Recently widowed, Sylvie Andrus moves with her young son, Jason, to a small river town and discovers she must solve a two-century-old mystery to rid herself of the ghost who haunts her. Still grieving, she finds the ghost of her husband, Ned, waiting in her new home to seduce her. At first, she resists his overtures, but soon she surrenders. They begin to collaborate on a book about Clarinda Braxton, a Revolutionary Era painter who disappeared without a trace in 1794.

Sylvie becomes obsessed with the task she’s set herself. Distressed by his mother’s behavior, nine-year-old Jason isn’t deceived by the ghost’s appearance. He knows this creature is not his father. Jason warns Sylvie the ghost is evil but, swept up by her yearning for her husband and determined to reveal what happened to Clarinda; she delays telling the ghost to leave. Only when she knows the truth about Clarinda will she be able to move forward with her own life. A multi-voiced story set in several time periods, POSSESSION tells the story of people obsessed by the mystery of long-buried murders and how that possession changes them.

There are many things which I enjoyed about the story. Firstly, I loved the supernatural concept of Possession. The highlight of the plot for me was watching Ned re-appear in Sylvie’s life after she moves! The author wonderfully spins the storyline, especially once Jason starts interacting with Ned too!

Moreover, I enjoyed how the author kept the story fresh by alternating between the two timelines. It was interesting to see the Trelawneys and the Braxtons. Elizabeth shares a beautiful relationship with Clarinda in the past timeline, and James is a conniving character that you love to hate. Similarly, Annabelle and Sylvie also have a sweet friendship. Moreover, I loved Annabelle in the supporting role. She came across as a quirky historian and town gossip and was very entertaining. Also, as the story progresses, the author seamlessly connects the two timelines’ characters beautifully. Some of the characters, like Daniel, also had an aura of mystery around them.

However, probably the only thing that threw me off a bit was Ned and Sylvie’s relationship. The author narrates the way they meet, fall in love, and build a family in one chapter’s span in the beginning. I would have liked if the author spread their relationship just a little bit to adjust to them initially. Moreover, even Ned’s death and their move to the new house felt very fast as the story speeds up in the beginning. The pacing became perfect once Sylvie and Jason settle in their new home.

Overall, Possession was a charming supernatural tale with a touch of historical fiction and was a fun book to read! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
