A teen girl disappears from her small town deep in the bayou, where magic festers beneath the surface of the swamp like water rot, in this chilling debut supernatural thriller for fans of Natasha Preston, Karen McManus, and Rory Power.

La Cachette, Louisiana, is the worst place to be if you have something to hide.

This tiny town, where seventeen-year-old Grey spends her summers, is the self-proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World–and the place where Elora Pellerin, Grey’s best friend, disappeared six months earlier.

Grey can’t believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened. But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something – her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave.

When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou – a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town’s bloody history – Grey realizes that La Cachette’s past is far more present and dangerous than she’d ever understood. Suddenly, she doesn’t know who she can trust. In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent–and La Cachette’s dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart.

Dark and Shallow Lies Review:

“Dark and Shallow Lies” is an incredible YA mystery set in a town of secrets, and I loved it!

The author sets up the atmosphere intricately from the first page. Ever since Greycie comes back to find out what happened to Elora, she starts to see how people react. Grey is fantastic in the lead as she talks to her friends to find out more. The author wrote her feelings of guilt, sadness, and anger beautifully. Moreover, I loved her scenes with Hart. Hart possesses a remarkable quality to feel other people’s emotions, and he brought the pages to life. Even the supporting characters like Zale and Evie add nicely to the tale. On a side note, I adored Grey’s relationship with Honey.

The author also ends each chapter with a cliffhanger that makes you want to continue reading. I could not put this book down and finished it in one sitting. Moreover, I loved the whole setting of the bayou and the haunted feel that iLa Cachette gave. There are moments of unease and terror right from the beginning when Wrynn tells her about the rougarou. The author intensifies the story as it progresses, leading to a gripping climax as the storm approaches. Moreover, the author nicely adds subplots like Greycie’s mother, her powers, and the plot with Dempsey Fontenot. I also enjoyed the touch of romance and the potential love triangle between Zale and Hart.

My only minor criticism of the story is that I guessed who the culprit was way ahead of time. It was not very shocking when the author reveals who was behind the incidents. Nevertheless, I found the story to be gripping and beautiful.

Overall, “Dark and Shallow Lies” is a haunting, tragic, yet beautiful young adult mystery novel, and I loved it!
