    Small Town Monsters Review:

As a fan of horror movies like “The Conjuring,” I devoured “Small Town Monsters,” and could not put it down.

I loved the way the author executed this book. She beautifully mixes the emotional moments between Max and Vera and the scary experiences they face. The author also sets the atmosphere of Roaring Creek in a creepy manner, where you see the possibility of many supernatural tales taking place, like the Fear Street books. This book has moments of pure horror that you would expect from movies “The Exorcist” or “The Conjuring” flawlessly made for the young adult genre.

Moreover, the author also adds in some eerie scenes, like when Max sees his mother smoking with strangers or Vera sees the skeleton in the fog. The Angel of Tears had me to the edge of my seat, and I wondered how the author would navigate the tale. I could not put this book down, especially when Father Chuck enters the story in the second half.

Vera and Max both stand out in the story. I cannot even imagine how self-conscious Vera would feel if she were real, and I admire how the author brought out her emotions. Vera knows that people talk about her because of her parents, yet the girl doesn’t have her parents’ skills. On the other hand, Vera is brave for opening to Max and trying to help him out in whatever way possible. Similarly, I adored Max for how protective he is towards Chloe and takes on so much responsibility. Chloe is adorable, and I had some spine-tingling moments when their mother interacts with her. This book was just perfect!

Overall, I loved “Small Town Monsters” and hope the author writes many more such Young adult horror novels.

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Lori M. Lee’s middle grade debut about a lonely Hmong girl who discovers she’s a powerful shaman warrior in this fantasy inspired by Southeast Asian mythology.

Pahua Moua has a bit of a reputation for being a weirdo. A lonely eleven-year-old Hmong girl with the unique ability to see spirits, she spends her summer days babysitting her little brother and playing with her best friend, a cat spirit no one else can see.

One day Pahua accidentally untethers an angry spirit from the haunted bridge in her neighborhood–whoops. When her brother suddenly falls sick and can’t be awoken, Pahua fears that the bridge spirit has stolen his soul. She returns to the scene of the crime with her aunt’s old shaman tools, hoping to confront the spirit and demand her brother’s return. Instead, she summons a demon.

Thankfully, a warrior shaman with a bit of an attitude problem shows up at the last minute and saves her butt. With the help of this guide, Pahua will have to find her way through the spirit worlds and rescue her brother’s soul before it’s too late. Little does she know she’ll have her own discoveries to make along the way. . . .

With its unforgettable characters, unique nature-based magic system, breathtaking twists and reveals, and climactic boss battle, this story based on Hmong oral tradition offers everything a fantasy lover could want.

    About the Author:

Lori M. Lee is the author of speculative novels and short stories. Her books include PAHUA AND THE SOUL STEALER (Disney/Rick Riordan Presents), FOREST OF SOULS and the sequel BROKEN WEB (Page Street), and more.

Pahua and the Soul Stealer Review:

“Pahua and the Soul Stealer” is an excellent addition to the Rick Riordan series and does not disappoint!

Firstly, I had no idea about the Hmong Culture until I read this book. Right from the beginning, I liked Pahua and was intrigued by her powers to see spirits. I loved her connection with Miv. Miv is adorable as her cat spirit, with the snarky, humorous dialogues. As the story progresses, Pahua also meets Zhong, and they go on an epic adventure quest to save Pahua’s brother Matt. The author excitingly wrote the book! Each chapter ends with a shocking cliffhanger that makes you unable to put the book down and continue reading. Many scenes made the story memorable, like when the demon initially attacks her or when she and Zhong move into the echo, and when they meet Spike. From waterfalls to tunnels to mountains, Pahua experiences traveling across all kinds of platforms to help her brother.

Pahua is excellent in the lead. In the beginning, she is more of a wallflower where other girls like Hailey overshadow her. But as the story progresses, you see her confidence shine. Moreover, I liked her because she doesn’t use brutal force to attack whoever threatens her in the story. I like how she uses other skills like persuasion and bargaining to get out of a situation. Zhong and Pahua have contrasting personalities, and they both work so well together. The story is magical as they come across various forms of spirits. Xov is also a formidable character.

My only minor criticism is how the author could have used characters like June to a higher potential. Apart from that, I loved “Pahua and the Soul Stealer” and found it a promising start to the series.

The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities Review:

“The Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities” is a creative collection of tales featuring some of our favorite characters!

“Beware the Grove of True Love” was my favorite! I love the Aru Shah series, and this one was awesome! The author takes the classic Indian tale of Dushyanta and Shakuntala and weaves it into Aru’s world, and I loved it! My second favorite was “Bruto and the Freaky Flower,” as I love Paola Santiago, and it was exciting to see her fight the scary chupacabras and save Bruto with Dante. My third favorite story was “The Demon Drum.” Even though I haven’t read “Race to the Sun,” I loved the plot surrounding the curse and how it connected with the drums. Davery and Nizhoni also made a nice pair. “The Loneliest Demon” and “My Life as a Child Outlaw” was also memorable.

“Calamity Juice” was a mixed bag because I have not read the Sal and Gabi series. However, I did find the story very creative as Sal and Gabi search for Gladis, and we meet characters like Norberto and Yasmany along the way. Similarly, even “The Cave of Doom” was fun as Brooke and Zane encounter a demon even though I have not read the Storm Runner series.

However, there were stories that I had not read the original books of, like Dragon Pearl, and still enjoyed “The Initiation.” This story was entertaining as Min starts her assignment on the Thousand Worlds Domestic Security Ministry. I loved Duri in the story. Similarly, Gum Baby was hilarious, and I laughed at the scene where the room gets covered with spoiled honey.

Overall, this book would be perfect if you are already familiar with the characters before reading the tale. Else, it might be a hit or miss with some readers.

    Lies Like Wildfire Review:

“Lies Like Wildfire” is a fast-paced young adult thriller filled with lies, deceptions, and secrets that will have you glued to the page.

This book was different, in my opinion, because I was not too fond of any of the characters. In most books, there is one character who I can gravitate towards in the tale. But, in this book, it’s so difficult to like the group because of how they behave. Yet, the story is so gripping that I could not put it down. The first half of the story is exciting! The author describes the situation in such detail that you easily visualize yourself with the group. I was wondering how they would all react once they see the fatalities rising.

However, the author then takes the story to another exciting level in the second half when Violet disappears. What happened to her and why? The author adds shocking twists and turns as Hannah finds an item of clothing that reveals something new. Moreover, she ends the story in a cliffhanger where you have to find out what’s happening in the next chapter. The story was so addictive!

In addition to this, I also liked how the author portrayed Hannah’s emotions. It was interesting to see how the guilt starts to tear Hannah inside, yet she cannot reveal it without getting into serious trouble. Hannah doesn’t know who she can trust anymore, even within the group. Moreover, I liked the storyline between Hannah’s conflicting feelings with Drummer and Violet. Being that they are teenagers, it was nice to see some YA romantic angst between the characters. The story also had a shocking twist that I did not expect.

Overall, “Lies Like Wildfire” is a great young adult mystery thriller, and I enjoyed reading it!

Take Me with You When You Go Review:

“Take Me with You When You Go” is an emotional, heartfelt story about two siblings and how their life changes through email conversations.

Firstly, I loved the way the author told the story in an Epistolary approach via emails. I love reading books in this format because it makes me feel personally connected to the characters.

The story intrigued me from page one as Bea goes missing and her friends and family communicate with her via email. I loved the bond Bea and Ezra shared in the book. More than Bea, Ezra was my favorite character. The author depicted Ezra’s emotions realistically where we see him angry at Bea for not informing him yet also worried for her safety. Moreover, he goes through quite a lot when he starts receiving emails from a person he could connect with later in the story. As the story progresses, the authors begin unraveling the family dynamics with quite a few interesting twists that I did not expect.

Moreover, the authors made me feel various emotions while reading the book. Some moments were profound, like how they reminisced about being The Great Pretenders or how small they sometimes feel when looking at things in perspective. The author also adds a level of mystery where we start to wonder who Bea’s MG (Mystery Guy) is and how he connects to the storyline. Moreover, we don’t know why Bea has run away, so I was curious to see how the author revealed this as the story progressed.

However, the story did lag sporadically, where nothing much happens in the first half. The second half of the book was hard to put down because of the revelations. Overall, I enjoyed reading “Take Me with You When You Go” and found it a beautiful young-adult contemporary novel.

A teen girl disappears from her small town deep in the bayou, where magic festers beneath the surface of the swamp like water rot, in this chilling debut supernatural thriller for fans of Natasha Preston, Karen McManus, and Rory Power.

La Cachette, Louisiana, is the worst place to be if you have something to hide.

This tiny town, where seventeen-year-old Grey spends her summers, is the self-proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World–and the place where Elora Pellerin, Grey’s best friend, disappeared six months earlier.

Grey can’t believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened. But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something – her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave.

When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou – a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town’s bloody history – Grey realizes that La Cachette’s past is far more present and dangerous than she’d ever understood. Suddenly, she doesn’t know who she can trust. In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent–and La Cachette’s dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart.

    Dark and Shallow Lies Review:

“Dark and Shallow Lies” is an incredible YA mystery set in a town of secrets, and I loved it!

The author sets up the atmosphere intricately from the first page. Ever since Greycie comes back to find out what happened to Elora, she starts to see how people react. Grey is fantastic in the lead as she talks to her friends to find out more. The author wrote her feelings of guilt, sadness, and anger beautifully. Moreover, I loved her scenes with Hart. Hart possesses a remarkable quality to feel other people’s emotions, and he brought the pages to life. Even the supporting characters like Zale and Evie add nicely to the tale. On a side note, I adored Grey’s relationship with Honey.

The author also ends each chapter with a cliffhanger that makes you want to continue reading. I could not put this book down and finished it in one sitting. Moreover, I loved the whole setting of the bayou and the haunted feel that iLa Cachette gave. There are moments of unease and terror right from the beginning when Wrynn tells her about the rougarou. The author intensifies the story as it progresses, leading to a gripping climax as the storm approaches. Moreover, the author nicely adds subplots like Greycie’s mother, her powers, and the plot with Dempsey Fontenot. I also enjoyed the touch of romance and the potential love triangle between Zale and Hart.

My only minor criticism of the story is that I guessed who the culprit was way ahead of time. It was not very shocking when the author reveals who was behind the incidents. Nevertheless, I found the story to be gripping and beautiful.

Overall, “Dark and Shallow Lies” is a haunting, tragic, yet beautiful young adult mystery novel, and I loved it!

A modern-day Practical Magic about love, loss, and embracing the mystical.

It’s been one year since Edie’s mother died. But her ghost has never left.

According to her GG, it’s tradition that the dead of the Mitchell family linger with the living. It’s just as much a part of a Mitchell’s life as brewing cordials or talking to plants. But Edie, whose pain over losing her mother is still fresh, has no interest in her family’s legacy as local “witches.”

When her mother’s teenage journal tumbles into her life, her family’s mystical inheritance becomes once and for all too hard to ignore. It takes Edie on a scavenger hunt to find objects that once belonged to her mother, each one imbued with a different memory. Every time she touches one of these talismans, it whisks her to another entry inside the journal—where she watches her teenage mom mourn, love, and hope just as Edie herself is now doing. Maybe, just maybe, Edie hopes, if she finds every one of these objects, she can finally make peace with her loss and put the past to rest for good. But this journey to stake her independence from her family may actually show Edie who she truly is…and the beautiful gifts that come with being just a little different.

Of feathers, shadows, and talismans, you will read
and you will fall in love with “Edie in Between.”

I honestly love books that deal with crystal balls, tarot cards, and anything that falls in that spectrum. I thought the author did a lovely job in telling the tale because it felt fresh and new. Everything about the story, from Edie finding the journal entries to Maura’s flashbacks, was terrific. The story takes off once Edie starts going to the shadowed land. I thought some of the best moments were her reactions when she comes across the items. Some of the scenes are haunting and beautiful, like Edie trying to adjust her feelings for Rhia. Some scenes were also terrifying, like when feathers protrude from a character’s mouth, and shadows twist their body. But the story was just incredible through and through. I also adored the supporting characters like Tess and GG.

Similarly, the author also wrote both the characters wonderfully! Edie and Maura are distinct in their way, and I loved what each of them brought to the story. Maura is fascinating, and I loved the nuances as she deals with losing her father and her emotions for Jamie. Similarly, Edie shines in the story as she tries to learn more about her mother. I also enjoyed how the author toggles between Maura and Edie’s storyline. There are quite a few twists and turns that I did not expect, which made the story memorable. Moreover, I also liked how the author creatively wrote the story. For instance, I found the instructions on using the crystal for the ritual very creative.

Overall, “Edie in Between” surprised me and turned out to be a magical story.

For fans of Us and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comes a witchy story full of black girl magic as one girl’s dark ability to summon the dead offers her a chance at a new life, while revealing to her an even darker future.

Katrell doesn’t mind talking to the dead; she just wishes it made more money. Clients pay her to talk to their deceased loved ones, but it isn’t enough to support her unemployed mother and Mom’s deadbeat boyfriend-of-the-week. Things get worse, when a ghost warns her to stop the summonings or she’ll “burn everything down.” Katrell is willing to call them on their bluff, though. She has no choice. What do ghosts know about eating peanut butter for dinner?

However, when her next summoning accidentally raises someone from the dead, Katrell realizes that a live body is worth a lot more than a dead apparition. And, warning or not, she has no intention of letting this lucrative new business go.

But magic doesn’t come for free, and soon dark forces are closing in on Katrell. The further she goes, the more she risks the lives of not only herself, but those she loves. Katrell faces a choice: resign herself to poverty, or confront the darkness before it’s too late.

    About the Author:

Jessica Lewis is a Black author and receptionist from Alabama. She has a degree in English Literature and Animal Science (the veterinarian plan did not work out). She lives with her way-funnier-than-her grandmother, who answers all of her wild questions about ghosts and zombies and werewolves (even if she’s annoyed sometimes haha!). When she isn’t writing or working she enjoys watching cooking shows or HGTV-type home shows..

    Bad Witch Burning Review:

This book was creepy, twisted, emotional, and entertaining, and I loved reading it.

To begin with, I enjoyed the premise of the story as Katrell uses her powers to make money. The highlight of the book was Katrell. My heart went out to her throughout the story. She needs to deal with deadbeats like Gerald and also protect her mom, and balance school. While things go as planned, Katrell soon realizes how her actions have devastating consequences surrounding the Revenants. For a young adult fantasy, the author wrote her so realistically. It was also interesting to see how her powers affected her mentally and physically.

Moreover, Katrell and Will are so good together as they support each other over all the events that transpire. Also, I enjoyed Katrell’s scenes with Mike. On a side note, I found Conrad adorable irrespective of what happened.

Similarly, I liked the author’s writing style because she creates an atmosphere of unease. Although there are some gory moments in the story, for the most time, the story has a sense of dread that something terrible will happen. The author also added a few surprising twists and turns that I did not anticipate. Some of them revolved around Gerald and Marquis. I was creeped out by some of the ramifications of how the people that Katrell brings back behave. At the same time, the author also focuses on Katrell, her family, particularly her complex relationship with her mother. The author paces the story nicely, which leads to an exciting climax.

Overall, “Bad Witch Burning” is an emotional and exciting young adult fantasy with witches and magic.

Riverdale meets Stephen King in the terrifying new thriller from the author of Harrow Lake.

The town of Burden Falls drips with superstition, from rumors of its cursed waterfall to Dead-Eyed Sadie, the disturbing specter who haunts it. Ava Thorn grew up right beside the falls, and since a horrific accident killed her parents a year ago, she’s is having nightmares in which Sadie comes calling—nightmares so chilling, Ava feels as if she’ll never wake up. But when someone brutally murders close to Ava and she’s the primary suspect, she begins to wonder if the stories might be more than legends—and if the ghost haunting her dreams might be terrifyingly real. Whatever secrets Burden Falls is hiding, there’s a killer on the loose . . . with a vendetta against the Thorns.

    Burden Falls  Review:

“Burden Falls” was excellent. It has the perfect YA suspense novel with a touch of a gothic, supernatural murder mystery.

To begin with, I have to commend the author for writing the story so creatively. The author spins the tale in such a crafty manner that you don’t know what will happen. There are so many twists and turns where you cannot predict the story. Also, people who you would never think of being killed end up with shocking deaths one after the other. The author makes you think if a supernatural force causes the murders or if someone is behind them. Furthermore, I am not giving any spoilers, but the ending completely threw me off and shocked me. I love when stories come up and surprise me in the end, and this book delivers this flawlessly.

The author also wrote the characters nicely. I liked Ava in the lead and the various emotions she has to deal with when the murders occur. It’s not easy for her because the detectives also find her the prime suspect. There are some creepy characters like Hamish and Liam who make the story even eerier. However, I also liked characters like Ford, Dominic, and Freya. Each of them makes the story exciting with the way they respond to Ava. On a side note, I also enjoyed Dead Eyed Sadie’s background storyline and wondered how that connected with Ava. The author also adds some nice YA romance into the mix, although I will not spoil it by mentioning who Ava gets romantic with.

Overall, I loved reading “Burden Falls” and felt it was one of the best Young Adult Horror thrillers of this year.

When a high stakes boarding school prank war leads to a fake dating scheme, two teens must decide if they are ready to take the ultimate risk — falling in love.

Pranking mastermind Doe and her motley band of Weston girls are determined to win the century-long war against Winfield Academy before the clock ticks down on their senior year. But their headmistress announces that The Weston School will merge with its rival the following year. Since then,  their longtime feud spirals into chaos.

Doe wants to protect the school that has been her safe haven since her parents’ divorce. So she puts together a plan to prove once and for all that Winfield boys and Weston girls just don’t mix. She starts with a direct hit at Three, Winfield’s boy king and her nemesis. In a desperate move to win, Doe strikes a bargain with Three’s cousin, Wells.  If he fake dates her to get under Three’s skin, she’ll help him get back his rightful family heirloom from Three.

As the pranks escalate, so do her feelings for her fake boyfriend. And Doe spins lie after lie to keep up her end of the deal. But when a teacher long suspected of inappropriate behavior messes with a younger Weston girl, Doe has to decide what’s more important: winning a rivalry, or joining forces to protect something far more critical than a prank war legacy.

This May End Badly is a story about friendship, falling in love, and crossing pretty much every line presented to you—and how to atone when you do.

    About the Author:

Samantha Markum was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where she got her great literary start writing Newsies fan fiction in middle school. She went to high school and college in Florida, and eventually moved to Los Angeles, just so she could complain about how much she missed In-N-Out once she left.

She currently lives in her hometown of St. Louis. This May End Badly is her debut novel.

    This May End Badly Review:

If you want to read a witty, hilarious, and cute story, then “This May End Badly” is the perfect book to pick up.

Firstly, I must say that I love the author’s imagination. I loved how smart and bold the story felt, and lighthearted and romantic at the same time. There are many reasons to appreciate this book. For starters, I loved the whole concept of pranking. There are many reasons to appreciate this book. For starters, I loved the whole concept of pranking. Doe ups her game to prove that the merge between Weston and Winfield will not be successful, and it was hilarious to see how she came up with her plots.

Moreover, Doe rocks in the lead! She is not afraid to stand for what she feels is correct and does everything to prove her point. True, she doesn’t always make the right decision, which gets her into trouble, but I loved her moxie attitude. Also, I thought the entire supporting cast, like Sumi, Jade, or Gemma, added value to the scene. At the same time, the romance between Doe and Wells is fantastic. You can see how Doe starts to thaw in the presence of Wells. The author writes their chemistry so smoothly, where you see them move from enemy to friends with their charismatic conversations. Also, the author adds exciting moments to the tale, like what happens at Fall Fest, or sneak into the Wellborn’s estate, or when they find the campus vandalized.

Similarly, the author also adds critical moments, especially towards the end, where the story touches on assault. I thought the author handled the subject well. Overall, “This May End Badly” is an innovative, young adult, contemporary romance which feels fresh and bold, and I enjoyed it.
