For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

The Selection Review:

This book is like cotton candy. It is delicious, it is fluff, its sweet, and it is light. It’s a cute romance novel which makes you feel like you are reading the book version of the Bachelor. Even though I never saw the Bachelor, I enjoyed reading this story so much.

What’s interesting about this book is that there is nothing really new about it. The story is your typical love triangle that takes place in a slightly different landscape. But what really sets it apart is the author’s style of writing. Kiera Cass is one of those authors who can turn s*** into sugar and the Selection is just that. It’s a delicious novel that you cannot put down. Furthermore, she has a charm in portraying her characters and that glues you to the story.

Moreover, I love America as the main character. I thought the author wrote her very well and I loved her relation with Maxon. Additionally, I detest Aspen and think he is selfish and arrogant. Most of the book is about America’s feelings for Maxon or Aspen. The author has written the romance in such a feel good way that you really don’t care if there’s nothing else.

The only thing I didn’t like about the story is the world building. The world building was a bit awkward and bumpy. The story focuses on the characters from the get-go and you really don’t know what to make of the world. Also, the author mentions the history of the world in the second half of the book which seemed weird and out of place. Even after finishing it, I still don’t understand the ranking system or how it came into being. Perhaps the author explains it in the following books.

Apart from that, I really enjoyed this story. Overall, I relished reading “The Selection”, which I consider my guilty pleasure, and can’t wait to read book 2.
