The Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess series is inspired by real-life budding Broadway Star, Kayla Pecchioni: a young Black woman who has always lived her life by believing in herself while letting nothing get in the way of her dreams.
About the Author:
As a therapist, attorney, CEO of Make A Way Media, and author of fifteen children’s books, Deedee Cummings has a passion for ensuring equality, inclusion, and social justice for the next generation. Since her first book published in 2014, Cummings has been on a mission to help young dreamers and doers “see themselves” in the pages of the books they read.
Cummings has spent more than two decades working within the family therapy and support field. And much of her writing shares her experiences of working with kids in therapeutic foster care.
By the end of 2021, this #OWNVOICES author will have fifteen diverse children’s books to her credit. Also, this includes the Rapid Release of her Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess five-book series. Moreover, all fifteen of Cummings’ diverse pictures, poetry, and workbooks for kids reflect her professional knowledge and love of life.
Cummings is also the founder and creator of the Louisville Book Festival, a literacy-based celebration in Louisville, KY, celebrated on October 22nd and 23rd, 2021.

Kayla A Modern-Day Princess Dishes Dancing and Dreams Review:
I enjoyed this book more than the first story because of its theme. The author includes some important topics like divorce and separation, which I have not come across much in a children’s novel. What I like about the author is how she manages to cover critical issues in children’s books while still making the story child-like and whimsical.
We meet the new character, Tommie, who moves in next door to Kayla. Kayla is adorable in how she immediately makes a new friend. I loved how Kayla and Tommie spark a friendship and support each other. She tells him that they are both unique, and there is nothing they cannot do if they set their mind to it. Kayla is also adorable and doesn’t let the title of Princess get to her, as she continues to do the house chores and help her mother. Moreover, the author also adds significant terms like “Therapeutic,” improving the child’s vocabulary.
The illustrations are also bright and vibrant. As the story takes place during the day outdoors, the pictures are breezy and colorful and lighten the reader’s mood and hold their interest. I also loved the small details the artist put in, like the various birds and animals we see in the background.
Overall, “Dishes, Dancing, and Dreams” is a charming addition to the “Kayla: A Modern Day Princess” series.
