In the spirit of Lauren Wolk and Ruta Sepetys comes the tale of a girl fighting her way back home after surviving the sinking of the Lusitania. And she learns to think for herself rather than accept the prejudice of wartime.

The year is 1915 and the world is at war. Marta and her father are passengers on the Lusitania, desperately trying to get back home to Germany. While aboard, they must hide their identities or risk as enemy spies. Then a German submarine attacks the Lusitania . They just make it off the sinking ship. The Germans discover her father and detain him.. Marta suddenly finds herself alone in enemy land.

To survive, Marta must draw upon a deep well of bravery she never knew she had. Fortunately, she meets Clare, a young Irish girl who can talk a mile a minute, and her kind family. Believing that Marta is a Dutch refugee, they welcome her into their home. She can’t risk letting her new friends know she’s actually from Germany. And the very nation that the Irish and English are fighting against. But could these people who have shown her nothing but kindness truly be her enemy?

    About the Author:

Anne Blankman parents named her for Anne of Green Gables in the hope of her becoming a writer. She grew up in an old house with gables (gray, unfortunately) in upstate New York. When she wasn’t writing or reading, she was rowing on the crew team, taking ballet lessons, fencing and swimming. She graduated from Union College with degrees in English and history, which comes in handy when she writes historical fiction.

After earning a master’s degree in information science, Anne began working as a youth services librarian. Currently, she lives in southeastern Virginia with her family. When she’s not writing young adult fiction, she’s playing with her daughter, training for races with her husband, working at her amazing library branch, learning to knit (badly), and reading.

Anne Blankman is the author of PRISONER OF NIGHT AND FOG, the first in a three-book deal slated for publication in spring 2014 from Balzer + Bray | HarperCollins. She is represented by Tracey Adams of Adams Literary.

    The Enemy’s Daughter Review:

The Enemy’s Daughter by Anne Blankman begins with an immediate sense of danger and urgency that pulls you right in. The story opens aboard the Lusitania, where Marta and her father, both Germans, find themselves in peril as the ship meets its tragic fate. From the very first pages, the tension is gripping, and you can’t help but wonder whether they will ever be reunited after the chaos that unfolds.

What stands out most is Marta’s emotional journey. Her friendship with Clare is heartfelt and genuine, showing how compassion can bridge divides even in the midst of wartime prejudice. Through Clare and her family, Marta begins to see people in a new light, challenging her own assumptions and grief. Blankman captures Marta’s inner turmoil beautifully, where you truly feel her longing for her parents and the confusion of being caught between two worlds.

The historical setting of World War I is well-portrayed, with enough realism and intensity to spark curiosity in young readers who might want to learn more about the era. There are also a few tense and dramatic moments, especially involving characters like Mr. Evans, that keep the plot moving.

However, the pacing slows considerably in the middle, with several chapters focused on reflection rather than action. While this deepens Marta’s character, it also causes the story to lose momentum. The ending, too, feels somewhat abrupt; while open endings can be powerful, this one leaves you wanting just a bit more closure. And though the cover is striking, it doesn’t quite match the warmth of Marta and Clare’s friendship.

Overall, The Enemy’s Daughter is a touching and thoughtful middle-grade historical novel that explores empathy and courage, even if it leaves a few loose ends untied.

    Helga Review:

“Helga” by Catherine Yu is a delightful and quirky young adult retelling of Mary Shelley’s classic “Frankenstein.” In this imaginative narrative, Yu breathes new life into the well-known story by introducing Helga, a teenager created in a lab, who navigates the complexities of her existence with a blend of innocence and resilience.

Helga, the central character of this book, is a standout feature. Despite her unconventional origins, Yu has managed to imbue her with a depth and relatability that makes it easy to forget she’s not entirely human. Her teenage struggles, curiosities, and growth make her a compelling protagonist. The portrayal of Helga as a teenager rather than a traditional monster is refreshing and endearing, making her journey all the more engaging.

Yu’s world-building is another highlight. The contrast between uptown and downtown adds a dystopian flavor to the setting, enhancing the story’s intrigue. The author vividly depicts the societal divide, creating a rich backdrop against which Helga’s story unfolds.

The characters surrounding Helga are equally fascinating. Penny’s unwavering support and bond with Helga bring warmth and a sense of normalcy to the story. Even Anna, in her complexities, adds depth to the narrative. Clyde and the Professor, the volatile characters with unclear intentions, keep readers on edge, wondering what impact they will have on Helga’s fate.

Although I haven’t read the original “Frankenstein,” “Helga” has certainly piqued my interest. Yu’s retelling has sparked a desire to explore the classic that inspired this modern twist. As a reader, I’m intrigued by the parallels and differences between the two stories.

The story concludes satisfyingly yet leaves enough possibilities for a sequel that I eagerly anticipate. Catherine Yu has crafted a captivating tale with “Helga,” and I eagerly hope she continues Helga’s adventures in future books.

Social anxiety, her parents’ divorce, and tumultuous friendships won’t stop Millie’s pursuit of what she wants–in roller derby and in love. But her own lies might…

Sixteen-year-old Millie Novak is stuck in an “if only” rut. If only she were stronger and faster, maybe her roller derby teammates would take her seriously. If only she had the guts to go back to in-person learning, maybe she’d have a social life. And If only she wasn’t such an awkward mess, maybe she could get the attention of that cute girl on the all-star derby team. And don’t get her started on her family!

After the one-two punch of her beloved older brother’s departure for college and her parents’ overdue split, leaving her lonelier than ever, Millie decides it’s time to reinvent herself. With the help of her new friend Pumpkin and a little bit of deceit, Millie crafts a plan to cement her status on the team and get her crush to fall for her.

But reinvention isn’t easy. Millie’s constantly shown up by show-off teammate Stork, and the only way she can get her crush’s attention is through increasingly elaborate lies. Worse, she begins to suspect Pumpkin is not the supportive friend she’d imagined. Toughest to handle? Realizing the person she’s in love with might not be her longtime crush, after all.

    Mighty Mille Novak Review:

I enjoyed *Mighty Millie Novak* for its relatable and well-developed characters. Millie, the lead, stood out with her insecurities, and I could easily connect with her. While some of her traits could be frustrating at times, the author did a great job explaining them and showing how Millie worked to overcome them once she understood their root causes. I also became a fan of Stork, who brought so much energy to the story.

One of the strengths of this book is how it tackles the challenges that arise when shared interests between friends start to fade, and how friendships can change over time. I wasn’t too fond of Millie’s friend, Pumpkin. Initially, she seemed alright, but as the story progressed, she viewed Millie more as a follower than a true friend. Moreover, Millie’s mistakes stemmed from her desperation to maintain the friendship, even though she didn’t have much experience navigating such relationships.

Also, I liked how the author incorporated the romance. The romance subplot was sweet, and it’s nice how the author doesn’t make it the book’s main focus. *Mighty Millie Novak* is more about coming of age and personal growth; the romance adds a nice touch to Millie’s journey.

However, I wish the author had provided more details about the roller derby rules. My knowledge of the sport was essential, so some terms were initially confusing. It also took me some time to keep track of all the characters due to their nicknames.

Overall, *Mighty Millie Novak* was a fun read that offered a heartfelt friendship, growth, and self-discovery story.

With the dream of Avalon in ruins, Tamsin and her friends are all that stands in the way of Lord Death’s plans to unleash the horrors of Anwnn on the world of the living. As the Wild Hunt carves a bloody path across continents, Tamsin is mustering allies, tracking down powerful artifacts, and traversing into new otherlands in search of a way to stop him.

Legend tells of a “Mirror of Beasts,” powerful enough to trap even Lord Death in its accursed glass, but the mirror is not all that it seems. Tamsin must confront her own darkest secrets if she hopes to tap the mirror’s strength to defeat her enemies.

Arthurian legend bleeds into contemporary action, and scars of the past are torn open anew by a star-crossed love that refuses to go quietly. This riveting conclusion to the Silver in the Bone duology will hold you in its thrall until the very last page.

    The Mirror of Beasts Review:

I absolutely loved reading “The Mirror of Beasts,” the highly anticipated sequel to “Silver in the Bone” by Alexandra Bracken. After the first book ended on a tantalizing cliffhanger, I was eager to dive back into this captivating world and see what awaited Tamsin and Emrys.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this sequel was the introduction of Lord Death as the new villain. His presence added a chilling layer to the story, and I was particularly invested in discovering what would happen to Cabell. The new characters, like the Bonecutter, were engaging and brought fresh dynamics to the narrative.

Moreover, “The Mirror of Beasts” masterfully balances moments that will make you laugh, shock you, and even bring you to tears. Bracken has a talent for evoking a wide range of emotions, making the reading experience genuinely immersive. The relationship between Tamsin and Emrys was a highlight, and adding side characters such as Caitriona, Olwen, Madrigal, and Nash enriched the story further.

Also, one of the highlights for me was how Bracken delved deeper into the King Arthur storyline. The rich mythological elements were woven seamlessly into the plot, adding depth and intrigue. The book’s conclusion was satisfying.

Overall, “The Mirror of Beasts” is a fantastic sequel that builds on the strengths of “Silver in the Bone.” It offers a perfect blend of adventure, emotion, and mythology, making it a must-read for fans of the series. Alexandra Bracken has once again crafted a tale that captivates and enchants.

All along, Amari Peters has never stopped believing her missing brother, Quinton, is alive. Not even when the police told her otherwise, or when she got in trouble for standing up to bullies who said he was gone for good.

So when she finds a ticking briefcase in his closet, containing a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain the secretive organization holds the key to locating Quinton. All she has to do is to only wrap her head around the idea of magicians, fairies, aliens, and other supernatural creatures all being real.

Now she must compete for a spot against kids who’ve known about magic their whole lives. No matter how hard she tries, Amari can’t seem to escape their intense doubt and scrutiny—especially once her supernaturally enhanced talent is deemed “illegal.” With an evil magician threatening the supernatural world and her own classmates thinking she’s an enemy, Amari has never felt more alone. But if she doesn’t stick it out and pass the tryouts, she may never find out what happened to Quinton.

Amari and the Night Brothers Review:

Amari and the Night Brothers” is a fantastic start to the series, and I loved every minute of it!

Let me start with the characters. Amari Peters is a fantastic protagonist. I love how she faces her fears and finds the courage on her quest to find her brother Quentin. She also forms a beautiful friendship with Elsie. Else is terrific as the supporting character, and I loved their bond.

Similarly, even Lara and Kirsten are fun in a negative role. I also adored Agent Fiona! Even Moreau makes a formidable villain with an aura of mystery, and he reminded me a bit of Hannibal Lecter.

The author also narrates the story in a gripping manner where there is never a dull moment. For instance, there are so many moments filled with excitement and adventure, like when Amari and Dylan go on the treasure hunt or Amari tackles the water python. I enjoyed the various courses that they had to pass to become junior agents. Similarly, the world-building is impressive, where you have an organized structure and mystical characters like the sasquatch and the Big Foot.

Moreover, the author also constructed the first book correctly, where he concludes the plot nicely but still leaves a few questions unanswered and sets the pace for the next adventure. The story has mystery, adventure, magic, and filled with excitement. Furthermore, I have to give props to the author for not involving an unnecessary romance element between any of the characters. I was sure that there might be some hormonal spurts amongst the cast through some form of infatuation. But, the author stayed clear from that and focused on the plot, which was perfect.

Overall, I loved everything about this book and cannot wait for the next installment!

    Creatures of Chaos Review:

“Creatures of Chaos” is a fun start to the “Chaos” series, and I enjoyed the concept.

Firstly, I loved how creative the author got with the tale, and I felt I was reading a mix of “Stranger Things” meets “One Tree Hill.” The author does a lovely job of blending young adult drama with paranormal elements, and it was fun to see how our protagonists tackled their newfound powers. Each character stands out with their unique personality and ability, and it was a treat to see how they reacted to the situation and the villain who also learns of it and targets them.

Secondly, I liked Casey in the lead and her dynamics with Max, Debbie, Parker, and Finch. Moments that stood out from the story are when she bonds with Max over the Venus Flytrap or her conflicted relationship with Debbie. The author also added elements from Greek Mythology elements to the tale, and it was fun to see how it affected our characters.

Moreover, there is never a dull moment because so much happens in each chapter. Even if you skip a sentence, you miss something important. The author packed a lot into this novella, and I wondered what would happen next.

However, on that topic, my only criticism of the story is that the book needed to be longer and faster. It would have been interesting if the author added more details to the world-building or how the teens got their powers. The pacing is usually fast; hence, we didn’t get time to invest in the characters, including the villain.

Apart from that, I enjoyed “Creatures of Chaos” and am keen on reading the next book in the series to find the next adventure that awaits our group.

Thirteen-year-old Julia would much rather work with horses at the rescue barn than worry about things like dating and makeup. But when her BFF meets a boy at camp, Julia’s determined not to get left behind. Then Julia finds out Tyler’s true plan, and her world is turned upside down. She fiercely guards her secret, but could her silence allow her friends to fall into the same trap?

In this timely, heartfelt debut, author Sydney Dunlap tells a story of a middle-school girl who narrowly escapes becoming a victim of human trafficking and must find her way toward hope and healing after this traumatic event.

    About the Author:

    It Happened on Saturday Review:

Firstly, this book is one that all tweens and young adults should read. The author has beautifully showcased the dangers of human trafficking and how even someone knowledgeable can be impressionable at that age and trust anyone. Moreover, this is not just a book for teens; anyone of any age can feel inspired by reading, as trafficking could happen to anyone if they fall for the wrong person.

Julia is excellent in the role, and I loved how the author portrayed her realistically. Even after the incident, you see how self-conscious and guilty Julia feels for putting herself in that situation and how society can ostracise her even though she is the victim. Another reason why I enjoyed this story is that the author also gives valuable tips on how to deal with stress and anxiety. I loved reading about the therapy sessions that Julia attends and found them helpful to implement in my life.

The author also wrote the supporting cast well. I enjoyed Julia’s bond with Nori and how she feels like the third wheel when Nori finds someone new. Even with characters like Maria and Gabi, it was interesting to see how Julia tested fresh waters when she searched for new friends. I also loved the complex relationship between Julia and her parents and how she has trouble bonding with her mother for various reasons. One of my favorite moments was when her father talked to her about his past experiences, and they connected.

Overall, “It Happened on Saturday” is a realistic middle-grade fiction, and I recommend everyone check this out.

Under the rule of a tyrant,  there was a division of Americans  by race and class. Hate and inequality reigned. Hispanics and Blacks had no choice but to overthrow the government and exterminate the Caucasian “Europe” race. The few Europes who managed to survive are now classified as Lower Residents and treated as slaves to rebuild the New America—The Southern Region.

Sixteen-year-old Saige, whose parents broke the “purity clause”, pays for their mistake far after their publicized executions. As an Impure, she now must escape the tyranny and sneak over the Border to freedom. Avi’s chance to succeed her father as General, is conflicted by her loyalty to her authoritarian Elite family and her love for a Europe rebel. Leo, a Lower Resident worker who rebels believe God has sent, will lead them to salvation against the Union. These three teenage adversaries from different castes forcefully rely on one another to thwart a dictator’s plans for mass genocide.

And they’re about to start a revolution.

    About the Author:

Leah Vernon is an international bombshell with a double masters in business and creative writing. Her name has been in high-profile campaigns such as Ugg “Feel You” and Fitbit’s “Feel Your Power”.

She’s the first visibly plus-size Hijabi influencer to hit the mainstream with over four million views combined. She’s also an author of The Union and Unashamed: Musings of a Fat, Black Muslim.

Leah V isn’t your regular influencer; She’s a disruptor, a trendsetter, and a changemaker in her perspective fields. She began her blogging journey back in 2013, when she fell deep into disordered eating and noticed that there was no one that looked like her that was considered “worthy” or “beautiful”. And, frankly, she was tired of sucking her stomach in around her skinny friends.

With a grainy android phone and clothes from the clearance racks, she began paving her own way through the fashion industry. She used her fat, Black, and unapologetic Muslim body as a rebellion. Beauty is NOT one size fits all. She moved to New York and began smashing glass ceilings. To date, she has worked with renowned brands like Target, Dove, and Amazon just to name a few.

After years of brands telling her she had no place in the fashion world, that she was not “marketable” enough, Leah V carved her own beauty standards.

    The Union Review:

“The Union” is a wonderful young adult, science fiction, dystopian about the cruel world between the Impure and the Elites, and I could not put it down.

The first aspect I liked about the tale is how the author included all the elements of the regular dystopian novel but also made the characters so enigmatic that they made it feel special. I loved Saige and Avi’s storylines and how the author toggled between the two. Both are strong, show immense bravery when faced with challenges, and are the tale’s highlight.

What also surprised me was how raw the author wrote some of the scenes. I got goosebumps seeing how cruel punishments Saige has to face while people like Avi and Jade lead privileged life because they are the elite. My heart went to Saige, and I was at the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen to her. Similarly, Avi’s storylines also intrigued me because of how different she is from the others, and she is not afraid to stand up and do what she feels is right.

The supporting cast also added nicely, and some of them were memorable. For instance, characters like Lox and Mama Seeya made the story stand out. Similarly, Head Gardner also gave me the chills, and I wondered how crueler the Union would get on Saige.

Moreover, the author immediately sets up the adrenaline. The few chapters dive into action and adventure as Saige gets arrested under pretenses. The author has a dynamic way of engaging you in the storyline and is now one of my favorite authors after this book.

Overall, “The Union ” is a great Young Adult Dystopian novel, and I highly recommend it!

    Secrets of the Deep Review:

I loved reading “Secrets of the Deep” and thought it was a wondering start to the “The Mermaid Chronicles” series.

Let’s begin with Cordy. I liked how the author portrayed the character and how she tried to sort out her feelings of grief and loss for her family and her romance with Wade. Wade was also a question mark initially because I didn’t know his intentions. The author wrote their dynamic cutely (albeit, at times, it felt a bit rushed), and I wondered how their relationship would survive once the secrets started coming out.

Secondly, I enjoyed how the author built the world of mermaids and selachiis, including the legend of Atlantis, with adventure and fantasy elements. The author has blended the myth of the mermaids yet created her unique world. Many moments stood out for me, like when Cordy has her first scare in the bathtub, what happens to Trent in the surfing competition, or when the group comes up with their action plan to set things right.

Thirdly, the cast of characters also made the story so entertaining. Trent and Dylan brought their charm, and I loved Maya, Trent, and Cordy as the trio of friends. While Maya might not have a significant role compared to others, I loved her fondness for Mermaids, and the various shark facts, prophecies, and other trivia she spoke. Perhaps the only very minor criticism is how the book is so fast at times that you don’t get a chance to see Cordy adjust to her feelings when something shocking happens in her life.

The story ends nicely and sets the pace for the next book, where you wonder what other adventures await our characters. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am excited to see how it continues.

    THERE IS HUNTING OF MERMAIDS…

They are no longer safe in the human world…

When they imprison, one of her closest mermaid friends in a science lab for investigation, Cordelia insists on taking up the quest to find the lost island of Atlantis, a sanctuary for all the water species. But the dragon kings guard the island. They are an ancient and formidable race with a determination to keep it for themselves.

Together with her best friends and her boyfriend, Wade, they must travel to distant pockets of the earth to collect the three magical jewels that open the portal to Atlantis.

But no one remembers how the jewels work. The instructions are non-existent, and tensions are rife as Wade’s ex-girlfriend, Stephanie, appears on the scene. Plus, Cordelia must learn to harness her own emerging powers and discover if she really is the fire mermaid.

With the support of Wade’s parents, Stephanie determines to win him back. Cordelia’s heart breaks as she watches the love of her life waver. They must be united in their quest, or the jewels will refuse to reveal themselves.

If they can’t repair their broken relationship and defeat the dragon kings, the mermaids will be captured by the humans and face the threat of extinction.

    Quest For Atlantis Review:

Wow, “Quest for Atlantis” was a fantastic sequel compared to the first book. From sea witches to dragon kings and Seattle to submarines, this book just had everything! The sequel feels so vastly different from the first book. It’s as if the author decided to amp up the adrenaline, pack the book with adventure and romance, and give it more oomph.

Firstly, let’s talk about the drama. Oh my goodness, so much activity was happening with our core characters! I wondered if their relationship would survive the secrets and scandals. I loved Stephanie in the picture to stir up Wade and Cordy’s relationship. Similarly, the Dylan, Trent, and Maya triangle was so good, and I liked how Maya got importance in the tale. Even Cordy’s relationship with Dylan is intriguing, and you see the strain it causes on Cordy.

Secondly, the author fills us with adventure as they go to save a mermaid from the lab, fight creatures in a cave and encounter a sea witch, to name a few. Moreover, I enjoyed how the author built on the fantasy world, where we see people hunting down mermaids like a prize as social media spreads their existence. There are so many shocking twists that I didn’t see at all, especially toward the end.

Thirdly, I adored some of the new additions. Gal is one of my favorite characters in the story, and I enjoyed how complex the author made his storyline. Similarly, even Merida is memorable and gets more presence. There were minor consistencies (like how we don’t hear about the ashrays), but the story is so good that I ignored it.

Overall, I loved this book and hope the author continues the series.
