Are you an eco worrier or an eco-warrior?
When twelve-year-old Marty sneaks out of his house and makes friends with Jumi, he becomes an eco-warrior. Who is ready to help Marty stop a new airport from destroying ancient woodland. But being an eco-warrior isn’t as easy as he thinks.
Also featuring is a mum who happens to be the Prime Minister. Then, there is a very nosy sister, a gorilla-wrestling security guard, and the creepiest politician in the world. Eco Worrier sees a bored and lonely boy take on a sinister plot. And the boy projects his own fears in this hilarious book from debut novelist Ian Slatter.
Eco Worrier is the perfect read for children who love an adventure story. It has twists and turns and plenty of laughs along the way.
About the Author:
Ian published his debut novel in 2020. A middle-grade adventure story with plenty of twists and turns and lots of laughs.
He has also written two non-fiction books for adults. Premier League Legends – the top 10 greatest Premier League players of all time. The second being Incredible Moments in Sport.
Ian wrote for satirical website newsbiscuit.com for ten years. He also wrote for comedy sketch shows on ITV and BBC Radio.
He has lived in Newport, Birmingham, and Bristol. But now lives in Somerset with his wife, two children, and two cats.
Eco Worrier Review:
Lately, I feel that most of the middle-grade books I read have female protagonists. Or the ones with a male character are in a fantasy adventure series. Hence, “Eco Worrier” was refreshing because Marty is just your average kid. Well, whose mom is the prime minister, but he doesn’t let that get to him.
The author writes the story in a fun, upbeat manner and includes many elements to make it entertaining. The story has everything from blackmail, protests, espionage, secret passages to annoying sisters. Also, I loved how the author included political and environmental themes into the plot. I felt the theme would bring awareness to the younger readers. It is never too early in life to take environmental issues seriously.
Similarly, the author also writes the characters in a pleasant, realistic manner. Marty is lovely in the lead as he tries to stop the evil politician from building the airport. I enjoyed his friendship with Jumi. However, my favorite scenes were his moments with Leishman. The scene where they talk about the environment and Leishman reminisces about his earlier days was the highlight.
Also, the illustrations are quirky and adorable! Paul Winward did a fantastic job with the caricatures that give the book a nice touch. I would also like to point out that though the plot may seem humorous, there are scenes like the riots and blackmail, which unfortunately happen in reality. I admire the author for realistically depicting these events in the storyline. On a side note, I would love a backstory on the secret passage’s history and what other secrets lay in residence.
Overall, I enjoyed reading “Eco Worrier” and keen to see how the series continues.
