The Copper Road is the second novel from award winning writer Richard Buxton. Book one of Shire’s Union, Whirligig, was shortlisted for the Rubery International Book Award.

About the Author:

Richard lives with his family in the South Downs, Sussex, England. He completed an MA in Creative Writing at Chichester University in 2014. He has an abiding relationship with America, having studied at Syracuse University, New York State, in the late eighties. His short stories have won the Exeter Story Prize, the Bedford International Writing Competition and the Nivalis Short Story Award.

The Copper Road Beyond the Promise Review:

This was a wonderful continuation to the series and it was thoroughly engrossing.

Firstly, the story continues from the previous book, and revolves around Shire, Clara and Tod. All the three characters have their own storylines which beautifully blend with each other. Equally, each one of them held my attention completely. Particularly, I loved Tod’s character. His story starts with a bang as he escapes and finds his way to Luther’s farm and then joining the Army. Shire also shines with his conflicting relations with Tod and Clara. Clara is also interesting and goes through a lot of emotions, recalling her past with Taylor and surviving through the war and protecting the estate. Even though the characters are on opposing sides, the way they connect and support one another makes this compelling. It was also nice to see some of my favorites back like Matlock, Opdycke and Trenholm.

Similar to the first book, the author did a fabulous job in writing the story. In some ways, I felt like his style of writing was even better than Whirligig. Also, the backdrop is fascinating with the 125th Ohio Infantry. Additionally, the author touches on key events like the Battle of Dandridge and the Atlanta campaign. Moreover, I was fascinated with the history of Ducktown and its copper, and how it was an important commodity during the War. It is clearly visible from the meticulous details of how much effort the author put into writing the story. The author makes the story complex and shows the war from both sides, the Union and the Confederate. I appreciate many aspects into writing this tale.

Overall, this was a wonderful continuation to the series and I cannot wait for the author’s next book!
