This joyful and heartfelt sequel to the NAACP Image Award-winning  Cookies & Milk is a story of fame, self-confidence, and second chances, based on author Shawn Amos’s memories of growing up the son of Wally “Famous” Amos.

After the overnight mega success of his dad’s cookie store, twelve-year-old Ellis Johnson is on top of the world. He’s met celebrities, strangers stop “the Cookie Kid” on the street, and he’s even headed to NYC to be in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with his dad. Ellis is ready for his star turn, playing harmonica on national television—until his big break turns into the most embarrassing moment of his life.

Ellis’s confidence bubble has officially burst, and he tries to keep a low profile at school. To make matters worse, Ellis’s dad is going gaga for a new girlfriend, and DJ Wishbone is pushed out of his radio station—and takes over Ellis’s place in the store. Can Ellis help those he loves, carve out a place for himself in Dad’s new life, and recover his confidence? This charming semi-autobiographic novel proves that anything is possible with good music, good friends, loving family, and great cookies.

Don’t miss Ellis’s first adventure in  Cookies and Milk!

Ellis Johnson Might Be Famous Review:

I haven’t delved into the series’ previous book, but that didn’t hinder my enjoyment of “Ellis Johnson Might Be Famous.”

Firstly, I sincerely appreciated how the author infused the narrative with a genuine love for soulful blues music, a passion that resonates with the protagonist, Ellis. A genuinely kind-hearted character, Ellis helps his father in their cookie business. The dynamics in their relationship take an intriguing turn when Sam, the pilot, enters their lives. The author skillfully captures the emotions that accompany the introduction of a new family member, a portrayal that I found relatable.

Another aspect that struck a chord with me was the story’s theme, which highlights that change, though challenging, is sometimes necessary. This theme permeates the characters’ personal and professional lives, showcasing how change can yield positive and negative outcomes but ultimately serve as a valuable learning experience. I also enjoyed the 70s theme in the storyline, offering glimpses of the disco era and the Bee Gees.

Additionally, the supporting cast of characters left a lasting impression. Alex, in particular, emerges as a standout friend to Ellis, offering unwavering support and candidly pointing out when Ellis might be incorrect in his decisions. Parallel side storylines, such as Wishbone’s professional struggles, add depth to the narrative. I also developed an affinity for Hershel, even though his presence was somewhat limited, and I’m now intrigued to delve into the first book to explore his backstory.

The illustrations by Tracy Nishimura Bishop enhance the storytelling. My favorites were the old New York skyline and Ellis’s mishap during the Thanksgiving parade. The author adeptly maintains a delightful and lighthearted tone while skillfully addressing more serious themes.

Overall, “Ellis Johnson Might Be Famous” is a captivating middle-grade tale that will undoubtedly captivate readers from the very start.
