Sometimes the past is best left buried
Since the birth of baby Joe five weeks ago, Ali Baker has been struggling to cope. Starved of sleep and haunted by painful memories from the past, she’s a million miles away from the polished, professional barrister she has worked so hard to become.
Then her mother tragically and unexpectedly dies, leaving Ali an orphan. Haunted by her loss, Ali can’t forget her mother’s last words to her: There is something I really need to tell you…
While heading back to the Norfolk Broads to sort her mother’s things, Ali plunges into memories of her family’s picture-perfect summers on the river.
But as she starts to uncover secrets that hide within the isolated house, Ali draws into a dark web that threatens to destroy everything she believed about her childhood – and her very sanity.
Ali may finally discover her mother’s secrets… but at what cost?
About the Author:
Caroline is a psychological thriller writer living in Manchester. She likes to write multi-layered, dark and edgy domestic suspense stories that delve into complicated relationships, secrets, lies, loves and the moral grey area. Besides, she admits to a slight obsession with the human psyche, what goes on behind closed doors and beneath people’s façades. She also enjoys performing a literary sleight of hand in her novels and hopefully surprising her readers.
The House On The Water’s Edge Review:
“The House on the Water’s Edge” is a book about a woman who uncovers secrets from the past that could change her life, and it was an enjoyable read.
I enjoyed the concept of the story and felt it had potential. Ali seems to face psychological issues over what happens to her mother and the birth of her child Joe. I liked the way the author portrayed her conflicted feelings, especially once she moves into the house. Ali is a complex character, who has many layers, and it was interesting to see how she reacts to all the secrets she uncovers.
The author also wrote Ali’s relationships well, and I felt it was another highlight of the tale. Ali faces a stressful relationship with Miles, even though he is the father of her child. Meanwhile, she meets George, who attracts her. The author adds a few twists and turns, which I did not see coming, especially about Ali’s family.
However, the only trouble I had with the story was the pacing. There would be portions where nothing much happened, and suddenly, something surprising occurs. I also thought that there was a lot of potential with Laura to spice up the story to make trouble in Ali’s life. While it was nice to see Ali interact with her siblings, I felt it strayed from the main plot, and the author could have trimmed a few scenes.
Nevertheless, “The House on the Water’s Edge” is an impressive thriller that slowly creeps on you. I recommend this book if you are in the mood for suspense, with family secrets and shocking revelations.
