebus and how it changes her life. I loved the scenes she shares with Kai and how he helps her with her journey. Similarly, there is the character you love to hate like Malcam and The Queen. The author takes the story to another level where we get introduced to AI characters. Moreover, the highlight of the story for me was Nyx’s interactions with Nue-Erebus. Similarly, I also enjoyed Nyx’s interactions with Matthews.

The story ends satisfyingly, making you look forward to the sequel to see what happens. I hope we learn more of the backstory between Nyx and her father, as I felt the author didn’t touch on it much in this book. Overall, “Erebus Dawning” is a beautiful start to the series, and I am for the next installment!

Scarlett would never kill her best friend, perhaps a Citizen, if the situation called for it, but never Rhys. There are quite a few rules in the training center, but a few are the kind that no one broke.

    1. No one sends Greens into Cities without official promotion to Blues
    2. Blues don’t kill each other.

So the question is how Scarlett is going into a City without the proper training? And why does a bizarre, elderly male say Scarlett will kill Rhys? In The Shadow of the Cities details Scarlett’s life in the training center before she is pulled unexpectedly into City life. Without the proper training, she has confusion about these things called “families” and why the Citizens aren’t grateful that she is keeping them safe.

In this dystopian novel, In the Shadow of the Cities, the story is told not from a Citizen’s point of view but a Guard’s. Why do the guards seem to obey the government tirelessly? How can they gun down Citizens mercilessly? Find out as you follow Scarlett on her journey into the Cities.

    About the Author:

Laurel Solorzano has enjoyed writing since middle school, exchanging manuscripts for years with her best friend. Also, after traveling the globe for a time, Laurel set her goal to become a published author. As she works teaching English and Spanish, she writes stories in her free time. Laurel currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband, Yader.

In the Shadow of the Cities Review:

Right from the get-go, “In the Shadow of the Cities” felt different from other dystopian reads.

Scarlett brings the story to life. You wouldn’t think that an average guard like her, whose sole purpose is to protect, would drive this story, but she does it well. She is naive and confused yet enthusiastic to take on a new role in a new place. I enjoyed her dynamics with the team, particularly with Rhys and Devon. The author also adds some shady characters like Darlin and Kendrick. You never know their true intentions, and you feel bad for Scarlett getting involved with them. There are also other characters like Malak and Phan who add nicely to the plot.

As soon as she gets the opportunity to move to City 6, she senses something suspicious. Yet, that doesn’t stop her from being fascinated with the lifestyle and how people live there. I enjoyed the initial scenes where she interacts with the groups and learns about life in City 6. It was also interesting to see how Scarlett and her friends found the society (very similar to ours) different and unique. It made me question few things and want to know more about the dystopian environment where Scarlett grew up. Some of the highlights of the tale were when she learns about babies and when she meets Arwic. Moreover, the author ends the story in a shocking cliffhanger that makes you want to pick the next book up immediately and start reading.

Overall, “In the Shadow of the Cities” is a thrilling dystopian novel that stands apart from others, and I enjoyed reading it.

The Arthur C. Clarke, award-winning author of Children of Time, brings us an extraordinary new space opera about humanity on the brink of extinction and how one man’s discovery will save or destroy us all.

After the earth was destroyed, humanity created a fighting elite to save their species, enhanced humans such as Idris. In the silence of space, they could communicate, mind-to-mind, with the enemy. Then their alien aggressors, the Architects, disappeared – and Idris and his kind became obsolete.

Now, fifty years later, Idris and his crew have discovered something strange abandoned in space. It’s clearly the work of the Architects – but are they returning? And if so, why? Shards of Earth Review:

I hardly read science fiction space operas, but “Shards of Earth” was addictive. The book is huge with 550 pages, but I didn’t notice the time fly by.

At the start, it took me a few pages to immerse myself in the storyline. Initially, a lot of things happen, and I had no idea what was going on. However, I got absorbed in the story from the second chapter and thought it was electrifying when Ollie joins the crew.

Moreover, the author fills the story with action and excitement as the crew navigates various worlds. The team encounters many characters like The Castigar, Piter Uskaro, and The Unspeakable Aklu and Thrennikos. The author also did a fantastic job with the world-building as we navigate from Scintilla and Magda to Tarakuma and Jericho.

Also, I particularly loved the second half of the book! The author builds momentum towards the climax and fills it with exciting adventure. One memorable scene is when the Ogdru attacks them, and Idris has a sense of hopelessness. The story also ends in a cliffhanger that makes you look forward to the next installment of the series,

Similarly, the author also changes perspectives which makes the story fun to read. Initially, the author tells the story between Ollie and Idris’s views. However, we also get narratives from other characters like Havaer and Solace. Speaking of which, I found Havaer one of the most compelling characters in the story (in addition to the crew).

However, sometimes, many characters crossed over that I frequently checked the glossary to recall them. But, apart from that, I enjoyed reading “Shards of Earth” and look forward to the next book!

    Awesome Dog 5000 Review:

What a fun story this book of “Awesome Dog 5000” was. Although I have not read the previous books in the series, I enjoyed reading this one. Although I wish I had read the first two beforehand to learn of Awesome Dog’s origins.

Firstly, kudos to the author for writing the book so creatively. I loved the instruction manual he sets up for new readers vs. returning readers on which page to start reading. He also warns younger readers when the plot might become too scary towards the climax, with a cute photo of a cat. Moreover, he narrates the story in an adorable way that makes you want to fight with the characters.

Speaking of characters, I enjoyed all of them. But, as the book focuses primarily on Ralph, I enjoyed his storyline more than others. It was interesting to see how Marty and Skylar boost his spirits when he feels inferior to them in certain areas. I also loved Tina as the villain. She is crazy, unpredictable, but very entertaining. It was interesting to see what she does as a supervillain, just because she is a fan of superheroes. I thought she was one of the most creative villains I have read in the genre recently.

Similarly, the illustrations are quirky and charming that complements the plot very nicely. I also liked how the author set up clues for the next book and includes fun trivia along the way. The book is very entertaining and would be a hit amongst younger readers. However, I would recommend reading the series from the first book before picking up this one.

Overall, “Awesome Dog 5000 vs. the Kitty-Cat Cyber Squad” is a great adventure tale that will entertain middle graders.

Firstly, I must applaud the creators of this graphic novel for coming up with a creative, futuristic story covering many issues like love, obsession, depression, and addiction. The illustrations are gorgeous, and I loved the weird offerings of the eccentric images each panel had to offer. The story also takes place in a futuristic society that feels so close to home, where you wonder if it could become a reality. On a side note, I loved the unique ways in which the authors end each volume, whether it be a user manual of Phylo or journal entries of Catrin.

Secondly, the characters are also memorable. Catrin is one of the most complex characters I have read lately, and her emotional character was truly impressive. She is desperate, impulsive, and unpredictable, so you don’t know how the story will turn out. The storyline was engrossing, particularly when Hazel comes into the picture and how she impacts Catrin’s life. I was thoroughly enjoying this novel up until 2/3rd into the book.

However, the story had too many convolutions for me to follow towards the end. At some point, I did not know what was happening and followed the tale only to admire the imagery. Furthermore, I also found it odd to see many pictures of Catrin naked, which felt unnecessary. I can imagine how the authors were taking it, but unfortunately, I missed the climax. However, I did appreciate the story for making me think about the purpose of our being. It raised questions about how our lives would be in the future if we happen to live in such a world.

Overall, “Lonely Receiver” is unique science fiction, horror romance worth checking out if you are a fan of the genre.

Two people. Infinite lifetimes. One impossible choice.

Thora and Santi are strangers in a foreign city when a chance encounter intertwines their fates. At once, they recognize in each other a kindred spirit. It is someone who shares their insatiable curiosity, who is longing for more in life than the cards they’ve been dealt. Only days later, though, a tragic accident cuts short their story.

But this is only one of the many connections they share. Like satellites trapped in orbit around each other, Thora and Santi are destined to meet again: as a teacher and prodigy student; a caretaker and dying patient; a cynic and a believer. In numerous lives, they become friends, colleagues, lovers, and enemies. But as blurred memories and strange patterns compound, Thora and Santi come to a shocking revelation—they must discover the truth of their mysterious attachment before their many lives come to one end.

    About the Author:

Catriona Silvey was born in Glasgow and grew up in Perthshire and Derbyshire, which left her with a strange accent and a distrust of flat places. She overcame the latter to do a BA in English at Cambridge and spent the next few years working in scientific publishing. After that, she did a Ph.D. in language evolution in the hope of finding out where all these words came from in the first place.

Following stints in Edinburgh and Chicago, she returned to Cambridge, where she lives with her husband, son, and a very peculiar cat. When she’s not working as a researcher studying meaning in language, she writes fantasy and science fiction. Her short stories have been performed at the Edinburgh International Book Festival and shortlisted for the Bridport Prize.

Meet Me in Another Life Review:

A science-fiction, parallel universe, alternate lives, romance? “Meet Me in Another Life” is a beautiful debut novel by the author, and I could not put it down!

When I started reading this book, I really couldn’t make head or tails as to what was happening. However, halfway into the third chapter, I got the hang of it, and I found it a unique concept. Imagine reuniting with the same soul in alternate lives? The storyline intrigued me about how Thora and Santi would meet in different situations and how their relationship would change. The story makes you wonder if such a possibility could exist in reality. I loved how their personalities and desires remain the same, no matter which lives they lead. Some of my favorite moments are when they look at the stars and have intense conversations about life.

I loved Thora and Santi as individuals and the special bond they shared. They share a romance that is truly out of the world, and you cannot help but hope that things work out for them after all the challenges they faced. I also liked the mystery element as to who Peregrine was and how the plot progressed with him.

However, while I loved the ingenious ways in which Santi and Thora meet one another, at times, I felt the story was not progressing much initially. It’s only halfway into the book, where the plot starts to take shape, and you wonder how it might turn out. But having said that, I could not put this book down! The author tells the story charismatically that you get glued to Santi and Thora’s connections.

Overall, “Meet Me in Another Life” is a memorable debut, and I look forward to reading the author’s future works.

    Orange City Review:

Firstly, I loved the dystopian setting of the novel. It’s been a while since I read a fascinating science-fiction dystopian, and “Orange City” did not disappoint! The author captivatingly writes the world-building, where you feel immediately sense something wrong in the City.

Secondly, I loved the author’s style of writing. The way he wrote Graham and his progression towards the truth was excellent! The storyline glued to me as I wondered if some of Graham’s experiences are a dream or reality. The author writes the descriptions in a dreamlike manner, where like the character, you feel you are in an “Awakened Dream.”

Graham is compelling as the lead and someone I could immediately connect. It was interesting to see how his life changes once he starts using the Pow. Even the supporting characters like Mick, E, and Gayle added nicely to the plot. Moreover, “The Man” is truly one of those devious villains feels invincible. I initially got goosebumps just picturing his appearance and wondered how Graham would face him.

Perhaps the only minor criticism I have towards the story is the romance between Graham and Marlena. I thought it was unnecessary for the plot and could have easily been happy if they were friends. Instead, I would have preferred more scenes between “E” and Graham. “E” felt like an equally dynamic character, and I wanted to see more of him. But I did enjoy the Graham/Gayle/Marlena angle.

Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! Overall, “Orange City” is a gripping dystopian novel, and I look forward to reading some of the author’s other works.
