From a bestselling author comes a vivid, classic feeling adventure tale about a boy and his sword and how giving away something precious leads to an even more important discovery.
Lucian’s father called them faraway things, those mysterious objects found on the windswept shore, their stories long lost in the shroud of ocean fog. Lucian’s discovery on the beach this particular day, though, is no ordinary faraway thing. It’s a cutlass, strong, shiny, and powerful. As its history comes to light, Lucian faces a choice: cling to the sword he loves or accept a gift that shines farther, wider, and deeper than he could have ever dreamed.
Stunningly illustrated with impressive art by Kelly Murphy and written by award-winning and bestselling writer Dave Eggers, here is a thrilling tale about the reward of letting go.

Faraway Things Review:
“Faraway Things” is a breathtakingly beautiful children’s picture book, and I was mesmerized by its colors.
The story is sweet and surreal. It is one of those stories that a reader of any age would enjoy. Moreover, I think this book would appeal to an older audience, while the imagery would attract young ones. I adored Lucian in the lead and his zest for adventure. Even though he doesn’t have much, he finds adventure with what he has and lives a tranquil life.
But, as mentioned, the central part of the story is the fantastic illustrations. Everything was on par, from the colors to the details. The illustrator beautifully contrasted the colors from eye-catching pastels of pinks and blues, making me feel like I was strolling with Lucian holding the Cutlass. I particularly loved the pages where Lucian sleeps at night in his room, remembering his father, or when he sees all the treasure that the captain has to offer. It is one of those books where you pause at each page mainly to appreciate all the finer details the artists put in to make the story stand out. The illustrator did a terrific job with the book, and it is easily one of the best illustrations I have seen in a children’s novel ever!
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed “Faraway Things,” which was a treat to my visual senses. I hope the creators continue to release many such books in the future.
