Review:

A BIG Thank You to Edelweiss+ and Diamond Book Distributors for providing me a copy of “The Ghost, The Owl” by Franco in exchange for my review.

“The Ghost, The Owl” mainly stands out because of the magnificent illustrations. The details that Sara Richard has put into the background scenery, wild animals and the main characters is breathtaking. If you look into the owl’s eyes on page 9, you can see details of the universe embedded in them. There’s a certain sense of symmetry and alignment of the objects and characters making them stand out in each frame. She uses a wonderful contrast of colors to set the tone and mood of the story. For instance, the pale, grey contrasting theme in the beginning shows the soothing friendship between the two. When the villain enters the story, the colors beautifully change to a fiery bright contrast showing his fury and madness. I became an instant fan of Ms. Richard from this story and hope to see more of her artwork.

However, that isn’t to say that Franco shouldn’t be given credit. A gripping story complimenting to beautiful illustrations is what makes a graphic novel memorable. The author has done a fabulous job in creating a charming story that would entertain anyone.  The story line is mysterious and enchanting that takes the reader on a beautiful journey of courage and love. Moreover, all the characters (except the villain) are heartwarming that makes the reader instantly attracted to them. My only complaint here is, why was the story so short? I wanted the book to continue and read more adventures between the ghost and the owl. Also, the story nicely depicts how you should support your friends during dire times, even if everyone else is against you. Furthermore, it also encourages people not to stereotype someone in a negative manner just because they are different.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed “The Ghost, The Owl” and I hope to see it as an ongoing series. Frankly, I can see a lot of potential between the two friends going on various adventures against the council. It is very hard to say anything negative about this delightful novel. I give it 4.5/5 stars only because I felt it was too short and would have loved to read more details.
