The War may be over, but secrets linger.

While World War II has been over for two years, its horrors linger within society, and chance encounters expose the still-festering wounds. Like most Americans, Beatrix Patterson and her husband Thomas Ling are trying to accept the past in order to focus on the future and a family.

Despite her desire for a quiet life, Beatrix must become a pursuer of truth once again when asked to expose suspected war criminals who may have killed thousands, a diabolical scheme to rob Indigenous Americans of their relics, and a person practicing voodoo as a means to murder a respected member of the Santa Barbara religious community.

Who can she trust to speak the truth when everyone involved seems to be hiding something that could ruin their lives?

Each book in the Beatrix Patterson Mysteries is written as a stand-alone. Readers do not need to read every book in the series to follow along.

About the Author:

Eva Shaw, Ph.D. is the ghostwriter and author of more than 100 books, including this in the third of the best-selling Beatrix Patterson mystery series.  She’s also a dog mom to Coco Rose, a sister, Aunt Eva, a godmother, a bonus grandmother called Fifi to precious Dane and Gwen, a friend, a devoted Christian and volunteer with her church and causes concerning women and girls, a rabid reader, an ardent gardener, a seriously silly and passionate painter (canvases and not houses), an enthusiastic traveler who has visited more than 35 foreign countries, and an amateur banjolele player.

She is also an online writing instructor with Education To Go and her five different courses are available through 4000 course providers worldwide.

When not hanging out with Coco Rose, family, and friends, painting or playing music from the early 1900 on that banjolele, you can find Eva enjoying her hometown of Carlsbad, California.

Look for the next Beatrix Patterson mystery in 2024.

The Pursuer Review:

This story is filled with intrigue and depth, and while I have read the earlier book “The Seer,” you should have no problem reading this as a standalone.

Firstly, I was captivated by the various mysteries that Beatrix delves into. On the one hand, Beatrix remains resolute in tackling numerous questions and responsibilities, including locating a missing hospital worker and unveiling the truth behind an Auschwitz tattoo on a rabbi’s forearm. On the other hand, a series of murders unfolds against the backdrop of a synagogue, entwined with the enigmatic circumstances surrounding the Chumash reservation. The narrative introduces an array of captivating characters, such as Sarah, Otto, Rabbi Krause, and Gerta, each enhancing the storyline.

Secondly, I was entranced by the way the author skillfully intertwined these mysteries with the personal struggles of Thomas and Beatrix. Their yearning for a child is a poignant and relatable aspect of the plot, and Thomas’s journey piqued my interest. The supporting characters, including Jo and Adelina, contributed significantly to the depth of this narrative.

Thirdly, I found the conversations Beatrix engaged in with other characters thought-provoking, addressing societal economic hardships and topics surrounding concentration camps and Indian reservations. The author expertly crafted Beatrix as a warm yet astute protagonist who fearlessly seeks answers to the mysteries she encounters.

If I were to offer a critique, it would be directed at how the author quickly resolved many plot threads in the final chapter. The ending felt somewhat rushed as the story reached its climax, and I wished for a more gradual resolution process.

Nevertheless, “The Pursuer” was an enjoyable read and a splendid addition to the Beatrix Patterson mystery series.
