__B C Harris lives on the west coast of Scotland with her husband and their two dogs. Surrounded by hills, forests and beautiful beaches, she has plenty of space for walking and thinking about characters. Her first book, Conspiracy of Cats, was published in 2021 and received wonderful reader reviews. Making Sacrifices is her second book and she hopes readers will enjoy it every bit as much.

To the world she is Vida.

To Isaac Saddler she epitomises only fear, the stuff of his nightmares, willed into existence through art and writing.

Transformed from victim to warrior, she became Vida, Queen of the Vidian Empire.

But Vida doesn’t just exist between the pages of a book.

High on Exmoor archaeologists think they’ve found ancient remains, but the body proves to be evidence of a modern murder. A facial reconstruction publicised by the police quickly goes viral.

Now Isaac must find out why the woman of his nightmares ended up in a bog pool close to his childhood home.

A lifetime of secrets that threaten to undermine his entire existence.

Making Sacrifices Review:

Isaac steals the show in this tale thanks to the captivating mystery element that kicks things off. The plot revolves around a murder, intertwining Isaac’s life with the mystery surrounding the deceased woman and his creation, Vida. The unique concept intrigued me, and I pondered the connection between Isaac’s fictional brainchild and the crime. Moreover, Isaac transforms from a party animal drowning in drugs to an artist and author striving to reclaim his dreams. His journey is a testament to personal growth, redemption, and healing from a troubled past.

Supporting characters like Cally and John contribute generously to the narrative, seamlessly integrated into Isaac’s world, both personally and professionally. Even DS Harmony and Inspector Bryden add zest to the crime aspect as they delve into the intriguing “Lady of the Lake.”

Also, the author skillfully explores themes such as art as a coping mechanism, the potency of shared secrets in relationships, and the looming threat of exposure during a police investigation. The creative touch, especially with the exhibition featuring CGI for “Two Tribes” and the detailed behind-the-scenes processes, adds a refreshing layer.

However, the story takes a turn in the second half. While the initial part exudes mystery crime thriller vibes, the latter half leans more towards a family drama. Although I enjoyed the scenes at Saddler Farm, the pacing notably slows down, focusing extensively on family dynamics and emotions once George enters the scene. This shift deviates from the story’s initial tone. Furthermore, Isaac and Daisy’s quick and sudden love in the first scene also took me some time to connect emotionally with them as a couple.

Nevertheless, the story unveils intriguing revelations, and the conclusion is satisfying. “Making Sacrifices” ultimately weaves a decent mystery crime thriller with an emotional family drama.
