Jealousy can be deadly.

Longtime bachelor Ron Burley has a rule against messing around with married women in his rural upstate New York town, but sassy, lovely Lavender has convinced him to break it. Their steamy affair sets someone off, but it isn’t Lavender’s clueless husband—it’s Marta, Burley’s clingy childhood friend and ex-lover.

Marta knows Burley is on the verge of going broke, so she secretly tries to lure him with a lucrative job offer and some enticing fringe benefits. Although he’s sorely tempted, Burley’s

afraid to trust Marta due to the sketchy circumstances surrounding their bitter breakup years ago; but this might be his only chance to get back at her for what she did.

Suspicious of her boyfriend’s romantic history, Lavender visits a psychic for a tarot card reading in a creepy cabin in the Adirondack woods. Watch your back, the psychic warns her. Burley and Marta aren’t the innocent people they’re pretending to be. Someone’s out for revenge, and this love triangle could turn deadly.

Down A Bad Road Review:

This book was a fun thrill ride because of the mind games that most of the characters play with one another. Most cast members have ulterior motives, and you wonder if their decisions could turn fatal for someone else.

Marta really stood out as my favorite character in the story. She adds a captivating element to the plot, keeping you guessing about her next moves. Likewise, characters like Penelope, who make brief appearances, inject a sense of mystery with their fortune-telling abilities. Richard also plays his part effectively in the second half of the story. Surprisingly, I was drawn more to the antagonists and didn’t warm up to Lavender that much.

However, it was challenging to root for Lavender because her selfishness and impulsive decisions make you wonder what’s happening to her. She seems to disregard how her choices could affect Clint and Logan and focus solely on herself. On the contrary, I felt a lot of empathy for Ron. He’s the one character who truly tugged at my heartstrings throughout the story.

The author knew these character dynamics and crafted a delightful ending. It deviates from the traditional climax you’d expect, and personally, I appreciated the unexpected turn of events. I must admit the author surprised me with some plot twists that altered the course of the story in ways I didn’t anticipate.

Ultimately, “Down a Bad Road” is a unique thriller. It doesn’t follow the same path as other books in the genre, making it a refreshing and enjoyable read.
