Sent to live with her strict, aloof, and uncaring uncle after her parents are killed in a car accident, twelve-year-old orphan Alyssa McCarthy longs for the life she used to have—one filled with fun and love. Then one stormy night, a message appears in the raindrops on the window that will change everything.

“Your life will never be the same again, as magic will interfere.”

Before long, Alyssa is kidnapped by Master Beau, a banished sorcerer with a mysterious connection to her who can only regain his power by weakening hers. Suddenly hurled into a world of wizardry filled with fantastical beasts and marvelous technology beyond her wildest imagination, Alyssa must defeat Master Beau if she ever wants to get home again. But Master Beau will stop at nothing, including using Alyssa’s friends, to ensure he is triumphant.

Originally titled “From Frights to Flaws,” this story is the exciting and enchanting first book in the “Magical Missions” series.

“The Frights of Fiji” is perfect for people who love an exciting middle-grade fantasy adventure.

Firstly, I loved the creativity that the author added to the tale. I enjoyed the various mixed breed creatures she included, like the “dermaiden” (half dolphin and half woman), “marshakeet” (half lorikeet and half kangaroo), and a “centidile” (half centipede and half crocodile). The last one mainly gave me shivers just picturing it. Similarly, the author also adds thrilling moments like when the team has to fight dingos and centidiles, and use their magic to save one another. There is something new and exciting in each chapter, with many things happening in Alyssa’s life.

Secondly, the authors are well-defined and progress nicely. Alyssa is a great protagonist, and it was nice to read her story in Fiji. I loved her friendship with Hailey, Madison, and all the others. At the same time, Master Beau was an entertaining villain. He is a bit cartoonish at times, but I feel he is the perfect villain that young readers will find memorable. However, I wish Duchamp was more prominent and hopes he makes an appearance in the continuing books of the series.

Also, I wanted to see more of Destiny, as I found her interesting too. Finally, the author ends the story by setting the plot for the next book, which makes you want to pick up “A Curse of Mayhem” and continue reading. My favorite characters were Simon and Isabelle. I enjoyed the humor that Simon brought to the tale and the magical elements that Isabelle conjured.

Overall, “The Frights of Fiji” is a beautiful start to “Alyssa McCarthy’s Magical Missions,” and I enjoyed it.
