Drawn from real life, here is a bracingly honest illustrated diary of a teenage girl that captures the explosive turmoil and joy of adolescence.

Meet Phoebe. She’s cool and insecure, talented and vulnerable, sexy and awkward, driven and confused, ecstatic and tragic.

Like you.

And here is her diary, packed full of invaluable friends and heartbreaking crushes, spectacular playlists and vintage outfits, drama nerds and art kids, old wounds and new love. Based on her own teenage diary, Phoebe Wahl has melded truth with fiction and art with text, casting a spell that brings readers deep into the experience of growing up.

About the Author:

Phoebe Wahl is an award-winning children’s book author, illustrator, and surface designer whose work focuses on themes of comfort, fantasy, and intimacy with nature and one another. Her other titles include The Blue House, Backyard Fairies, Paper Mice (written by Megan Wagner-Lloyd) and the forthcoming illustrated YA novel Phoebe’s Diary (Little, Brown 2023).

Phoebe’s Diary Review:

“Phoebe’s Diary” truly charmed my heart for numerous delightful reasons.

To begin, let’s explore the enchanting illustrations that grace its pages. The author skillfully captures Phoebe’s essence as she navigates the whirlwind of teenage experiences and emotions. The author adeptly addresses sensitive themes like body image and love, depicting Phoebe as a character who ponders her feelings and self-perception deeply. This portrayal unveils her yearning for rebellion and audacity, making her remarkably relatable to readers experiencing the trials of adolescence. Some of my favorite ones are how the author introduces each character or how Phoebe fashions herself differently for various occasions.

Furthermore, the narrative delves gracefully into various themes, including teenage romance, insecurities, friendships, self-discovery, and the profound transition from youth to adulthood. Phoebe embodies the universal desire to break free from monotony and embrace transformative moments, a sentiment that struck a chord with me personally. Her journey through infatuations—from David to Owen and Sam—offered an engaging exploration of her pursuit of an idealized love. Equally captivating was her friendship with Nora, a companionship that led to profound conversations on various topics. The dynamics with Roxie and Mari added another layer of intrigue to the story.

However, the narrative occasionally meanders into repetition, with moments that stall the progression. Additionally, some instances, like the interactions with characters such as Cedar Bob, feel tangential and fail to significantly impact the main plot.

However, putting that aside, the book’s endearing essence shines through, leaving a lasting impact. I eagerly await the author’s future creations, hoping for more ‘diary’ style narratives that infuse that personal touch.
