When murder follows Mimi Lee to her romantic island getaway, she puts on her best sleuthing hat with her sassy cat in tow in this adventurous cozy mystery by Jennifer J. Chow.
Mimi Lee just found an extra perk to being a pet groomer at Hollywoof (other than cuddling animals all day long, that is). Pixie St. James, one of Mimi’s clients and the investor behind Hollywoof, has offered her and her boyfriend, Josh, a getaway at her vacation home, nestled on beautiful Catalina Island. With the island just outside of Los Angeles but still far enough from the hustle and bustle, Mimi, Josh, and their cat Marshmallow are excited for their relaxing stay.
That is, until Pixie’s last renter, Davis D. Argo, turns up dead. Mimi and Josh’s romantic getaway immediately turns into an enormous buzzkill, especially when Pixie asks Mimi for help. The police suspect Pixie, and Mimi knows a thing or two about wrongful allegations. Mimi figures it couldn’t hurt to snoop a little since she’s already there, and soon discovers that a valuable item is missing. Except Pixie isn’t the only one in the neighborhood . There is something strange happening on the island, and Mimi won’t stop until she finds out what it is.

Mimi Lee Cracks The Code Review:
I have not read any of the previous books in the “A Sassy Cat Mystery” series, but now I want to read them all from the beginning! And I love reading cozy mysteries from time to time, and I felt the author did a great job in the characters and the mystery plot.
I adored Mimi and Marshmallow in the lead. This book is not the first cozy mystery I read where we have a talking animal sidekick, but I loved how the author portrayed Mashmallow. Marshmallow has attitude and sass and makes the story humorous, like when he gets annoyed with Mimi’s cat puns or helps her find clues. Some memorable moments of the tale are when Mimi chats with Barbra and Lavinia.
The author also adds a touch of romance, and I enjoyed the chemistry and dynamics between Mimi and Josh. The two of them make a good team as Mimi investigates the case. It was interesting to see how the two had their shares of ups and downs in the story. Similarly, I also liked Pixie as the supporting character. The author throws quite a few red herrings that keep you guessing as to what is happening. Initially, I wouldn’t say I liked Pixie that much, but my opinion about her changed throughout the tale. The reveal, in the end, was also memorable and once, which I did not guess, which made the story entertaining.
Overall, “Mimi Lee Cracks the Code” is a lovely cozy mystery and a perfect fit for the genre. The story spiked my curiosity to pick up the first book, “Mimi Lee gets a clue,” to learn how it all started.
