Two kingdoms destined for war, one boy caught in the eye of the storm…

Francia AD853

After a failed Viking raid on the Frankish coast over 20-years-ago, Jarl Sven the Boar had to leave his only son, Torkel, as a hostage with a warning never to raid Francia again or his son will die.

In Hügelburg, a small town in East Francia, there is an ambush at the home of Torkel and his 9-year-old son Charles.

Before dying, Torkel thrusts a package into young Charles’s hands. And tells him to flee Francia for Denmark in search of his grandfather Sven the Boar’s protection.

But the man Charles eventually finds is not who he expects. And Charles must put his fate in the hands of a man betrayed by Odin.

Together they must uncover the significance of the package and why the Kings of Francia want Charles dead.

About the Author:

Donovan Cook is the author of the well-received Ormstunga Saga series and the Charlemagne’s Cross series, both of which combine fast-paced narrative with meticulously researched history of the Viking world . And they are inspired by his interest in Norse Mythology. His first novel, was Son of Anger, which follows the journey of Ulf Bear-Slayer as he seeks to avenge his family’s deaths. And he has since written two more books in the Ormstunga Saga series.

Donovan’s birth was in South Africa but grew up in England. There his fascination with Medieval History, especially the Vikings and Norse Mythology, took root. In his free time, Donovan loves to read, watch rugby, and go for walks with his wife and their French Bulldog, Joey.

In 2022, Donovan signed a four-book contract with Boldwood Books and the first novel of his new series, Odin’s Betrayal. Boldwood Books published the book in April 2023.  They will publish book two of the Charlemagne’s Cross series Loki’s Deceit, in September 2023. You can visit Donovan’s website at donovancook.net

Odin’s Betrayal Review:

The narrative delves into profound themes of family, faith, and the mysterious unknown as Charles confronts an uncertain destiny alongside his enigmatic guardian. He must navigate the unfamiliar terrain of Norse culture and beliefs, a journey I found intensely captivating.

Furthermore, the story vividly depicts the harsh and unforgiving nature of the characters’ world, where violence and survival reign supreme. It also sheds light on Charles’ transformation, evolving from an innocent boy with dreams of priesthood into someone who must confront the harsh realities of the Viking era.

One of the standout characters for me was Sven. The author masterfully unravels the complexities of Sven’s character, torn between his Viking heritage and newfound Christian convictions. This portrayal unveils the unrelenting nature of Viking society and the extreme measures taken to settle disputes. The author adds tension between the characters, leaving us with unresolved questions about Sven’s past and the motivations behind his actions. The story leaves Charles torn between his allegiance to his grandfather and the burgeoning doubts he harbors for the man he once admired.

Within this gripping narrative, the characters grapple with intricate moral dilemmas, the bonds of family, and the relentless pursuit of justice. The story underscores the lengths individuals are willing to go to safeguard their loved ones and the profound power of oaths sworn to the gods in the face of adversity. Even the characters Thora and Sigge contribute significantly to the tale, and I found myself on the edge of my seat during thrilling moments such as the bandit attack.

In summary, “Odin’s Betrayal” is an enthralling introduction to the series, leaving me eager to discover its continuation.
