For as long as he can remember, Curtis Pith has been obsessed with becoming a chef like Lucas Taylor, host of Super Chef. And Curtis has a secret: Taylor is actually his long-absent father.
So when Taylor announces a kids-only season of Super Chef, Curtis finally sees his chance to meet his dad. But after Curtis wins a spot in the competition and arrives in New York to film the show, nothing goes as smoothly as he expected.
It’s all riding on the last challenge. If Curtis cooks his heart out like he knows he can, he just might go home with the top prize—and the truth.
About the Author:
Chris Negron grew up outside Buffalo, New York, where he spent a huge chunk of his childhood collecting comic books and loving sports. But it was the hours of playing Dungeons and Dragons in friends’ basements that first gave him the dream of one day writing his own stories. That dream kept him company through college at Yale University and years of programming computers for big companies. DAN UNMASKED is his debut novel, and he now lives outside Atlanta with his wife, Mary. Visit him at www.chrisnegron.com
The Last Super Chef Review:
“The Last Super Chef” is a beautiful middle-grade novel that you will enjoy, particularly if you love reality shows and cooking.
Don’t you love reading books that feel like a breath of fresh air to the genre, yet a story you can immediately connect with from page one? I loved the backdrop of the cooking reality show on this heartwarming novel of friendship, teamwork, and building self-confidence.
Curtis is great in the lead as you see the various emotions he goes through. Initially, he feels sad and frustrated about not getting selected and starts to lose hope. Even when Curtis starts the competition, things do not go as per how Curtis had planned. I was rooting for him from the get-go to find out how he would do in the challenges. Moreover, Curtis has a great bond with his mother and Paige, and I wondered how his life would change when he met the Super Chef.
The author also writes the show’s story so excitingly that it makes you feel you are witnessing the events backstage with Curtis on the set. From the selection process to the cameras backstage, I loved how detailed the author made the story. The games are also exciting, and I couldn’t put the book down as Curtis wondered what the next challenge had in store for him. All the other contestants, like Kiko, Jory, and Pepper, were noteworthy supporting characters. Chef Wormwood is also someone who got on my nerves for how harsh she was with the contestants. Moreover, the author describes Curtis’s cooking talents so deliciously that they made my mouth water, like Creme Brulee Cupcakes, jambalaya, and burritos.
Overall, “The Last Super Chef” is a delicious middle-grade story that would surely entertain the reader.
